. it's mothafucking 2016 and I need to really start grinding so I can escape my day job and make money doing what I love. I'm gonna use this thread as a daily sketchbook to post sketches, studies and what not every single day on journey to learn how to draw and paint.
I'm aware that this thread will be 99% my posts but anybody is free to comment or critique.
everything is shit
Did a couple longer poses(10-30 min) and a buch of 45-60 sec poses. the tan bg image is from friday while the greys are from today.
This is quite different from most of your other work which focuses on faces. The ability to draw motion and movement is quite tough and these look really good. You get a good sense of activity from them.

haven't done gestures in years,
definitely my favorite types of sketching.
Long poses are nice if you want to render,
but nothing rejuvenates my creative spirit more than gestures. <3
some i've done. i think these were 30sec or 1min poses. ink on sketchbooks.
edit:
when i have some down time soon, maybe i'll head over to a workshop and do some sketches,
just to see how shitty i am now.

By vire Go To PostNice job psy! Will follow along. No Clue!
What would be your dream job in the art world?
By Dark PhaZe Go To Posti'll do some stuff today–destiny inspired classes for funcan't wait to see.
good shit kado
.
Was running on 2 hours of sleep and did 12 hours at the job and fuck these excuses, could only muster this crap tonight. My say off is today so I'll do a ton more.
trying to focus more and breaking down shapes and forms, I keep straying from it and make everything harder than it should be and that doesn't help with the frustration. Really trying to focus on the lower bodies, it's one of my more glaring weaknesses.
More figure drawing today, first image is an hour of quick figures/gestures ranging from 30 secs to 90 secs. Then two 30 min poses, and some hands. Still trying to better organize shapes. still sucks, still frustrating.
trying to just grasp the gesture instead of worrying about the details, 30-60 second poses and a 5 min pose. some hands and feet, fuuuuck i hate this shit
By Dark PhaZe Go To PostYour doing really well imoI think this video does a fantastic job and explaining how lighting works. breaks it down it simple rules you can apply to anything.
How did you best progress with your lighting? That stuff really gets me
I'm shit at lighting but it's not too hard to udnerstand at all. and from there it just on making sure you grasp how to correctly wrap light on your shapes and forms, apply it to different materials and making sure your values are correct but that comes with practice and observation.
still working at it every night, just going to put up a big post sunday night to wrap up friday+sat+sunday.
week one over i guess, first image is more practice, went longer with the poses. tried to really understand some of the mechanics of the joints. second image is done without any ref, try to apply what I've been doing, it was rough. tbh there's about 2 other images i didn't post because they're even worse than this shit. last image is just a quick sketch for sanity.
so far this week has been fucking horrible in a good way? It sucks because im drawing shit I'm absolutely fucking terrible at but I'm facing it, you know?
might focus more and hands and feet this week but still do figures.

You're doing good man. You'll never nail your first drawing or sketch, but your second will be an improvement. You just gotta find the glimpses of the good stuff that keeps you going and apply that to your next work and keep digging at it.

You just gotta find the glimpses of the good stuff that keeps you going and apply that to your next work and keep digging at it.yep.....but damn if it ain't depressing. I know it's dumb I shouldn't be doing it Every time I look at my Tumblr/twitter/Facebook feed and see other artist's(who are in the same age range) work it feels like I'm light years away from where I'd like to be and it's crippling.
to recognize shapes and curves that I didn't really take into account before. The hatchings are just me trying to create some sort of visual relationship between angles of the arm with the forearm to improve foreshortening.
Another week, no progress yet but it takes time. Not sure when I'm gonna tackle perspective or landscapes, I've been actively afraid of that stuff.
week three shit, slacked a little. missing an image, no idea what happened to it. a little figure drawing a little sketches. trying to see i f i can do a complete sketch with the whole body hands and feet showing every day this upcoming week to see if i can incorporate everything i've been practicing this month.
I can see the progress, honestly. The last image shows it the best because you've been able to capture perspective onto the character without it being at the similar angles you've been drawing. It gives him depth and volume, which is hard to capture.
you're making progress psych.
you are although missing an ingredient in the beginning.
that is Action Lines, which results in a more cohesive rhythm.
Adding action lines will give your sketches life.
here are some examples.
this isn't an action line, but showing you rhythm with line direction. direction when drawing or painting the human body is never straight, either direction of the torso, or limbs.
there are no straight lines in nature.
action lines are the first and foremost mark you make on paper.
from head to toe, hand to hand with one or a couple strokes of your hand.
some draughtsman use the direction of the spine as a starting point,
and others like myself used contour lines as part of the action lines. (i.e., see above)
your strongest points right now are balance, proportion and form.
your weakness is rhythm and form in relation to perspective
i really wish i had more down time to actually paint and sketch.
my perfect scenario is if money wasn't an issue,I'd go back painting and attending workshops til the day i croke.
looking forward to your progress.
as other great artists have said, keep going!

By Kabro Go To Postyou're making progress psych.I can never seem to use the action line well. I've tried before but for some reason I can't really grasp it. I think it's because I keep thinking of it as something as structural or mechanical(?, probably not the right word)like the Loomis mannequin or standard construction lines. Whenever I attempt to use it I'm trying to have the line as a guide for the construction of the entire form instead of the flow of the gesture?

It's even more difficult for me to use the action line in a pose that isn't very expressive but maybe that's why I have a REALLY hard time drawing 'standard' or simple poses?
I can definitely identify the action line in images but it's very hard for me to use it to create an image but I'd be lying if I said I ever practiced using it enough to make a real assessment of it's usefulness(especially when so many great artists use it)
fuck
Gonna give it a go when I get home later.
By PSYCH! Go To Postthanks man.i get you. i've had similar issues in the beginning.

luckily for me, my very first figure drawing teacher taught this very same principal of action lines in relation to form and persective.
when i get some time in the next couple of days. i'll draw something up on my trusty cintiq (yeah fucking right, i only have a intuos 5)
and show you examples of how to approach your dilemma.
It's even more difficult for me to use the action line in a pose that isn't very expressive but maybe that's why I have a REALLY hard time drawing 'standard' or simple poses?
yes, action lines are easier to execute on standing poses, but they do exist even in sitting or fetus like positions.
additing action lines to minute shifts in angle shifts in torso, head, hip, and limbs will make your sketches sing.
i know its difficult as i've been doing it myself for years, i was only happy with my gesture drawings only after a couple hours of warm up.
So I've been practicing using the line of action more. idk, maybe it's because I hadn't given it enough effort or haven't been doing enough figure drawing practice but I'm think I'm starting to know what I'm doing when I use it. Applying it using a combination of contour lines as well as where the spine starts. I tried it on a few ref poses and it helped me approach the figure better. Made some of the more unusual poses a lot less intimidating. not going to post those as they were really messy and incoherent.
A few rushed gifs to show kado how I'm using it, I'd like some feed back.
Still having a bit of trouble on not falling back on using it as a construction line but for the flow of the gesture but I'm not nearly as uncomfortable using it as I was in the past.
Couple sketches from using the line of action

I started teaching myself how to draw last week. Started working through the Andrew Loomis books. An artist buddy told me to start with Fun With Pencils. Obviously I'm not advanced as you guys but I will post some stuff.
One day I hope I am not shit anymore. I told my dad (who is an artist) that I started drawing and he just said about damn time.
so this past week not sure what happened but I forgot how to draw. Feel like I completely regressed, things I thought I was getting a little more comfortable with felt more frustrating than ever, lots of scribbles and deletes so not too much to show, unfortunately. Managed to get out these sketches, seeing if I can get anywhere but feel pretty down about art right about now. Gonna use this week to try and work through it.*sigh*
Always check this thread. Keep it up man, it's always worth checking.
I may hang shit on your food taste, but i couldn't even come close to your drawing.

I've really been meaning to get back into drawing so I'm going to start following this thread. I actually did doodle something recently for an XCOM 2 character someone made of me:
i have no idea what the aliens look like
and then some old stuff:
Probably worth noting I'm more into graphic design than outright illustration, so most of the stuff I end up making comes out pretty mixed media-based.

^^Good stuff Wahrer!
I'm working on a few drawing with entire figures but they're frustrating the hell out of me. As a distraction, I touched up an old doodle I did a few months back inspored by cheetos. a little disappointed tbh
I also discovered the motion blur filter in PS and that's fun

By P-SY Go To Postblah, study
seems like pro work psy chan
crushing reality is that it's nowhere close to pro work.
another couple blah studies, been trying to really understand the face forms but idk

Lots of cool stuff in here! I haven't really done anything art related since I finished my degree, really need to get back into it.
Here's my website for my illustration work.
Got an itch to do more life/figure drawing too. Wouldn't mind getting back into that if I can find somewhere close that does it.

Who are these beautiful women? Nice job man. Some of your best yet fo sho.
thinking I'm starting to understand the forms and planes and such, no reference just doodles trying to apply stuff from studies.
