Hassan Whiteside participated in this morning's shootaround. There is a good chance he will play.
RT @RicBucher Ex-NFL GM @CharleyCasserly had Sam Hinkie as an intern. Said on @BR_Radio he'd happily hire him again, just not in a position of authority.
This entire interview with Mitch is batshit insane, this guy is nowhere close to reality and I hope for Lakers' fans sake that he was just sniffing glue before giving it:
http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/14514574/los-angeles-lakers-willing-sacrifice-youth-movement-order-celebrate-outgoing-kobe-bryant
"This [season] is really a justified farewell to perhaps the best player in franchise history. And, God willing, he's going to want to play every game and he's going to want to play a lot of minutes in every game, because that's just the way he is.
"And as long as that continues, which it should, then that's 30-35 minutes that you might give to a young player that you can't. How do you get a feel for your team going forward when you know that your best player is not going to be there next year? So it's really hard to go forward until he's no longer here.
"That's not a bad thing. I'm not saying it's a bad thing at all. It's something that I think is a good thing. In some regards, there's a silver lining. Our younger players can make mistakes and it can kind of go under the radar because Kobe garnishes so much attention. Every game, it's about Kobe. Even when he doesn't play, it's about Kobe. So in a lot of regards, there's a silver lining that our guys can develop under the radar and maybe make a mistake or make two mistakes and it not be a big deal."
"I was hoping that our young players, in conjunction with the veterans that we added, and Kobe at full health, would lead to a better record than what we have today," Kupchak said. "I didn't have any visions that we'd win 50 games or 45. Could we have won 45 or 40? I guess it's possible. In fact, it still is possible.
"But where we stand today, it looks like we're not going to meet that benchmark. So, in some regards, I'm disappointed with where we are today, but it is what it is. Kobe's made a decision. He can't play every game. He wants to play every game. We have to figure out a way when he does play to play with him, get him the minutes that he wants, get him ready for the next game, hope he plays the next game, and if he doesn't, we have to get our lineup in such a way that we can compete and develop the young players. It's not a perfect scenario, but there's no way to plan this. There just isn't."
Kupchak believes that even if the younger players' development is on hold somewhat until Bryant leaves, they still have shown enough promise to give potential free agents a sense of what the Lakers have down the road.
"I think we'll see enough [from them]," Kupchak said. "Yeah, I think we'll see enough. I do. Kobe has been really good lately. He looks like he's trying to fit in and play the right way. Yeah, I think we'll see enough. Is it going to come as quick as you want? I mean, D'Angelo is going to be 20. They all want it now, but it's just going to take a year or two or three. But it's certainly going to be a lot more attractive than what we had to offer last summer."
http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/14514574/los-angeles-lakers-willing-sacrifice-youth-movement-order-celebrate-outgoing-kobe-bryant
That's not as bad as I thought it was going to be. They're gonna ride out the Bryant retirement tour. Ticket prices all skyrocketed when he announced. I also believe that Mitch, along with other people in and out of the organization, figured a healthy Bryant the addition of Lou and Hibbert and a coalescing young core could achieve a 25-35 win season. Even if he didn't figure that, he's not going to tell you.
At the end of the day, last summer, we were trying to sell to free agents – 'Come to LA, we have plenty of cap room, we have the No. 2 draft pick, we have a player we drafted No. 7 [overall] who didn't play this year who we think is going to be a heck of a player, and we've got Kobe, who is going to turn 36,'" Kupchak said. "That was our pitch. And that's a tough pitch to a veteran free agent. A veteran free agent really needs to hear more than that, especially if he's giving up a lot of money. He needs to see more of a core than the No. 2 pick, whom he may not even know who he is, and a player that got hurt in the first game of the season, and the rest of the guys that we had on the team and Kobe who hadn't played in two years. That's a tough pitch to a free agent. It really is.
This is really the only part I take issue with and even then it's not his portrayal of last years pitch. I just don't see much difference between last year's pitch and this year's upcoming pitch. Unless something changes our rookies are still going to be giant question marks and we still have a sourpuss nobody likes as a coach.
Free agency will not be great for LA this year. Keeping our pick is even more important because of that, it'll likely be the only major addition LA makes.
If we get the #1 pick and they're actually a generational talent then things start to figure themselves out. Otherwise....

I don't think the "otherwise" is all that bad unless we only swing for the fences in FA like the last couple of years. Mitch is usually pretty good in a trade. If we could get some solid but not great vets via trade and FA to go along with out growing youth, we would still have a better pitch during future FA periods.
My largest issue, currently, is that Mitch obviously knows this. He knows our youth development is key to attracting people to play here. So why are we riding asshole Scott to his contract's end when he clearly isn't a developmental coach. They're putting our future off a little to make cash off of Bryant's retirement. Mitch saying the Lakers can't move on until Kobe's gone kinda confirms this.
Derrick Williams is posting his best ORTG ever and is right near his best DRTG ever - best since 2012.
Afflalo has his best ORTG since 2011 and his best DRTG since 2008.
Fisher can't coach. Triangle doesn't work for role players.

This statistic is also more exact than typical Player "possession based" calculations, because we calculate rather than estimate players' possessions on the court.Bball ref bases their stuff on estimates while the NBA uses calculations based on actual time spent by that player on the court. So, their numbers are more accurate?

seems like NBA definition is "Number of points per 100 possessions that the TEAM scores while that player is on the court"
And the BBall Ref one is "an estimate of points produced per 100 possessions" - They draw a distinction between Team and Player so that they're not conflating a player with the other 4 guys he's playing with.
I don't see why how much a team scores is a better indicator personally. It's about the individuals output based on his individual numbers put over a 100 possessions, not about the other 4 guys.
What the massive difference in ORTG tells me for D Will is that he's a much more effective offensive player than the other bench players he usually plays with. Which makes sense, since he's second on the entire team in FT attempts and their primary scorer off the bench when he plays a lot of minutes.
Edit: Grant has an 89 ORTG. OQuinn has a 103 ORTG. Seraphin has an 86 ORTg - it's the rest of the bench that's bringing his "team" numbers down it seems.
I really don't know what's better lol. It's good to see the difference though. I'll have a better idea of using individual vs. team numbers now though. which is good.

The Mitch interview is just smoking mirrors tbh.
It wasn't by design this was just the best team they could put together so let's spin silk from shit.
The biggest concern going forward is what semi-young player would willing decide to play for Scott

Williams is a 14 min player and isn't sucking at his role since his rookie year. But you don't really think he would be a 20 point player if he played 36 mins do you?
And the triangle makes role players better... if a role player is willing to be a 8 point guy... also Fisher can't coach

It sounded like Fisher was unhappy about him not running the offense consistently, which is weird because Fush was the one in preseason talking about when Grant is in he'll run PnR to take pressure off of him learning the Triangle. Basically Grant is a drive and dish, fastbreak guy right now; he can't hit an NBA 3 or the 15-18 ft shot with any reliability. His D isn't too bad though.

By 3SidedPolygons Go To PostDid you not attend Phaze's and Dy's meeting?
shrug
Grant's problem is that he can't even run PnR anymore consistently. Teams just go way under on the screens and it's not like he's rookie John Wall fast or anything. Consequently he just kills a shit load of possessions by dribbling around forever when he doesn't get the exact driving lane he wants off the Pick.
He's been better of late though in just running the offense and not trying to manufacture shit on his own. Just run the offense. It's simple. It creates shots for you automatically and if stuff breaks down - you've got a few guys you can pass to who can isolate and create their own shot.
There's no reason for you to try to create shit on the fly all the time.
