By livefromkyoto Go To PostThe gunplay did indeed suck. Infinite made up for it with the incredible setting & storytelling. Those painterly backdrops, barbershop quartet versions of God Only Knows, the mind-bending plot, the game as commentary on the co-option of religion in the conception of America and the messianic movements of the 19th century as a reaction against modernity…I have a hard time coming up with games that did a better job in the story & setting departments.I beat Xenogears in like... 9th grade or something. Then Xenosaga immediately after. When it comes to mind-bending plots, you're gonna have to buy me dinner at least twice before I put out.

last one i fell for was bioshock
"but the original was a classic!"
"but infinite is amazing"
its trash. all of it. and i've been jaded ever since *shakes fist at cloud*
It does have a multiplayer component, too, btw. I haven't played it enough to say much about it other than the population is kinda low.
Infinite lost me the minute it decided to not actually do much at all with the racism, and then double down on the, "both sides are bad" angle. meh.
Bioshock 2 and the Minerva's Den DLC remains the best.
lmfao
I thought it was great back then. "That Man" was the most mysterious shit ever. smh

Okay, you went right to one of the only things I'd agree on. People complain about the second disc like the gameplay wasn't junk and the plot the best thing about that game by far. They somehow turned out this opus magnum built around gnosticism filtered through Jungian psychology but about anime mechs because of course.
I have been hopeful for every Xeno game since, but they never pulled it off again.
By reilo Go To PostMicrosoft spends more time redesigning the Xbox Dashboard than they do developing games, wtf.How much did they waste researching that new controller?
That nobody is going to buy at that premium price?
Could have given us some more D4 seasons instead.

Disagree. That controller is the best thing they've done since paying for Panzer Dragoon Orta.

Xenosaga came close, but that was just more about good old narrative driven gut punches than calling God on his shit.
XCX was nothing if not beautiful though. Still - easily - the best open world I've ever played in.
I will stan Xenogears forever. I loved that game growing up. Xenosaga and whatever were disappointments.
I gave up a third of the way into XS2. I can take bullshit Japanese anime melodrama but my god that had way too much. It didn't help that the gameplay was significantly worse over XS1 and XS1 was worse than XG.
By livefromkyoto Go To PostDisagree. That controller is the best thing they've done since paying for Panzer Dragoon Orta. It's not something worth spending 100 plus millions of dollars in when the 360 already had a decent controller.
A non-stupid d-pad is not worth 100 plus million dollars.
Funding games that people want to play and are only available on Xbox is an actual better way to get them into your console than a new d-pad.
I remember Xenosaga and the Wind Waker preorder disc with all the Zeldas came out at the same time. My kid brother and I saved up for both.
This WOAT character design shit got put on the shelf quick.

No way is that true. The games got progressively better in terms of gameplay. Xenogears game/combat design is absolutely abysmal.
I say that as someone who played Xenogears, Xenosaga Ep 1 and half of Ep 2 all last year. I've sort of hit a wall in Ep 2 for various reasons but the gameplay is the best out of all of them so far.
By DY_nasty Go To Postjesus… i played guilty gear for the story initially nm, i'm lost
I still love the GG universe and lore.
I think Xrd is less interesting though because it's actually presented as a game story and is limited by that. XX was and still is the best thing ever for me. Minimum story within the games but the world was fleshed out EXTREMELY well by the supplementary like the novels and drama CDs. I wish more games relied on other mediums like that as vehicles for world building

Comboing enemies with breaks is way more interesting than anything in the previous games, which are just spam your strongest deathblows over and over and over. (With unskippable, extended animations)
I don't think it's a good system, but when it comes to the Xeno games good combat(or gameplay in general) isn't really on the table, or why you're here. It's just better than what we've had. Indisputably lol.
That said I have heard 3 is genuinely good from a lot of people, but playing Ep 1 and 2 back to back was a mistake lol.
By Retro Go To PostNo way is that true. The games got progressively better in terms of gameplay. Xenogears game/combat design is absolutely abysmal.Naw, no way. The gears system sucked and lacked upgrades, world traversal was inferior and story was perpetually in uber-cutscene mode.

Yeah I never used AGWS. Not because they were bad but because you just had way more options on foot. But this was true in Xenogears as well. That game just featured a bunch of mandatory Gear combat sequences unlike Ep 1. (and gears did a ridiculous amount of damage to on foot combatants, limiting your options even when it was a choice)
and after the platforming and dungeon design in Xenogears, Xenosaga just being a series of hallways connecting cutscenes was a huge improvement in my eyes lol. I am 100% good on another Tower of Babel, or Rico's Omnigear dungeon.
See, I wholeheartedly disagree. I found XG's differentiation between character battles vs gear battles refreshing, and having a real world and dungeons to explore was a great change of pace. I also can't for the life of me remember if you could upgrade gears in XS1, which I believe you could not.
^You could, but equipment was few and far between.
Pro strat is actually to not waste the money ever. There's maybe.... 1 or 2 fights you're actually forced to use them in, and they're fairly early. Get some decent abilities, and decent abilities transferred and you'll never even miss them. Eps 2 and 3 are waaaaay different.
But seriously, I don't think I finished Ep 2. I got to the obvious confrontation, things happened, and I remember looking up the release date for Ep 3 then never looking back. That combat was just not for me. The music was amazing though. I'll give it that. Also, Ep 3's codex is one of the few good ones in gaming. Covered everything extremely well and in a painfree way at that. The sooner you throw Ep 2 in the bushes the better.

You could upgrade them, but resources are so limited in Xenosaga Ep 1 that it's just not worth it. That's my biggest complaint with the game really. It doesn't give you nearly enough resources in terms of Exp, Skill points and money to really explore its systems.
That said I can understand and respect your perspective. I wish I could agree but I personally just can't get passed how poorly those elements were designed. I found Gear combat really restrictive and rigid and was happy to cheese it whenever possible lol. (Billy Ether Doubler OP)

Fair enough. I mean I can't talk since I dropped it myself.
I learned the combat system following a guide and once I figured it out I was having fun. I think I just burnt myself out on the series playing too much at once.
XG Rule #2 - We don't talk about the Tower of Babel.
When you get a random encounter right as you're about to jump on the swinging rope.
The most convincing argument presented in Xenogears against the existence of God.
I don't think XG's combat aged as well as nostalgia would imply. I could still enjoy it today (if I could get past the painfully boring early game) but that's only because I'd be pre-cheesing deathblows and trying stuff I never attempted before.
I think playing it younger vs in modern times definitely influences my opinion quite a bit. I enjoyed the shit out of XG when I first played it, and felt disappointed with XS when it came out. I'd love a XG remake with better gameplay.
Looking into selling my US wii u and pretty much all the games that matter if anyone is interested
By data Go To PostWatch Dogs 2 is greatIt really is, first PS4 game that I've actually beaten.

It's a cool idea that just doesn't end up being fun, interesting or intuitive. I think I had like 2 deathblows going into the Kislev arc until I looked up how to train them in the fastest way possible.
All dis talk bout xeno makes me wanna pick up gears again or X. Still on Disc 1 in the sewers in gears

With Trump winning the election, you're presumably killing racists in any US-based murder simulator
My desire to play Mafia 3 just fell through the floor when I heard about its structure. I can handle one Assassins Creed game every two years I think.
Not sure whether to get the secret item from the RE7 demo. Looks like a bastard of a checklist to adhere to just for something that might mean fuck all in the final game.

Also, Lara is stupid strong.
