I do enjoy people saying 'people always said nintendo will die. so nintendo will never die'
like people didn't predict sega's death from the console market before it happened. or like because nintendo has money saved up like their investors are going to be hyped about the idea of them wasting all that to fund their fucked up, archaic systems.

yeah no buttons means no buy
hopefully nintendo goes third party for the ps5, at this point their own consoles are holding them back

By data Go To PostI do enjoy people saying 'people always said nintendo will die. so nintendo will never die'The best part is that people pretend like Nintendo wasnt near death after the GC. Good timing saved their ass when everyone paid $300 or whatever it launched at just to play Wii Sports. That casual market is long gone and now playing Candy Crush and Clash of Clans and whatever else is the new mobile hit of the month. They also don't have the benefit of handheld sales since mobile is eating into that as well.

Nintendo still has $120bil in assets. And they made $320mil in profits last year. Which is quite impressive given that they only have 5000 employees. But yeah, we'll see if they can keep this going.

IBM isn't out of business though.
Nintendo still makes some of the best games in the world, and any company that makes game hardware is going to want those games on their system, whether it be PC, PlayStation, or Xbox.
Sega exited the hardware business, and yes their business will never be the same, but they're still around and they still make good games.

Seems like this is essentially going to be Wii U 2 and their next handheld combined for a value price. If its not successful then its going to be really hard for them to find a place in the hardware space moving forward.
Its not just about how much you've earned--because the money is inevitably going to get burnt on R&D and failed efforts if you don't find solutions quickly.

i'm probably burned down cause the 2 last game i finished were Dark Souls 2 and Bloodborne but i'm not feeling the urge to play DS3 at all
Imagine Beef fielding calls on Christmas from non-tech savvy parents asking where the buttons are. Imagine.
The two screens idea has lead to absolutely nothing and yet Nintendo is still harping on it. I swear there's some cult inside Nintendo that believes in some two screen God.
VR is something that's up their alley and they're aren't anywhere near it. They should be looking at how to translate controller interface into VR.

thing is nintendo has inmense cash reverses but theyre a public company and no investor is going to want to continue with the console business with 2 major fuck ups in a row, especially with the ps4 doing these numbers

To be fair I don't think Wii-U ever lived up to the potential of the concept. If you can actually use four of these things on one system and Nintendo makes games that take advantage of that, I think it's an idea worth pursuing because

Nintendo can't do this. Nintendo can't keep up with Sony and Microsoft in tech. They need a gimmick to sell their platforms as toys rather than competing in a losing battle as another video game platform focused on cutting edge visuals and online play. because Nintendo can't match Sony and Microsoft on either level and they know this. They don't have the money or the expertise.
That said this prototype is a nightmare. Lack of buttons is a huge negative for me. Hopefully they redesign, but if not it's all going to come down to how they present and sell this concept to people.
i dont get this controller at all... it just doesn't make any sense why they're going with the wii u setup again (but like retro is saying in his post:): it would be nice if you could actually get 4 of these (though they look fucking expensive) so you can play 4 player local which you couldn't do with 4 gamepads.
i just dont see haptic feedback being enough to feel like a button at this point, but maybe nintendo figured it out...
the controller itself looks sexy as hell though lol

Two screens idea is ultimately futile. It's simple human-body physics. Essentially, there is no great or meaningful difference between pulling up a window on one screen compared to having that window open on a screen in your lap. Either way, you must look away from the main screen action. The end result is the same. The issue that exists cannot be resolved. It's like the difference between a pocket watch and a wrist watch.
The only interesting or useful stuff that came out of the DS was some touch screen control games. Two screens have lead nowhere because there is nowhere for the idea to go.
VR may be tech intensive, but I don't believe Nintendo is incapable of competing in tech. They just don't want to get into that race. However, VR will eventually require new controller concepts to utilize the new concepts of spatial relations and that's Nintendo's wheelhouse.
By Smokey Go To PostWe are witnessing Nintendo head towards deathlmao, you want them to make a high tech machine, they'll be dead by the end of this year if they did that.
Never seen a more stubborn company

I think you're thinking exclusively in terms of single player games.
I think these kind of controllers could potentially have a lot of value for same room multiplayer and I think there could be a market for a device like that aimed at kids and families.
and that's really Nintendo's best shot at staying in the console market. Trying to sell consoles as toys vs multimedia devices.

Nintendo leadership has publicly conceded in the past that they can't compete in tech. It's just common sense. Unlike Sony and Microsoft which are huge multimedia corporations, Nintendo is exclusively a game company. So not only do they not have the capital to compete with Sony or Microsoft in their game, they don't have the expertise that those companies do from dealing in those other sectors.
Going after VR would be chasing a fad miles behind the competition. (who are already far larger than you) That didn't work for Microsoft with the Kinect and Sony with PLAYSTATION MOVE, it won't work for Nintendo.
By Dipro Go To Postlmao, you want them to make a high tech machine, they'll be dead by the end of this year if they did that.
Exactly. If there's any lesson to learn from the Wii-U it's don't do that. With both Sony and Microsoft cooking half gen upgrades they'd just be left behind again as soon as they caught up
I just don't see the market of 2 or 3 friends playing games together in the same room anymore. Those days are over with live online play.

Stardew Valley has more replay value than a AAA cross platform TPS called The Division. It's the first game that runs at full speed on my retina macbook pro without issues. It's everything the Giant Bomb guys said it was and then some. Let's share our stories of struggle.

I'd lowkey buy a VR Metroid Prime game at a high price. Same for Zelda and Mario Galaxy.
Saddest mindset when it comes to this industry, even if it is partially true. Families exist, but Nintendo seems to be the only ones to give a fuck about that, and even then they realize little Timmy is off in his room with his mobile phone.
I'd take screen peeking over having to set up two tv's and and two consoles, just to play with someone in the same fucking room. lol.

Oh split-screen playing is most definitely a feature I support, but this isn't it. Their reasoning for these types of devices is that they believe there is a market for friends and/or family playing together in the same room, so they need a device to take advantage of that. I just don't think that's how people play videogames anymore. It's far more isolated and the connectedness happens over the internet. When kids play Halo or CoD or Madden "together", they do it online in their own personal spaces.

I disagree on the size of the market for this strategy to be viable. I think the number of families that play videogames together globally and especially in the US is tiny part of the market. The kid playing videogames with his friends over the internet in his room? Yea, that's where we are at.

I think you're just having trouble seeing outside of your perspective. Yeah I agree that people in their 20s to 30s aren't having get togethers to play for smash bros with each other. (casually anyways...lol)
but I mean I'm not netplaying with my brothers, or my girlfriend, or probably my kids if I had them. and I think if I was a kid, even today, I'd still have an interest in playing games with my friends in person.
and I don't think I'm alone there.
By reilo Go To PostI don't trust Nintendo to make a device that successfully does both. We'll see.
Honestly I don't think it'll do both well
but it doesn't need to. I don't think those types of games that are designed for local same room play need netplay.
Nintendo's got a pretty solid niche...
I just hate how they have Xeno and aren't letting it go to a real console.

They got lucky af with the Wii and ironically that could lead to their death. They don't seem to understand 3rd parties don't want to have to specifically develop for your machine because of your latest gimmicky controller.
