By reilo Go To PostI can't recall the last time a team became relevant by signing a bunch of decent roleplayers as their foundation before they landed a truly great player.Probably when Houston landed Harden.
By Kibner Go To PostProbably when Houston landed Harden.Totally missed the point. The Rockets weren't any good before Harden.
By blackace Go To Post21 mill for the next 2 years is yuck.
Phil did a great job of clearing up cap year 1 and didn't do well spending it year 2
Who's earning that? Afflalo is only at 8 million per. Williams is at 4 million per. Lopez is the only big contract on the team.
Do yourself a favor and look at the payrolls of a random NBA team and then the Knicks. Knicks have more useful guys on cheap money than almost anyone, including guys like Thomas and Galloway that they developed.
The Fish complaining is getting old. He's not a hyper elite coach and has his flaws. But this team of cast offs and role players is paying harder, more disciplined, and more effectively than anyone thought before hand.
The team resorts to iso's late in games too much, and his rotations are inconsistent (mainly because everyone this year on that team has hit serious rough patches) but as a whole the team is overachieving,
It's really simple really. Either a team overachieves, properly achieves or under-achieves. You don't incessantly bitch about a coach unless a team is MASSIVELY under achieving or slightly underachieving in a contending year.
A coach with flaws that is properly or over achieving shouldn't be fired.

Not really. The only bad contract is Calderon and Lopez. They need better talent but the players they have are properly paid.
I'd love to see a breakdown by position of certain players in the NBA of stats and their contracts. I'll check on it and post something later in the week.

Let's be honest, anyone looking at that payroll, if they got a magical do-over, they would literally get rid of everyone except for Porzingis, KOQ and Galloway. No question. Jackson added so much dead weight (Vujacic, Derrick Williams, Calderon), gave his money too liberally (Lopez, Afflalo) and traded a dollar for 50 cent overall. Melo is nowhere near as bad as Joe Johnson, but I don't feel like defending him when he's shooting 42% on fewer shots than in the past 10 years of his career (pretty sure someone would argue that he would shoot 36% were it not for the magical triangle).
And please don't hype up Lance Thomas. He can't defend. He can't pass. He can't rebound. He is Chris Copeland.
People mention Biyombo but there were plenty of better options than Lopez. Pachulia is one. Ajinça is another. Koufos is too. I would feel vindicated about the discussions we had last summer here since every Knicks fan jumped on me for criticizing the signing, but tbh, I'm too mad at the state of the roster to care that I was right.

I've always found that Christmas as an adult is way better than when I was a kid. I pretty much buy everything I want, so I'm not making extravagant lists and setting myself up for disappointment. I'm mostly just hoping others like the things I gifted them. Good times.
Now, about this Cavs and Warriors game later...

By blackace Go To Postadd Lopez and Awfulo together and you get that mess
I'll concede that Lopez is a bad fit. Afflalo is a great fit for the team and the offense and is getting paid pennies compared to guys like Carrol or Terrance Ross. And at the time everyone was talking about how great of a signing Lopez was. Porzingis is just a monster on defense and already doing a decent job on DMC and shit - it's totally unexpected, there's no way to plan for that - but it's the reality so now Lopez becomes unnecessary long term.
The issue now becomes how do you unload his contract if he's just a permanent 25 minute guy that bogs down the offense and is a poor passer from the post. For all of Gaby's problems with 4 rebounds or whatever, his real issue is that he's never capable of hitting the cutters or making decisive passes. And because he's only a threat at the post, the triangle plays through him when he's in and he takes away from the effectiveness of the offense.
When OQuinn is having a good game, you see the difference, and when Melo operates out of the post you see the difference too.
A guy like Noah or even Hibbert would be great at 25 minutes a game assuming they can unload Lopez and sign one of them for under 10 million per.
http://youtu.be/KQyyJ_ZzwYw
The reason Knicks fans were excited for OQuinn is he's got the perfect skill set to operate out of the high post. Elbow jumpers. Can hit cutters. Sets good screens. Lopez is incapable of hitting that guard (Sasha) on that give and go with any level of consistency in that way. At most he can do a handoff which isn't nearly as effective as threading the needle with the bounce pass right in front of the rim.
If Lopez could pass like this consistently his 4 or 5 rebounds a game could be overlooked.

as long as GSW has a historical good record and Curry plays better than everybody else, i doubt it.
The first round of the All-Star votes count just came out.
Curry's numbers are pretty amazing considering it almost doubles the second place!

By 3SidedPolygons Go To Postis getting paid pennies compared to guys like Carrol or Terrance Ross.Yeah, compared to two guys. Yet you advised to bench him yesterday... There were a few serviceable swingmen this last summer, Neal cost 2.5M, Thornton cost 1.1M, Lou Williams (coming out of his 6th man of the year season) got 7M, Gerald Green got 1.3M, Alonzo Gee got 1.3M, Mike Dunleavy got 4.5M, Jae Crowder got 6M, Jared Dudley got 3.6M, Jeremy Lamb will get 7M next year... Afflalo is overpaid, but what will truly decide it is how they manage this summer's cap space. If they miss out on better guards like Fournier, that will be telling.
The bigger picture is also how Jackson turned Chandler and Shumpert into Calderon and Lance Thomas, since Chandler could be off the books and Shumpert only cost 2M more than Afflalo... The silver lining is that the 17 win season (which is on the record of Jackson, and unintentionally, he recruited Calderon to go to the playoffs, don't try to deny it) brought a franchise player.

Typical case of being ultra specific in order to have people mistake your short-sightedness for being sophisticated. Also, you read like a quarter of what i write cos you have me on ignore, so don't bother quoting me again and again to make a point.

Ask DY about Lamb's season.
I didn't argue they should have picked up these guys, I just gave more flesh to what the market was. But your reading skills are about on par with your humor, so... merry christmas to you too!
Those are examples with huge 20/20 hindsight. You can't list old examples with today's perspective. No one would've liked Knicks signing Lamb, would've been clowned relentlessly. Be honest dude. Hell, your whole argument has a huge asterisk in the sense that it assumes people knew Porzingis would develop as quickly as he is.
By The Frankman Go To PostThose are examples with huge 20/20 hindsight. You can't list old examples with today's perspective. No one would've liked those moves.Lamb's contract is not a "move", it was a november extension. I'm telling you about the market, not what they should have done. Make a list of SGs. See where Afflalo ranks (like 20th imo). See if his contract reflects the fact that he's a subpar starter. Think about the flexibility for next summer. That's it, case closed.
By PSYCH! Go To PostGreen plays defense this year too and his percentages are coming up after a rough startNow the move looks ok. Back in July/August? Ehhhh...
EDIT: I'm not sure signing Gerald Green to be Carmelo's #2 would've gone well in NY is all I'm saying.
By The Frankman Go To PostNow the move looks ok. Back in July/August? Ehhhh…Yeah, I agree. He's been wildly inconsistent in his career and that's why he's been in and out of the league. I'm just glad we got him for the minimum.

Hell, your whole argument has a huge asterisk in the sense that it assumes people knew Porzingis would develop as quickly as he is.In what way is my argument conditioned by Porzingis' development? It is absolutely off-topic (I just say that in spite of Jackson hoping that Calderon would help the team, they sucked so fucking hard, which brought Porzingis). If Porzingis was still a project today, I would have the very same opinion about those contracts. Why would I not? Now Porzingis is responsible for Lopez being a bottom-of-the-barrel center?
By The Frankman Go To PostEDIT: I'm not sure signing Gerald Green to be Carmelo's #2 would've gone well in NY is all I'm saying.
Because you are/were okay with Afflalo being a #2 option? That's right, I remember you focusing on his Magic statline... He was like the 4th or 5th option on the Blazers and they were not going for the title...
Well I hope you enjoyed all the ISO bullshit we got last game (such a sophisticated offense!), that sure felt like a Pippen to a Jordan.
