The Verge reviewed Oculus Rift:
http://www.theverge.com/2016/3/28/11284590/oculus-rift-vr-review
Getting the Rift to fit right can prove elusive at first. While there’s a small focus knob at the bottom, a lot of the screen’s clarity depends on precisely how it’s angled toward your eyes, and it’s easy to give yourself a headache by strapping it as tightly as possible to keep the best fit. But once you get used to wearing it, the headset feels lighter and more comfortable than most of its competition, sealing against your face with a firm but pliable ring of foam. Since I have yet to break a sweat in the Rift, I can’t say how easy it is to clean, but the ring is removable and replaceable — although there’s no spare included. I also don’t have to deal with wearing glasses, but my Verge colleagues who do have had a positive response — they could either fit the headset over moderately-sized frames or, depending on their prescription, get the screen in focus without them.
Along with a cylindrical black tracking camera on a slender 8-inch stand, the Rift comes with two accessories: an Xbox One gamepad and a small, simple device called the Oculus Remote. Unlike Sony and HTC, Oculus isn’t launching the Rift with a full controller of its own, since its Oculus Touch hardware will arrive in the second half of this year. For now, the chunky and colorful Xbox gamepad seems slightly out of place alongside the sleek Rift design. The oval-shaped black remote, by contrast, fits right in, although its construction doesn’t feel as solid as the rest of the system.
The Rift is something I’d be happy to have in my living room, and compared to the developer-focused Oculus devices of years past, it’s a breeze to set up.
In some cases, VR still fills genuine gaps in a familiar experience. CCP’s EVE: Valkyrie could certainly have been developed as a standard space-fighting game, a genre whose controls usually confound me. But somehow, being able to see the cockpit all around me makes it easier to understand how my ship should move, and using the Rift’s head tracking to fire missiles feels much better than pointing a joystick. Racing or flying simulations aren’t things that could only be done in VR, but it’s arguably the best place for them.GOOD STUFF
- Great-looking industrial design
- A few really good seated VR games
- Promising future game catalog with Touch controllers
- Expensive, especially with gaming PC cost figured in
- Not much to do outside gaming
- Lack of motion controls at launch is a big weakness

I'm still of hte opinion that VR is fucked and any time a journalist says it's the 'future' I have to wonder if they ever go outside of their games journalist bubble where everyone has top of the line gaming pcs and is willing to pay half the price of said pc, if not more, for a headset that they can't try out in person because i think a lot of games and tech journalist don't realize most people aren't going to conventions where these things are at and most people aren't going to spend that kind of money on something they know isn't a sure thing. A wii was 300 dollars and you got EVERYTHING. You still need a good PC for VR to be worthwhile. Not to mention all the streaming video stuff seems like a cool idea but the average internet speed is going to struggle for any of it to look good.
Shit will end up like as something you mess around with at a theme park or something and that's about it.
Shit will end up like as something you mess around with at a theme park or something and that's about it.
They were pretty fair in pointing out how expensive it is. It's also a bummer that there aren't motion controls included which makes it even more expensive when they do arrive.
It's fine though. It'll be a few years until price hits mass market for it to be worthwhile, and Sony's VR will help ease that transition with a more market friendly price. Early tech will always be unfriendly expensive, but give it 2-3 years and there might be some adoption to it.
And unlike the weird wand and motion controls, if you couple VR with it, you won't really need to explain to people what it does or why it looks so weird. It's almost self explanatory.

I don't know, man. After watching some Occulus stuff, there's something about using a VR headset while using a gamepad that looks very disconnected to me. Like it looks like the things game devs would use at the early stages to make sure everything works but as an experience, there's something odd about seeing in a 3 dimensional space and not being able to reach out and interact with it. Rather being confied by the fact that it's still just a game.
It's why the Vive, to me, looks the most interesting. But I know I won't get it because the price combined with the amount of people supporting it seems like it would be a bad deal in the long run. But that's where that VR stuff needs to be to me. And people don't have the room for that kind of stuff which is why I think it'll be more of a .... I expect VR to be the resurgence of arcades. Even if it's not by the same name but the same idea.

WSJ on PS4K:
UPDATE:
Sony Corp. is planning to sell a more powerful version of its PlayStation 4 machine to handle higher-end game experiences, including virtual reality, people familiar with the matter said, while continuing production of its existing console that has so far sold more than 36 million units world-wide.http://www.wsj.com/articles/sony-plans-new-playstation-for-graphics-heavy-games-1459152941
Existing PlayStation 4 owners would need to buy the new model to take full advantage of the enhanced graphics and power, though it is likely that the current model and the coming one would share the same software catalog, one of the people said.
The new console would be announced before the planned October release of the PlayStation VR, Sony’s new virtual-reality headset…
UPDATE:
By Moris Go To PostStory at GiantBomb.comToday, multiple sources have confirmed for us details of the project, which is internally referred to as the NEO. No price was provided, but previous reports indicate that the NEO would sell at $399.
The NEO will feature a higher clock speed than the original PS4, an improved GPU, and higher bandwidth on the memory. The documents we've received note that the HDD in the NEO is the same as that in the original PlayStation 4, but it's not clear if that means in terms of capacity or connection speed. Starting in October, every PS4 game is required to ship with both a “Base Mode” which will run on the currently available PS4 and a “NEO Mode” for use on the new console.
The NEO will not supplant the current PS4, but will exist alongside of it and use the same user environment.
Sony seems committed to keeping the NEO and the original PS4 player bases connected. As such, there will be no NEO-only games, and Sony will not let developers separate NEO users from original PS4 players while playing on PSN. Likewise, Sony explicitly and repeatedly states that developers cannot offer exclusive gameplay options or special unlockables for NEO players—so don’t expect NEO owners to get a level editor or a special Rocket League car that you won’t have access to on your original PS4.
That said, so long as both systems have the same feature, the NEO can run an improved version. A local co-op game that features four players on the base PS4 could offer an eight player co-op mode on the NEO, for instance. But again, don't expect those differences to transfer to online modes.
PS4 Base and NEO versions of a game will also need to have parity with regard to peripheral support. So don’t expect NEO Games to have exclusive VR modes. Sony makes no mention of PlayStation VR in the docs we've seen, so it's hard to know what that means for the persistent rumors that this upgraded PS4 will be able to support PSVR without the "breakout box" that the headset ships with. That said, so long as the NEO's upgrades apply to PSVR games, developers should be able to get even more performance out of Sony's VR headset.
Games released previous to the NEO can take advantage of this hardware upgrade, but only if developers decide to patch their titles.
If it was really just to make PSVR games better, I'd have no problem with it, though I'd question the suitability of the hardware of the PSVR itself
I don't want what I think it is though.

By data Go To Postor they could just build a pcExactly. For me, the strength of the console is having a simple box that is good for gaming for 5+ years. If they're going to start releasing significant upgrades every 2-3 years, I'll just transition to upgrading my PC at the same rate. Especially as the PS4's exclusives have been a joke so far. Bloodborne and Until Dawn in 2 and a half years is frankly pathetic. I really like both games, but its nowhere near enough.
and not have to buy a whole new console to upgrade
They have to keep PS4K games backwards and forewards compatible. HAVE TO for this to work. That's the only reason why I can see this working out some.
It's not a new concept... You can buy an iPhone 6 alongside an iPhone 6S and now an iPhone SE that has the body of an iPhone 5 but the specs of an iPhone 6S. The pricing and such is different, but there are clear delineations. It's only a new concept to the videogame world, but it's been around for centuries in automotive and other electronics hardware.
For this to work, they need to: drop the PS4 price and re-brand it and make all games compatible with both platforms. I think this will work for them if they nail those two fundamental concepts.

what a mess, most folks (including me) see consoles as appliances, they drop 400 and are good to go for half a dozen years
they say you can still play new stuff on the OG PS4 but i give it a couple of months till the first outsourced gimped ports start popping up

Massive apparently looking into doing gear-checks for Dark Zone segregation
Might be necessary to keep the game alive tbh, there can be a huge difference between 2 level 30 players. The kind of difference that makes one of them essentially invincible in a fight, and the other go down in a second or two.

They're not phasing out the OG PS4 though. The only way for this to work is for PS4K games to be compatible with OGPS4 games. The OGPS4 will then see a price cut to be a lower barrier of entry. If they don't do that, then they completely fucked up, but I don't think that'll be the case.

PS4 games already look great and I don't find VR appealing so I'll be sticking with my current system.

They're gonna drop the OG PS4 price to $249 I bet and introduce the 4K at $399 or $449 with fully compatible software on both platforms. You're thinking there won't be pricedrops, which I highly doubt.
Automotive manufacturers and phone manufacturers do this all the time. You can buy a BMW 440i or you can buy an M4. You can buy an iPhone 6 or an iPhone 6S or an iPhone SE. That's the model they're going for. Anything else and that'd be disastrous.

If you bought a launch PS4 and this new model, you're looking at about ~$800 on PS hardware. That same amount would get you a superior PC. PSVR (which is supposed to be the main driver of a stronger PS4) and youre at ~1200

think the only reason i buy nintendo consoles is that everyone else likes all their games and it just never clicks for me and i want it to click. except mario 64. that instantly clicked.

- Not trading in the old PS4
- The user knows how to build their own PC
- And you're not factoring in the cost of how expensive VR on PC is ($599 minimum) which now pushes that PC above $2k, which, again, 2-3x equivalent cost

Of course they're not.
They're also not going to mark it down. Because it sells at the price it's at. Your new PS4 is going to be a 'deluxe model' and have a VR bundle version with it but by itself, it'll cost more than the current PS4.

Everything is an assumption because the PS4K is not out...but im willing to say that yes, this will be the case.

Huge installs, patches, pay for online (not on PC). Off the shelf low tier PC parts. And now the one thing hardware wise that really separated the two is being taken away.
Its not unrealistic at all with this iterative approach to consoles to start looking at PC,
