Seems like there was an absolute tonne of misinformation going around about how much Nintendo stood to benefit from Pokemon Go. Even watching a BBC report on it yesterday, they made it sound like Nintendo owned the franchise and published the game.
Its strange how the GiantBomb San Franciso crew still talk as though alcohol is some interesting vice. Even my friends grew out of that when they were like 21, and its all they'd go on about before that. There is genuinely nothing as boring as someone describing how much they drank when it doesn't go anywhere.

Wtf happened with The Division . That shit fell off, don't even hear anything about DLC.

A co-worker recently was discussing The Division and then he looked over to me and said, "Just say you were right." I was confused af for a minute because I wasn't part of the discussion, and then he said that I was completely right that Ubisoft was gonna fuck up The Division. Apparently all of the updates have been terribad and that playing PVP is basically a trollfest. He described one scenario where a bunch of high level players would just camp a sight and then grenade the shit out of it whenever someone would approach. He basically described it as unplayable online.
I liked what I played of it, and I didn't jump into the retail release like I wanted becaue it came out around the time of the birth of my son. With those games you gotta get in early. Just weird though. I haven't seen it mentioned in a long time.
I still think The Division accomplished everything you could reasonably expect it to. Graphics check, performance across all platforms check, great gameplay up until the end game check...even the dark zone was pretty fun for earlier levels where the try hards had moved on to purely end game levels.
Yea, the end game was fukkery, but the concept was never really going to work. People get tired of having to group up for fear of getting rekt in the dark zone, and the pve content was a joke.
But the important thing is they built a great foundation and the game sold well. I think they'll need to completely scrap the dark zone end game structure in the sequel and focus on raids and actual focused PVP modes like destiny. The quasi-pvp/pve ends up being a bit of a shit show for everyone.

There's nothing really that special aside from it being perfect in every way.
The division was never going to be a sustained pvp hit. There's nothing about it that says that.
Then you read about how awful TDZ became for anyone not max levelled out... Meh.

Yeah, the loot became shitty too. Everything was literally about maximizing DPS or skills and had little to do with how the guns felt or looked.
I don't think stark differences in damages and health can really work in a PVP setting for any game really. Even Destiny makes things more or less equal in their two modes that take level differences into account. You have to be really underleveled for it to be an issue.

Everything was literally about maximizing DPS or skills and had little to do with how the guns felt or looked. It could possibly, maybe, almost work with a lot of effort and continued balancing if they used a group "point" system like some tabletop wargames use to make armies. Basically, each member is worth <x> points based off their level and abilities. Gear is worth <y> points. A group/army can be made up of as many members as wanted, but the total point value of all members combined can't be higher than <z> points.

It's essentially a more granular version of the "Build a NBA Superteam for $15" thing that was running around on ESPN a few weeks ago. All the issues that are present with that exercise are also present in this model so it still wouldn't be well balanced.
I got the urge recently and have restarted Witcher 3 on the hardest setting with New Game Plus.
The combat is so, so, so bad when street thugs can take multiple hits and Geralt is killed in two or three strikes. This is compounded by the fact that the load times are 90 seconds long every time you die.
New Game plus is turning out to be a huge mistake. Instead of being able to wipe the floor with lower level goons, everyone and everything has been adjusted to correlate with Geralt's end game rank. So guys that were 17 rank are now 47 and so on. It's fucking dumb but I'm enjoying playing Gwent again :(

Thinking of playing the WoW trial just to see. Been watching the videos of Dan from GB doing it, and it looks like I'd have fallen in deep if I'd looked into it and had the money at the time.

My recommendation to playing without going nuts on it is to find one character and commit to it completely.

I think its fine. The main issue at this point is software with Nintendo and them basically taking their console and handheld dev teams and having them all work towards one product that's probably 300 dollars or less should create a pretty compelling product even as just a Nintendo box. Having a bunch of software always coming that's Wii U tier graphically is good as long as the handheld teams can bring their stuff up to that level which I think they can.
By etiolation Go To PostI always recommend people try the newer MMOs. WoW is beyond outdated at this point. They're not as good and don't hook you long-term. The thing with WoW being 'outdated' is they have a larger amount of stuff for you to do and see at the endgame level than any of the newer MMOs do nowadays..

.
It's a weird thing. Nintendo do own one third of the company that owns pokemon. On top of that Nintendo are the owner of the licensing of the pokemon logos and the pokemon names.
They also own some of Creatures Inc, that is one of the other 2 shareholders.
But should also obviously be clear that they don't fully own it. But... They do have a pretty huge part in it.
I feel like the amount of 'brown n bloom FPS' was never as bad as the amount of metroidvania-likes in the market now.
By P-SY Go To PostNX detailsI think I would be pretty happy with that. I really think a Nintendo system where all their games are consolidated plus presumably the remaining Japanese developers still making portable games would be enough to get me on board.

The thing with WoW being 'outdated' is they have a larger amount of stuff for you to do and see at the endgame level than any of the newer MMOs do nowadays..I will vouch for FF XIV again here. It has A LOT of content. Not as much as WoW, but I mean... fuck, it's a ton. It also makes it possible to still pug almost all of it with dungeon roulette and level/gear synching. The dungeon roulettes don't have the big raids but you can still queue up for them or make pugs for them.
You also aren't penalized by having alt-itis in the game since you can be every class and every profession on the same character. The only thing having an actual alt does is allow you to be a different race (though there are potions you can get in-game or through the store to change that, too) and have another set of lockout timers for the current raid.
The biggest negatives to FF XIV are an awkward glamour/cosmetic system (no full wardrobe feature like GW2) and too many filler Main Story Quests (that you have to go through in order to unlock new dungeons, features, etc.).
The current cosmetic system works by acquiring a craftable and lootable item and applying it to an item you own. That item's appearance is now stored in this item. You then use it on another piece of equipment and now it looks like the one that was stored in the item. It's bad, but works. It is also unlikely to change for as long as they keep PS3 support.
The Main Story Quest bloat can be a big turnoff for some people. Thankfully, they are working on a way to consolidate or remove a lot of it by the time the new expansion comes out (sometime this year, I think?).

I'm big into Star Wars lore so tOR is something I try to play on occasion for a Star Wars itch, but I just don't have the time to get serious about it.
How is the loot/cosmetic system in FFXIV?
The thing that looks like it would have got me most into WoW is the weapon/armour/pet/mount progression
edit: somehow missed an entire paragraph lol. Is there a free trial?

If you find the process to sign up confusing, please let me know. SE sucks ass at web stuff so it would be completely understandable. I am on the Excalibur server (an NA server), which is highly populated so it may be difficult to create a character on if you want to join me there.
Of note: there is a free trial on Steam. Do not be suckered by this. If you make a Steam trial account, you are then locked into Steam to buy the game and any expansions. If you just register normally, you can buy the game and expansions from any non-Steam source to get the game at a possibly lower price.
If you want to play on PC and PS4, you have to buy the PC and PS4 clients, but they share the same subscription. You are basically paying to unlock access on a different platform. Steam is considered a different platform than normal PC, which is why things get confusing with it.
Somewhat related, the game controls very well with a console controller, even on PC. There is actually an option to have your controller inputs be sent to the game even when the game isn't your active window. Makes it easier to watch Netflix or something on another monitor while grinding out gathering or something.
Also, if you really like pets (minions in this game) and mounts, they added the ability to summon random ones that you own, which is nice. Some of them are quest rewards, some are achievement rewards, others are bought with gil or other currency, and yet more are just drops from certain bosses.
Pretty Pretty Princess is most definitely the end-game for a lot of people and there are lots of options for it. Also a ton of ways to pose and control where your character's eyes are looking for screen shots. Things like a /visor command will show or hide visors, glasses, and other such things. Some minions can even perch on a character's shoulder, iirc.

Oh yeah, there is also a mini game called Verminion where you can use your collected minions in some type of RTS-lite game. I haven't played it at all, so can't speak on it.
Just realized I never answered your question about the gear in the game. Aside from appearances, the gear is boring. There are no clicky-effects (which I like), but there are also no cool modifiers or proc chances or anything. It's just +stats. The min/max game at the high end is also kind of shallow. There is rarely more than 2 or 3 BiS possibilities for any given gear slot.
Each piece of gear has an ilvl associated with it. This ilvl controls how high any particular stat on a weapon can go. Some pieces of gear have slots which you can use to put materia in. Materia is just +stats. Nearly every piece of gear at the high end is maxed out on damage/armor and your primary stat so you use materia to bump up secondary stats that aren't maxed out. Secondary stats include %damage boost, GCD reduction, cast time reduction, crit hit damage, parry chance, and dodge chance.
As a result, the BiS items change depending on what combination of secondary stats you are prioritizing.
There are also chain quests to run to get a Relic weapon. It is a weapon that you can get without raiding that is just a half-step down from the top-end raiding gear. There is a new step or three every time they release a new patch that introduces a new tier of gear. The original versions used to be fun because it involved clearing difficult, but fun, boss battles. The current step is soul crushing as it is just mindless grinding. A lot of people have complained about it so hopefully they change it in the future and don't go back to this model.

Completely disagree. Newer MMOs are better. There's nothing objectively better about WoW at this point. Combat is outdated. The systems are outdated. The approach is not in tune with modern gaming.
Have you really played the new MMOs? I tried WoW again few years ago and could not stand it anymore.
As for content, most of the content of WoW is trivialized by the constant level increases. You do have years and years of content, but people will only play the last 10% of content. This is a product of the reward and leveling systems. Sure, you can go back to Sunwell at max level, but its mindless.
I actually got back onto WoW in the last two weeks. A nostalgia bomb hit me and given that it can basically run on any computer these days, I gave it another go.
I just canceled my subscription after only investing 3-4 hours into it. It's got some great core mechanics, but it hasn't aged well. The nostalgia/memories I had of it just weren't there. The gameplay is nowhere near as fluid as I remembered it being and the story progression is slower and uneventful than I remember. So be it.
Maybe in the future a newer MMOG will come out that will provide me the same joy I remember WoW providing, but I can see it not happening because, well, MMOs are incredibly difficult to make, especially in a modern game design/cost world. Perhaps Blizzard can take what makes DIII at its core good and expand it into a more streamlined MMO experience.

You'll never again feel that feeling of having your MMO world cherry popped. If people were more aware that they're looking for nostalgia rather than quality, they could enjoy modern MMOs. GW2 and BDO both gave me a great feeling, but it helped that I knew my old memories were heavily nostalgia tinted.

What if I told you, 'have you really played WoW?' the combat and depth of talent choices encourage variety where other MMOs lack it due to the large cast of classes where there's typically a massive difference between the two. Games like Wildstar and TERA feel completely spammy by proxy.

BDO2's progression is a complete nightmare and there's a reason it fell off the map instantly.
FF is the only MMO I'd say can compare to WoW when you're talking theme park MMOs.
I still have fond memories of me and a buddy rolling people in Vanguard with our unusual class/race/spec combinations.
