New Republic: Taking a Vacation May Save your Career
- Page 1 of 1
Europeans don’t just look forward to more time off than us in the summer, but all year round. Some of this American work ethic is elective, but some of it is certainly imposed on us. The United States is the only advanced country that doesn't guarantee that its citizens will get paid vacation time and holidays. European countries, meanwhile, ensure at least 20 days of paid vacation, with some going as high as 30 days, and most rich countries make sure workers get at least six paid holidays. That leaves nearly a quarter of Americans without any access to paid vacation time.
We’re even one of just 16 countries that doesn’t make sure that workers get at least some time off during the seven-day week. That weekend most of us enjoy come Friday night is not backed up by American policy, but instead is a voluntary employer perk.
But it’s not just policy fueling our overwork; it’s also cultural. Professionals, managers, and executives with a smartphone spend 72 hours a week (including the weekend) checking work e-mail. It’s become a nonstop world, especially for professional workers. But all employers are offering fewer vacation days and sick days than they used to. And those who are lucky enough to get paid vacation days aren’t using them. A Glassdoor survey found that three-quarters of American employees don't use all of their vacation time. The average person takes just half of what she’s allotted. Fifteen percent don't take any time whatsoever. A different study estimated that we leave about three vacation days unused each year. Even 60 percent of those who took time off in the Glassdoor survey still worked on vacation, many of them because they felt like they couldn’t truly log off.

Yet another area in which we're woefully behind the rest of the developed world.
This commercial epitomizes much of what's wrong with American work culture:

That ad is referenced in the article, but that post summarizes why it's a terrible ad. 'Merica. My jaw hit the floor the first time I saw it (apologies for not clicking the link and seeing that the ad is referenced in the first paragraph  ).
I'm in the wonderful situation of being "self-employed." In case you didn't know, that's code for "my workplace is too cheap to pay employment taxes and workers compensation insurance so they 'ask' me to sign a doc saying I'm not their employee."
Lots of people in the energy industry work under these conditions. No benefits, no retirement plan, no paid leave, and I have to withhold and pay my own taxes.
There are some positives (the freedom of being able to take time off whenever you want it, primarily), but overall I would much rather have a nice 401k and paid leave so I don't have to worry about missing a paycheck when I go on vacation.
And don't even get me started on maternity leave. My wife's former workplace forced their female employees to take all of their vacation time and sick leave *first* when they gave birth, then gave them unpaid leave for a certain period of time (I believe it was 6 weeks). Their maternity leave policy was basically "you should be thankful we're even willing to hold your job for you since you had the audacity to get pregnant."
All of that is repulsive and far too common. Nike and others got in some shit recently because they treated their on-site contractors like employees buy without any of the benefits.
And then there's things like that certain professions (like mine!) exempts employers from paying out overtime because of reasons.

I believe the pendulum has swung too far toward corporations and employers, and the political structure of the country is now set up to explicitly serve monied interests. Hard to see a way toward more workers' rights at the moment.
And then there's things like that certain professions (like mine!) exempts employers from paying out overtime because of reasons.
I'm sure if I really wanted to I could cause a stink and prove that I'm actually an employee, but my workplace's employee benefits aren't even that great anyways. Not really worth fighting for.
I love that Cadillac ad. Asia laughs at lazy Americans and your two day weekends. Tired? Drink it off, sissy boy! And have a cigarette. Any real man's lungs can take it.
Murica is zany.
I'd bore you with details of all the perks I used to get, but i'm a full time student who's getting a fortnightly cheque from the government to support my study. And an inflation only loan to put the cost of university onto.

Murica is zany.Weird. It's like your government recognizes that investing in its citizens pays off more in the long run than allowing corporate interests to fuck them over for short-term gain.

The current govt is trying to Americanise our university system.
They're not getting voted back in.
Yeah Giri is right, previous governments did but that all went south over the last decade. Now they want to make younger gererations pay for everything that they got for free.
I couldn't imagine not getting 4 weeks paid holidays, plus public/national holidays and sick leave. That's not even taking into account compulsory superannuation (retirement fund).
