Uncle is having his leg amputated today.

It's due to diabetes + smoking. He's at the best possible hospital for this (same one that cured all the Ebola patients)
If any of you are smoking, please stop.

He's old enough that they're only twilighting him as well.
He was pretty sad about it for a while (he's known they were going to take it since about October?) but we've worked on raising his spirits between then and now. He was born in the late 40s so he grew up around people thinking once you lost a limb you were instantly an invalid.
Doctors and everyone telling him "uh, you'll actually still be able to drive and everything, just with one less leg". He finally got it.

Sorry to hear that man.
One of my uncle's is going through the same thing right now, actually. I have been never very close with him nor much in touch with him because he lives on the outskirts back in the mother country. Complications of diabetes and whatnot, too. It started with necrosis in his big toe and they gradually removed more and more of his leg. It might have been prevented had he been able to see a doctor sooner, but such is life in a borderline third world country these days.
