AssCreed on PS3 was such a buggy mess and the gameplay was entertaining for twenty minutes before you realized how repetitive and stale everything was.

For all the bullshit Destiny went through, a lot, it always had gameplay. Hell, Vault of Glass is still likely to go down as some of the best FPS coop in a looooong while.

Consumers like yearly updates of reliable tittles. It means, hey this is good and it's coming. As a buyer, that's reaffirming. It's just that the creative juices wane after the umpteenth attempt at keeping it fresh while keeping it familiar.
It's not that devs don't want to branch out or that fans aren't willing to try new things. It's the wide gap of unknown between the two. To the average buyer who isn't hanging out on gaming forums, it's hard to parse the difference between Witcher 3 and Shadows or Mordor, let alone something like Shadows of Mordor from Knockoff 352521.
This is why Nintendo figured out that they can introduce new concepts under old mascots. New idea plus old reliability.
