Now try driving on that when your daily is an M3... They're finally re-paving Corbett Ave, which is criminally bad, but even then it's gonna take months. They only just got around to redoing Market, parts of 101 after Golden Gate, Gough and Franklin. Everything else is warzone streets.
By reilo Go To PostAt least your gas tax goes to making public roads drivable. The roads in SF are basura.
I wish. The roads are shit, both in my town and the surrounding cities. This is with gas tax and actual fucking ROAD TAX that we have to pay every year. Potholes, deteriorating, uneven surfaces, pointless excavations, uneven cambers. There's one traffic island near me that's like driving on ice because the surface is so bad. It's been like that for at least 10 years.
By Prolapse Go To Posttry paying £0.995 per litre. We're not seeing any benefits at the pump here in the UK just yet, if ever.£0.995 is super cheap m8

sorry Gondo, i hope you get through this relatively unharmed.

If I'm laid off, ultimately I'll find a way to get by until prices recover sufficiently.
I'm assuming you work for a smaller oil company gondo? That's who's being effected the most. I'm at Big Oil so it's not AS drastic of a punch, but it's still there.

Thankfully I have quite a bit of experience and I do work that isn't purely exploratory, but there will definitely be cutbacks if things keep going this way. Hopefully I'm lucky enough to keep working here, and if not I'll find work doing something else.
Heard through the grapevine that there are about to be big layoffs at Devon Energy. Fun times :D
Cheap oil and Saudi Arabia burning their main (only?) source of income is all in all great. The transition to better types of energies is happening all over the world anyway, the oil industry will end at some point at least as we know it now.
Decent news today from our biggest client. They aren't planning layoffs or cutbacks in bonuses, and they still plan on continuing to drill but at a reduced rate.
They can apparently break even this year with an average price of $37/barrel. Right now prices are a bit over $31.
Definitely makes me feel more secure for the time being.

Saudi Arabia burning their only source of income isn't really a great thing, because if that government falls it will be replaced by something a lot more asshole and four times as desperate.
so....Obama wants to slap a $10 per barrel tax on US oil now to fund "green" initiatives.
Hell to the fuck no.

Thought things had stabilized, but I just got laid off.
The job hunt begins.
On the bright side they said they want me back when things recover, but of course they have no idea when that'll be.

Oh jeez. Sorry to hear that Gondo. Obviously not related to this industry but I managed to dodge a wave of layoffs at my job.
Hopefully you find an even better job next.

Man
Really sorry to hear that. This shit really sucks.
Thanks guys, it means a lot. Thankfully my wife's job is steady so we're not in dire straits yet, but I need to find something ASAP so we don't have to dip into our savings.
I have a law degree so there are lots of options there, but virtually all of my experience is in oil and gas. I'm looking at it as an opportunity to try something new.

FYI: Found a job for the time being. It's in oil and gas but the guy apparently has steady work and it's only a small paycut.
Very thankful that I was able to find work again so quickly. Still gonna look for work in other areas that are more aligned with my interests. I don't want my long-term livelihood to be dependent on the price of a single commodity.

Congrats! It sounds like you're in a transitionary period all together, and you it's only healthy and beneficial to yourself to keep searching for the right fit.

Now, back to fighting about Steven Adams in the NBA thread.
It actually worked out really well. I've been out of work this week but I've been really busy taking care of stuff around the house.
I'm going to New Zealand next week to visit my best friend (a trip I've been planning for months), so I'll have had a 3-week vacation when it's all said and done and I have work waiting for me when I get back.

I got gas for under 2$ a gallon in co cal this last week. All the shitty excuses to keep Cali's prices high have finally dried up.
EDIT: Fuck ... sorry to hear that Gondo.
EDIT 2: Glad you found a temp placeholder so quickly.

By Smokey Go To PostOil has risen 30% last 11 days. Sitting at $34 a barrel. Yay?Definitely good. Needs to stabilize closer to $40 to start to see some recovery though from what I understand.
By Smokey Go To PostMan I'm really happy for you Gondo, congrats.
Haliburton is cutting another 8,000 jobs.
