Welp, I started my first mission with all DY's mods.
Started off pretty good, got the Flawless thing.
Next mission though, it loaded a custom map. Started off with 8! guard towers.
I am so screwed.

been trying to tell you for years... got you side eying 1080p now lol
I'm surprised by how well its all running. I turn off AA and ambient occlusion (the trojan horse of graphix options) and everything is great.
I did get a shock seeing tearing again for the first time in years--had to throw on the new vsync options which are great.
I can go back to 1080 fairly easily though. Not necessarily sure why. 720p for example I was never able to go back to. But I can switch between 4k/1080.

So, there's a lot going for this game. For example, It has the best dungeons in any single player FF period. I'm shocked by how good the dungeons are in this game, full of unique environmental hazards, jump scares and beautiful sceneries. Some of them are genuinely creepy and unsettling. Love how the part comments on very specific things in every dungeons, they have tons of voiced lines, which shouldn't be surprising for a AAA RPG in 2016, but it feels really revolutionary here since it's FF. :p
The bros are very likeable. They're not very interesting individuals in themselves but as a team they work great. Have a very strong chemistry that's not only represented in their lines, but in basically everything in the game, from random little animations, to battle system, to camping scenes, to even the equipment menu. Huge kudos to the animation team.
The game also has one of the best bestiaries in any video game ever. Every monster is very well-done in every aspect. People already know of how great the monsters are from the demos, but I like to add that there's tons of them. TONS. Many of which weren't in any promotional material as far as I know. They make the hunts very addictive regardless of how basic they are.
It also has a fun, fluid, interesting, weird RPG/Real time hybrid battle system that many people will hate because they expected DMC.
So yeah, the game has a lot going for it, and for what it's worth, this's the most I enjoyed final fantasy since IX.
But as Inuhanyou mentioned earlier, the game is frankensteinish. It's not well put together. It needed more time in the oven, or better, it needed to throw all the versus package and start on a clean slate. The plot, at least in the first 8 chapters, is a hot mess.
And it's a fucking shame because I find the characters very likeable, and the world intriguing, but the game completely falls apart tonally. I'm sorry but the happy road-trip side doesn't work at all with the "my father god murdered and I will avenge" side at all. It's pretty jarring when Iris flirts and throw jokes with me when she's supposed to be completely traumatized by the destruction of her city and the murder of her father. It just don't work.
Also, there's very, very, very, very little story in the chapters I played. The last two chapters I played, while were the peaks of my playtime, game-play wise, were also basically a filler arc. The game is not subtle at all in its efforts to keep me away from the next story beat, so I hope it's something substantial. Till now, there's no story in the game beyond the basic premise that we've known for more than 8 years now.
Most of the cutscenes feels like a PSP game cutscenes. They're clearly rushed, and not well-directed.
Some of the recently rewritten lines don't have it's appropriate subtitles in the game yet. For example, the new Prompto line that replaced "WE'LL PLAY HIDE AND SEEK WITH HIM".
Side-quests are mostly Xenoblad-y, but that was to be expected. There's some legitimately great side-content though, in form of dungeons, hunts, and optional bosses.
So, yeah, that's my take on the game for now. It's a very good game, great even. I'm having a blast. Dethroned Dark Souls III as my game of the year. It has best dungeons in the series, great combat, fantastic monster gallery, beautiful world to explore, likeable characters, and phenomenal music. I just hope the story ramps up in the next act, because at the moment, it's a rushed, filler-y, badly presented mess.

friend just told me Titanfall 2 only sold 180k? is this legit
thats like ridiculously low. the last guardian will probably double that
thats like ridiculously low. the last guardian will probably double that
The biggest worry going into this game was that the gameplay, dungeons, and world were gonna feel rushed/assy, and that they would have a competent story that's somewhat interesting. Now we're hearing it's the complete opposite so color me pleasantly surprised.
FF's haven't had a well executed plot in a long time, but as long as they nail everything else and keep enough decent plot beats going to keep me interested in playing, then I'll consider it a success.

I just can't process the term 'filler arc' in a jrpg like its a real complaint
may as well complain about shooting too many no named grunts in a fps

No idea how the game is even structured
@FF, can I interest you in a little game called Dota 2?
latency would probably be atrocious, maybe good enough for unranked matches though

I don't even understand the criticism within the context of the preview. Like, they're claiming it's filler arc without actually having finished the next storybeat. It either must be something very obvious where it doesn't actually matter to the story one bit, or they just haven't played enough of the story to make that conclusion (which we know to be true).
I'm gonna guess it's more of a "let us teach you how to play the game in a stress-free environment in a quest that's not overly interesting in order to help you learn some of the gameplay beats better" type of thing.

By Tea Go To PostJRPGs are basically filler incarnate so…Add the open world structure to it, and you've got a recipe for a tonne of stuff that you do for the sake of it, or to gain xp/money without advancing the story
It goes by degrees though obviously. Sidemissions in GTA give you very little reward aside from interesting little mini-narratives that are simply enjoyable to see through to their conclusion. The trouble is if these arcs are dull and repetitive throughout, and required to get to the main story beats, as I believe they are in mafia 3
Even TW3 which is perhaps the high watermark for open world rpg story design is full of stretches of gameplay that I'd describe as filler. The Dandelion stuff alone took me hours and had very little payoff for the time investment iirc, in terms of advancing the story.

Its like Witcher 3 sidequests compared to Dragon's Dogma sidequests imo. One puts you in pain, the other does a decent job world building - even when its not directly pushing the main story.

By reilo Go To PostFFXV on PC? lol you'll be waiting 5+ years on that one. You're forgetting that in 2009, Japanese developers didn't even know what a PC was let alone that it was a viable place to sell games.
It took 5 years for FFXIII to make it to PC.
By reilo Go To PostWHAT THE FUCKAccounts are free (and only require an email address) and strangers are able to do things like send friend requests and trade requests. I guess this is Valve's way of cutting down on the spammers by requiring your account to have a certain value of purchases.

Yeah it's pretty much what Kibner said.
It was to cut down on scam friend requests. As with all shitty rules of Steam you can thank CSGO (and probably Dota) for it. When I had my M4A4 Howl (at the time a $400 skin which has nearly doubled) I used to get 10 friend requests a day from level 0 accounts who had a sweet offer for my skin.

If that review is accurate (lol), then FF XV looks like a game I will be interested in. Fun gameplay, great music, interesting world, likeable characters? I'm in! If a video game ever has a worthwhile story... well, I won't say it'll be a first, but there certainly aren't many with one that is good enough to be the reason to buy it.
e: I just hope for one that doesn't actively make me want to stop playing

By reilo Go To PostWas a joke to an old IGN review:...lol
The GTA IV story is the most overrated damn thing. I even remember Jeff Gerstmann gushing about it.
Like, Niko is a psycho who is lying to himself out loud the entire game. All he keeps telling everybody is that he wants to get out of the game and then he goes and does even more deplorable things than before. Never felt anything for that guy, not even for a second.
John Marston, though, there's a protagonist.

Beat the hell out of God of War Chains of Olympus in two sittings and unlocked the platinum trophy. Good game. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I played it on the PSPGo years ago but in full HD at 60 fps it's a much better experience. I wish more modern games looked and played this well in HD.
Started GoW Ghosts of Sparta and it's not nearly as good. It's supposed to take place between the end of the original game and GoW 2, but it doesn't make any sense because Kratos has killed Ares at this point in the lore, and is the God of War - but has no powers. You're a God and you have nothing to show for it. Not even the abilities from the first game have carried over like they do from 2 to 3. It's lame and the basic enemies are cheap and annoying more than difficult and enjoyable.
This and Ascension are the only two games I've never played in the series so I hope this picks up at some point. I am curious about his brother which is the narrative focus two hours in.

GTA IV's storyline being called Oscar worthy isn't any worse than Last of Us being compared to Citizen Kane.
calling something Oscar worthy is basically an insult lately

i'm ....almost okay with that. almost.
Taking anything out of IGN as a common consensus is absurd. The reviewer who called the game Oscar worthy is out of the industry now and writes about board games. Just saying.
For an open world game GTA's story amazing... Don't know if it was Oscar worthy or anything...
But you should most likely wait to play FF15 before taking out the pitchforks and torches.

Specifically we're talking GTAIV. Which, I thought, was okay for a story. Maybe that makes it "great" for a videogame? I don't know.
