This is just horrific.
R.I.P to all those people and my heart goes out to everyone of their families.
I hope they confirm soon or somebody takes responsibility about whether it was shot down or not because if it was, somebody really fucked up.
Reading comments like "well, I guess you shouldn't have flown over a war zone!" is some of the dumbest shit I've ever read.

It's pretty much confirmed that it was shot down. The question is whether it was Russian separatists like officials are claiming, and if it was, how much involvement Russia had in supporting them.
Which... World War III... yea....
Which... World War III... yea....
They apparently thought they were shooting down a Ukrainian plane... which isn't exactly better, but would have been less likely to bring about a world war.
People need to stop being so cavalier with how freely they throw around "WWIII" like it's just another war.
There would be no winners in a third World War. All of humanity would lose.

Pretty sure I didn't throw the term around to be callous about it, but because in this instance it might be a huge precursor. WWI was started over a single assassination (damn Serbs), so this is just another instance in a line of longstanding once the past few years.

Even though WWI kick-started after the assassination, WWI was going to happen soon, regardless. The assassination wasn't what actually caused the war, it was simply the final spark that lit the fuse, so to speak.
We're a long ways away from a WWIII.
RIP to those passengers. Just terrible.

.... ugh.
On Wednesday, the Ukrainian government claimed that a Russian military plane shot down a Ukrainian fighter jet. Just two days ago, Ukrainian officials suggested that a military transport plane carrying food and water for troops was shot down by an advanced rocket system fired from Russia.

DY, aren't you glad you're getting out of the army right now?Quite pissed that I'm not staying active, actually. Shit like this gets me out of bed in the morning. Bad people need to get fucked up, etc.
Edit: That being said. Sanctions and strongly worded resolutions will be thrown around on TV. No war is going to start over this. If anything, it'll just cripple separatist activities.
horrible tragedy
does this put enough pressure on russia to withdraw their support of ukranian separatists? is it too late for that?
shit could get real dirty over there with all of these SAMs lying around belonging to people who have no real political accountability to the rest of the world...

Yeah, it's just gonna be "tough luck, Crimea." Fact is, the people doing the shooting want to be separate and have ethnic ties to Russia. Nobody's pointing nukes at each other over that, Russia's gonna play the heavy and win.
Everyone in Europe has ties to everywhere else.DY, aren't you glad you're getting out of the army right now?Quite pissed that I'm not staying active, actually. Shit like this gets me out of bed in the morning. Bad people need to get fucked up, etc.

You want to live in russia, move to russia.
These people aren't being "liberated".

Not saying it's the right way to handle things, but what you are you gonna do at this point? Even if you get Crimea back you're just going to have an embittered populace and a heavily divided country that's going to continue to be unstable.

If Russia is so concerned about "its people" they can easily offer to take anyone who wants to move. And if they all feel so strong about being russian, it's surprising they didn't move there already.
But we know that it's got absolutely nothing to do with that at all. So it's a moot conversation.
Crimea should be "given" back to the Ukraine.
Sigh, the flight was actually connecting on to AU. There's about 27 dead Aussies on the plane.
Ugh.
Sadly we can confirm Melbourne couple Albert and Marie Rizk were two of 27 Australians killed when flight MH17 went down over Ukraine.
The couple has two children and have lived in the Sunbury area for over 20 years, and were believed to be involved with a number of local sporting clubs.
One of Mr Rizk’s colleagues confirmed the couple’s family had been contacted by officials to notify them of their deaths.
Ugh.
Between this, Isreal and Gaza, the rapes going on in India, and Lord knows what in China, I'm afraid I have become callous.
I mean, I didn't even feel 9/11. Prolly because I was in Alabama. All this chaos is just another day in humanity to me. Too much history in the brain, and struggles with empathy.

I fancy myself a smart guy, but I cannot comprehend the magnitude of the US's alliance with Isreal. Seems like at all costs.
As far as Syria is concerned, this article says it best:
n Syria, however, “there’s no good choice,” according to Joshua Landis, a Syria expert and the director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma. “Its a broken country with no future, no resources and a lot of militias that are diametrically opposed to American values,” he said.
