Insights into the development of Gears and what lead Epic to move away

"The very first Gears of War game cost $12 million to develop, and it made about $100 million in revenue," he says. "It was very profitable."
But those profits continued to shrink as the cost to make each proceeding game went up and the revenue generally didn’t.
"By the end of the cycle, Gears of War 3 cost about four or five times more than the original to make," he says. "The profit was shrinking and shrinking. We calculated that, if we built Gears of War 4, the budget would have been well over $100 million, and if it was a huge success, we could break even. Anything less could put us out of business.
"That’s what caused us to move and change business models."
It wasn’t just Gears 4 that pushed that change; it was also issues that arose while working on Gears of War: Judgment.
"When we released Gears of War: Judgment, a bunch of community players were complaining about all the multiplayer levels we created. We realized that, you know, there are some problems with this, we should rework it, create a bunch of new content and release multiplayer around a new game just like we did in the project that was the genesis of Unreal Tournament," Sweeney says. "We had all these plans to do this, and so we went to Microsoft and we said, ‘Hey, we want to do this.’ And they said ‘No, you don't want to do that.’
"We weren't asking them for money, but you know as our publisher and proprietor of Xbox, it didn't fit into their business plans and so they said no. That made me realize very clearly the risk of having a publisher or anybody standing between game developers and gamers — and how toxic and destructive that process could be to the health of a game and its community."
If a Gears of War by Epic was going to be like Unreal Tournament 2015, meaning the community is going to be responsible for 99% of everything then...I wouldn't really want that.
Gears 4's budget must be fucking nonsensical.
I don't know, I mean DOOM is being developed by a stable team for starters

Did my Silent Assassin, Suit Only run in Hitman episode 2. My score is somewhere in the top 1000 on PS4. Have no idea how I can do it faster but I'll try again with a different strat later today. Some of those high scores are insanity.
definitely intrigued by some of the vistas in IW--need to know more about the gameplay, was kind of hoping it was legit aliens

I keep thinking to myself that at one point their reliance on the same 3 exclusives has to come back and bite them in the ass, then I remember Nintendo has stayed in business just off of Mario/Zelda.
By data Go To PostAgree with that. Hate the supernatural shitSpeaking of which, it would be awesome to have a high-budget game that was pure exploration and archeology. I could see maybe some fights here and there to spice things up, but it's silly that every game seems to function as a repackaged killfest.
Can I just buy the Modern Warfare Remaster? I don't have any interest in newer CoD games, but god damn, Modern Warfare.
just found out amazon uk won't be providing Overwatch beta codes. you can still get one from Game though.

Activision smart af to bundle MW Remastered with the Infinity Ward CoD. $80 too.
You could also look at it as paying $80 for MW Remastered w/ MP, and Infinite Warfare is the side piece lul

I played pretty much all of the original CoDs (on PC, get at me Smokey) including MW1 except for CoD3, but the franchise does nothing for me since Modern Warfare was introduced. There's just something about it's hyper-active and frenzied overload of everything going on in the game that's a turn off. I never feel like I get a chance to breathe and take the game in because by the time I wanna pause for a breath something else gets thrown at the screen to draw my attention. It just lacks a certain subtlety that I wish it had.
It also doesn't help that I think the in-game UI is a mess and follows the same overload of info conventions that the game itself adheres to.

They better not nerf the difficulty of Veteran, specifically Mile High Club. My 15-16 year old self spent hours playing that level.

I think i figured out why i keep playing CoD MP....
It's fast (for console fps) and reminds me a little bit of Arena shooters of the past. I play like 98% of the time in FFA.
I've played those arena shooters as well. Quake and it's several mods (Urban Terror, anyone?) along with Counter-Strike for hundreds of hours.
But there's something about CoD since Modern Warfare that's just too much where it overloads your senses to keep you interested while nothing particularly interesting is happening.

I dunno...when you hit a zone where you rattle off multiple kills in a row while calling in missiles, followed by a rolling wave of jets committing kamikaze, back doored by a robot that drops out of the sky to help you as you running on a wall....
...gets you hyped af i can't help it.
if you on the other end tho it sucks and gg

Oh, I've had those moments for sure, and it's rewarding, but it's all the in-between bits. It feels like consistently trying to chase that high and having to deal with all the other sensory overload bullshit just to get that hyped.
Other shooters are able to give me the same satisfaction without trying to apply equal weight to the most mundane actions or trying to let me know what's going on at all times or distracting me from what I want to do.

None of that ever got me hyped because 90% of the people that play CoD struggle to move and shoot simultaneously.
I actually much prefer BF (on PC). We're just 2+ years from the last proper entry. Im thirsty af for BF5
Already boxed up my Wii U and put it in storage. Shortest shelf life for a console for me ever. God damn, what a disappointing thing.
Man, my fast-paced shooter back in the day was the original Natural Selection. Shit was amazing on the teamwork and voice oriented servers I played on. A shame its sequel and the Savage games never gave me the same feeling.
Are there any modern fps-rts games with asymmetric sides? Or anything at all similar?
Unrelatedly, I'll probably pick up Overwatch as my TF2 substitute. It seems good and a buddy got me an early access key for this week. I love teamwork based games.

I feel like people that have Wii U's are going through what original Xbox owners dealt with. I only got three (admittedly pretty awesome) years out of that machine before Microsoft unceremoniously killed it and I basically had to get a 360.
By Smokey Go To PostReal close to buying it. Has the Diablo thing going for it, but I'm watching a dude go through his resources, abilities, etc and game looks like a beast.
Loot whore game with light rpg elements, character classes and twin stick goodness. I know it can be exhaustive, but picking up a legendary drop is so satisfying. Now if only there was a squad of 4 to rock out with.
By Smokey Go To PostPSYCH over there low key trolling in CoD thread lolthat shit was great lol
I really want to play Overwatch some more.
On the other end, I really want to wait until the full thing is out. I don't want to get some dope skin and then lose it.

Ni oh combat so good
They need to fix team balance in the next BF--I realize its a hard problem but I stopped playing because it was always so incredibly one sided.
I'm mostly interested in Titanfall 2 at this point and news on the next Destiny expansion (hopefully) at E3.

Played Overwatch for the first time last night, mostly as Hanzo and Mercy. Had some good 1v4 moments as Hanzo and had nearly 40% of my team's damage in one match (that we lost, obviously). I was not able to carry my team with Mercy, though. :(
It's fun and I'm looking forward to being done with work today so I can play some more.

By Dark PhaZe Go To PostDoes it feel much like TF2 gunplay wise? Not really a fan of that gameWeapons feel more powerful against non-tanks. Tanks feel very tanky. There are a lot more movement based abilities which make battles feel more dynamic. Ultimates also add a very different feel.
The open beta starts on the fifth, I think, so you will be able to decide for yourself then without needing to pay money to find out.
im sad neo bf isn't going into the future
dumb scrubs who never played 2142 shitting on the possibility just cause cod/titanfall are around
