My internet at home cuts out when I open a new tab to browse
- Page 1 of 1
Say, I was streaming something in another window and was just watching that for a few minutes or downloading something in a third-party but haven't touched my Chrome browser for a bit? My internet will cut out. Typing ESPN into the URL browser after a few minutes of inactivity into a new tab will immediately make my download drop out to a crawl completely.
To save time:
- My DNS is set to Google at the router level
- I have Linksys E2500 N600 router
Not sure what it can be. Any ideas?

Man, if it was even porn at least I could explain, but it's not even that. It's just regular browsing or watching Netflix and then the internet dies for a 10-15 seconds.
I got an "unsupported browser" message from FB despite being on Chrome today. I quit and relaunched and it stopped but that was real strange, especially since the chat side was working too just not the feed.
I'll have to monitor it better. Was wondering if it was my tab extension (Currently) but it's not an issue at work despite my setup being identical.

By Jay Whatever Go To PostHave you tried updating your bios?Should be up to date.
EDIT: Seems to be doing it whenever I am downloading a large file. Firefox doesn't do it. Chrome definitely does.
Hrmm, disabling the Currently extension seemingly did it... All that extension does is get the time and the weather. Maybe it's because fetching my location and that cuts things off for some reason?
By Jay Whatever Go To PostThat wasn't a serious suggestion. I don't know what a bios does.lmao

Could be your router's firewall conflicting with the extension every time it tries to ping your location.

Hmm if it was Windows 10 I 'd know what was up, not sure about Mac. It's possible that extension is opening a lot of connections and your router isn't dropping them fast enough, slowing down your internet each time a tab is opened and the extension triggers (afiak, each tab is sandboxed from the other, so any extensions are duplicated into each one if they hook into tabs)

i almost spit out my drink, you wanker.
Update the OS. Updating the OS solves the wifi issue. Also update Chrome and all your browsers. Install Little Snitch and find out what is trying to connect to your network. Download Malware Bytes and scrape off any malware.
*EDIT*
Linksys fam? REALLY? Get you a Netgear and thank us later. Go purchase Clamxav or google free mac antivirus and get out whatever is in your system. You prolly went to a sports streaming site and got hit without you knowing it.

I ended up buying a new Motorola Surfboard to replace the crappy modem that we currently have, so maybe that'll help. I am certain I don't have any viruses because OSX.

This has been my experience in the past. It's usually the modem or router that just craps out - it says everything's running fine, speednet test looks great, but real world usage is just dead.
I go through routers every 2-3 years and that's how it always starts out.
By 33MillionDollarMen Go To PostI can only imagine how clouded the Wifi is in a place like SF proper.
Probably looks like a Jackson Pollack painting if you could see the waves hitting the walls.
It was kind of fun being the first family in our neighborhood to have broadband internet.. only about 3 houses had dialup, I got my first job and threw most of my paycheck at getting broadband at the time. Because of that, we were the only ones with wireless internet. One of my brothers' friends that lived a block and a half away could get on our internet from his house.
Today there's roughly about 30 wireless home networks in that same neighborhood. Can barely get wifi from our home network being on the front sidewalk anymore.
I can't get wifi from my living room to my bedroom and it's a 25 foot walk. Wifi just outright dies in the hallway.
Oh glorious SB6141. Got real internet speeds now. PITA to get the damn thing setup with a router, but the cloning my laptop's MAC address trick and calling Comcast one more time did the trick.
The Slaent architect was having internet connectivity issues for a business week. Slaent had a good run.

Debatable if Blackace would let this happen.
