Japan formally apologized to Korea for WWII "comfort women"

This is a huge step in these two countries' relations. I was actually shocked that Abe apologized himself considering his comments about this topic before.
Sadly the money Japan will pay isn't going directly to the living victims but supposedly they will get support from it.
Korea can no longer make this an international incident as per their agreement.
Japan has apologised and will pay 1bn yen ($8.3m, £5.6m) - the amount South Korea asked for - to fund victims.
The issue has been the key cause for strained ties. South Korea has demanded stronger apologies and compensation.
Only 46 former "comfort women" are still alive in South Korea.

Holy cow I had no idea this was a thing, but equally I am not shocked that it was a thing. That's truly disgusting, but the money not going directly to the victims feels like a political game and nothing more.

It's basically government hush money... But the big things that did happen is Japan, as a country, finally admitted that this happened... Capped off with Abe himself saying "sorry". Abe was one of the many, "it might have happened but the numbers are overblown" type of guys.

I mean there are only 244 known victims alive, and Korea won't have to support them long and will be able to pocket the money..
