Twitter to launch 10,000 character limit feature and thus become just another company that does social networking

Longer tweets are coming soon to Twitter.http://recode.net/2016/01/05/twitter-considering-10000-character-limit-for-tweets/
Twitter is building a new feature that will allow users to tweet things longer than the traditional 140-character limit, and the company is targeting a launch date toward the end of Q1, according to multiple sources familiar with the company’s plans. Twitter is currently considering a 10,000 character limit, according to these sources. That’s the same character limit the company uses for its Direct Messages product, so it isn’t a complete surprise.
Twitter has no idea why it appealed to people in the first place. I'm convinced. All they've done in the recent past is take steps to make it like everything else.
I think it was the right move to enhance their feature set especially around video, images, and audio. What they also needed to do was brand themselves in a way that they set apart, but instead all of these Social Networking websites sorta do the same thing and mostly look the same.
Twitter needed to focus more on improving what made people use it in the first place: breaking news aggregation, rapid reaction and celebrity interaction. Mainly, they needed to improve upon discovery and sharing of those things.
Meanwhile, Facebook is leading the pack as far as news/media aggregation and curated content is concerned, but Twitter is trying to figure out how to get more people to share photos of their kids or something.

Twitter succeeding never made sense. It had less features, less security options and less characters than any other social media app before. It was always a shittier version of everything else you've been doing, but it had celebrities using it and people got obsessed with saying things to celebs.

It was the anti-Facebook for me, which I find to be a totally miserable experience for a lot of reasons. Twitter was easy, it worked, I didn't have to see my mom posting her weird political opinions.

It was an information and reaction network, rather than a social network.
I never joined but always considered for a breaking news aggregater. However I only wanted to follow political and sports reporters and all that news broke in various threads I read anyway. Like why join twitter for WOJ tweets when all the relevant ones will be posted here?
I do agree that Twitter's original success had a lot to do with the 140 limit so this is kinda surprising.

By reilo Go To PostThis is an accurate description of Twitter and why it's popular. It was an information and reaction network, rather than a social network.Yeah, exactly. If you're using it as a social network, I think you're kind of using it wrong, really. It's not made for that, not with the limited interaction feature set and character limit. I first joined like seven years ago now and was pretty skeptical of it. But when I put it to use as a news aggregator, I totally got it. As a tool for that, it works, but being able to talk to people I know sometimes is really a secondary part of the experience.

I never liked the brevity. I feel like Twitter quickly became the strongest argument against brevity.
It works as a news aggregate, but I feel there's so many of those that I'm not yearning for one particular source.
I only ended up getting a twitter when places kept asking for twitter handles and I needed a place to get away from the progressively dumber posts I was getting on facebook. (Though facebook's "Block posts from X site" feature is a godsend.)
Twitter is currently testing a version of the product in which tweets appear the same way they do now, displaying just 140 characters, with some kind of call to action that there is more content you can’t see. Clicking on the tweets would then expand them to reveal more content. The point of this is to keep the same look and feel for your timeline, although this design is not necessarily final, sources say.so basically twitlonger
don't really see the issue.
By Fenderputty Go To PostWho the fuck wants to read full essay tweets?Ever used twit longer? Sounds exactly like it without having to follow an external link. Your time line will look exactly the same, if you want to read a longer than 140 character tweet you can, if you don't? you don't have to.
I fyou don't have to read a tweet longer than a standard tweet and it doesn't change the look of your timeline, then what's the problem? News breakers aren't going to start writing 9000 character tweets all of a sudden just because they can. At least they having breathing room now so they dont have 2 twit lik dis.
I'm probably not a good opinion. I think I'm the only dude alive without twitter or facebook. My wife set me up and instagram but I rarely ever use it.
One thing to note is that Twitter will not just display 10,000 characters in your timeline. It'll be truncated to 140 characters with a CTA to read the full thing.
Does Twitter have like groups you can make if you just want to see what particular individuals you're following are saying?

By PSYCH! Go To PostCalled 'Lists'I'm confused why I can't have a sidebar of Lists on my homepage and aggregate the followers based on whichever I click or something. Why isn't Twitter doing stuff like that, why the long screeds?

Why isn't Twitter doing stuff like that, why the long screeds? That's exactly some of my frustrations with Twitter's website. Programs like Tweetbot utilize lists in a lot better manner, but Twitter as a whole hasn't done a good job improving and utilizing them with an improved UX.
I mean I'd love to basically just load up home page and click Basketball for that day and load up the latest tweets from that, or comedians, or activists etc. That would help me actually give a shit about twitter. Barely following anyone but I feel overwhelmed already by the sheer volume of shit.
Yes, you can do that with lists. Not only that, but you can add people to lists that you don't follow, so they won't show up in your main timeline.

By reilo Go To PostThat's why Twitter is most useful with third-party apps but they cost $.And they've been actively cracking down on apps using their APIs for years. Still, what I paid for Falcon Pro was money well spent.
I waited 2 years for the OSX Twitter app to get a legit update, splurged $9.99 on Tweetbot, and then two weeks later they release an update to the official app that's basically Tweetbot.
By reilo Go To PostThat's why Twitter is most useful with third-party apps but they cost $.When I was younger I would have gone through the best addons/apps in order to make stuff look better/cleaner but if you're making mad bucks, have full fledged teams and your UI/UX is still shit, fuck you honestly. Tired of these huge ass companies that can't get their shit together in terms of UI/UX. What is some of the team being paid for? To redirect emails and just adjust the UI a bit when resolutions change again? Sorry for the rant but this stuff just irks the shit out of me.
FYI, Facebook may be the home of curated content, but people are finding it less and less useful for interaction, and interaction levels.
Twitter has been leading for a while in getting people to actually interact with the content that is posted.
I don't know why that is exactly, but it could be because twitter tended to stay younger, while facebook seems to have attracted an older crowd (everybodys parents), who are in general less likely to interact with on line media.

Define "interact", because by every metric, Facebook gets far more click-throughs on content than Twitter does, which is where the money is.

To the point many are considering dropping Facebook.

I just know that from many of the reports I read, the actual statistics state otherwise, which is why Twitter is "in trouble".

I'd say twitter is in trouble because they haven't found a way to monetize it?
I'm not sure how they even make money. Like, at all.
I mean, i know Facebook has had several close calls themselves with unprofitably almost fucking them over. I'm not even sure if they're profitable YET.

Facebook's been mad profitable for years. They reported $2.94bil in profit last year and have $36bil in total equity.
I've used Twicca on android for years now and have been very happy with it. There are times when a tweet conflicts, and does not appear, but it's so much nicer than the stock Twitter app.
This character limit bump isn't surprising but it is disheartening because as many people have pointed out already, the appeal was short concise information from confirmed outlets on any number of subjects. Twitter was a tool of interaction that linked you to the more. Any attempt at trying to become an all inclusive hub sounds like a losing proposition to me. Time will tell I suppose.

Its gonna be facebook and instagram as the big two really soon. If they had just moved it to 200 everybody would be ecstatic. with a 10,000 limit twitter is just a worse version of tumblr
you guys are overreacting, if they add 10k character limit as a tweet modifier akin to image attachments I think it'll be really good. Standard tweets should remain 140 characters, but people posting images of text was dumb, so something like this was needed.
tweet storms were the best thing about twitter though, I wonder how that'll be affected
also twitter users engage more deeply with brands, but facebook posts get more likes, hence the change from favs to like on twitter. looking at old stats won't be reflective of current behaviours. facebook is less valuable to brands anyway because of their shitty reach limitations.

This is exactly how I use twitter. I think they just lucked into it though and obviously have no idea how to make it work. Who exactly was asking for moments?
Like there is no consistency in their apps across platforms. Most of the Android clients are hot garbage, the web version lacks basic features (no muting?) so now I'm using TweetDeck but it doesn't allow you to not auto play video content (smh).
Tweetbot is fantastic but limited to iOS/Mac, I'd gladly pay again for a Desktop version
I attended a Twitter in london meet up (for tech and data scientists) which gave some insights on to what direction they are trying to move the business. They are very much anti facebook like much has been said, but I think to their detriment, the will never recommend things you should read or propose things you may like which is a HUGE opportunity miss for a money spinner. I personally dont think there is much money in the type of customer/user insights they are offering/selling (when I say much, in comparative terms to somewhere like facebook). Whether they want to admit it or not people want personalization, people want things recommended to them I cant get my head around why they cant see the trend.

focusing on live events is their focus, I'm not sure I like it, but it does differentiate them from their competitors
