this is why you don't release a game sandwiched between bf1 and cod like some drunk horny frat girl.
So it's looking like BF1 & Rise of Iron (it's reported it made more money than the original Destiny launch) are going to be the big successes, while Deus Ex & Titanfall lose money. I'm curious to see what happens with Call of Duty, it's getting a really bad buzz. It's got enough of a baked in audience of low information buyers to sell in big numbers regardless, but will it fall off? And if so, how much?

By Kibner Go To PostThis love for steep learning curves reminds me too much of "earn your fun" bullshit. Ideally, games should be as simple as possible to learn. Difficulty should come from having situations where mastery of the quick-to-learn basics is needed to succeed.are you still referring to the tutorial level? That sequence literally takes 10 seconds maaaaan, and is kinda a reference to a similar (tutorial) sequence in Demon's Souls.
Hiding game progression behind player failure is bad design. If player failure is used this way, it should be obvious that failing is beneficial to the player before they are placed in any such situation where it is the most optimal or intended solution.
these games are as simple as it gets when it comes to gaming mechanics actually, swing and avoid damage to progress. What's not simple is how you convince gamers that this isn't just another hack n slash game and you can't just go around mashing buttons mindlessly.
I appreciate them for doing things differently and their no hand holding approach most of all. That sense of exploration and dread is still unparalleled, and it's mainly thanks to these 'bad' design decisions.
By Dark PhaZe Go To PostI've nearly beaten Dark Souls before a save wipe and am nearly done with Dark Souls 2 on my pc so I'm not a noob to the franchise. I have googled a lot but don't want to do that in BB.you know, being a Souls veteran won't help you that much with BB since they kinda 'reversed' their mantra here lol.
In Bloodborne you get rewarded for being aggressive AF, where in Souls you kinda get used to ducking behind a shield and being methodical with your swings. Hell they even removed shields altogether and replaced them with a SHOTGUN. In Souls you're a spunkbubble against a hostile world, in Bloodborne you're basically Rorschach when he went to prison.
It's weird because dragons dogma relies so much on side quests, especially the terrible, terrible escort missions, to progress on the main story, that I just got turned off the whole thing when a giant orc appeared in a quest with almost no way of beating him if you jumped directly after the last story mission
By Dark PhaZe Go To Postthe UI in that titanfall 2 gif is horrificPAY ATTENTION TO ME

For what it's worth I'm absolutely in love with the aesthetic in BB so I can't wait to dig in, but disliked the intro.
@DY I ran past the werewolf into like 3 or 4 guys with cleavers that eventually killed me after I was running around in circles
I THOUGHT it might have been a story mechanic to kill me and bring me to "home base", which appears to be the case, but after encountering a bunch of locked doors and what not I just respawned to the area again without a weapon. I see now that there's something in that area that might provide a weapon.
You should read them.
You don't need to google...
There are a few areas that are a bit harder to find, but generally it wasn't necessary.

By Hitch Go To PostSame thing they did by not including a fucking charger with the 3DSXLThat was actually by consumer request, technically.

Yeah and so what?
Not saying a steep learning curve is bad, I do like it every now and then. But more often than not, I just want to turn my brain off and play a video game. It's a good way of relaxing for me, instead of perfecting some useless skill in a game. My favorite game is very much without much skill involved, other than a few puzzles, and yet Silent Hill 2 is a fantastic game anyway.

By Facism Go To PostMet up with my brother earlier and Silent Hill 2 came up. Good discussion. My sister used to watch me play Silent Hill when we were kids

Oxenfree starts a little slow, but once you hit the beach/cave it starts to pick up. I'm not far in, but I'm digging the atmosphere.
I don't know that I've played many of these types of games where being silent is an actual choice. Some of these characters probably think I'm an asshole. lol

By Hitch Go To PostThose consumers are cunts, then. The reasoning was that people already had so many AC adapters from buying so many systems that they wouldn't care if we stopped putting them in. So we listened. It's not like Nintendo stopped making/selling AC adapters in general. They just weren't included in the N3DSXL bundles so the cost would be kept down. So remember that shit the next time someone says "oh man Nintendo just doesn't listen to the customers." They actually take that shit kinda seriously.
By Smokey Go To PostTell Nintendo to put more than 4GB in their next system.No.
kthnx

Trying to figure out what to get on this target sale. Think it will probably be something for the following:
Dragon Quest Builders
Titanfall 2
XCOM 2
Skyrim (never played it originally)
Tomb Radier 2
Deus Ex
Any opinions on these?

Went right off DQB when I found out that it resets your progress every chapter
Fuck that. Same goes for timed missions in XCOM.
Deus Ex is decent but probably disappointing if you loved HR

By Hitch Go To PostTell Nintendo to go third partyBut I like having a console manufacturer try making consoles that aren't just shitty PCs. At least Nintendo includes possibly interesting gimmicks in their even shittier PCs.

You don't need 4GB of ram to run most mobile games though
By Ciaran Go To Postare you still referring to the tutorial level? That sequence literally takes 10 seconds maaaaan, and is kinda a reference to a similar (tutorial) sequence in Demon's Souls.Never played the game. Just speaking in generalities. There is a difference between no hand-holding and demonstrating the rules of the game by forcing the player to fail something they are lead to believe they can succeed in.

Having an encounter or scenario that is nearly, but not quite, impossible for the player to beat without informing the player of that difficulty beforehand is not good design for something that is meant to inspire a feeling of "fun" in the player. It's just a way to create a feeling of (minor, in this case) "unfairness" in the player towards the game.

but this was a different case, kinda like how you were (supposed to be) weak and vulnerable in MGS5's prologue. Except for not as long of course
I would rather not be bothered by that kinda story telling... It also seems to be more of a standand for Japanese devs than Western ones it seems...Can't really think of a Western game that made me fight an unwinnable fight off the top of my head...

The only game that I have bought for story telling in the last ten years is Trails in the Sky: SC. I honestly find 99.9% of all game stories complete trash. This may also be one of the reasons I often don't play single-player games.

Finally playing through Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines for the first time and man this game is so incredible. Writing shits on everything else, the setting is so well done even with these old graphics, and it never feels as overwhelming as hte old CRPGs did. The natural evolution of the RPG. Streamlined rather than dumbed down. It's a shame they never followed Troika's lead on this.
Combat's shit though. Bethesda should get the franchise and get Arkane&Avellone to make a new one.

Picked up Civ... played around in the start a bit.. Have not had a chance to block out 2 or 3 hours for it.. Feels REALLY good tho..
With Tyranny (RPG fix)/ Planet Coaster (Quirky sim/builder fix) and Mafia 3 (Killing racist fic) I should be set until mid 1st quarter...

In 2 there's a bit at the end of the first level (one of the best openings I've ever played) where you've lost your powers after beating the Colossus, and zeus arrives to absolutely hammer you while you're dragging your swords on the ground
Thinking about it, I'm gonna play 1 and 2, been years. Two of my favourite games, never beaten any of them on hard though :(
Yeah only have a PS4 and Wii U at the momentTotally suggest Skyrim (played it on the 360 the first time and had a blast but the PC version is the best version because of mods.) and X-Com 2 but again mods make the game waaaaay better but it is fun out the box.

Got back to bloodbourne
I can see why I missed the weapons when I first died. The framerate is so ridiculously awful and the sensory overload is so much that I didn't notice them on the ground given everything else that's drawing your attention. Decided to go with the pistol and the cane stick. Not sure if I made the right decision but I really wanted this to be a guideless run so not going to fret.
Combat is a lot more forgiving and fun than Dark Souls--that was something pretty immediately noticeable. Killed a lot of things and traveled quite a bit, ran to an area where I wasn't doing much damage and my experience with souls game made my spidey sense go off and I ran away back to areas where I seemed leveled enough for. Couldn't find a new lamp so I traveled to some lower level sewage passage where I got corned by a bunch of rats and died. Could have probably taken them easily but was just running for a lamp which allowed 15 of them to gain aggro on me. Annoying.
Back at it later, but I'm disappointed I couldn't find another lamp.
