When did people suddenly become obsessed with box office numbers? I feel like The Dark Knight is when I started noticing it, then Avatar, The Avengers and Jurassic World took it to another level.

Because I don't remember having a single conversation about it with my friends, if not in passing, or when trying to make a point.

Taste Wars and Validation stuff, yada yada. No one really cares.

Yeah, mainly on forums and such. See it in passing on news websites/programmes, but it seems to be becoming more and more of a talking point on discussion boards. May have even overtaken critical reception in the amount of attention paid to it.
I'm personally one of those people who's only interested in stuff like that when it's notable for flopping, rather than succeeding :P

I was wondering about this a while ago. People on gaf seem well into it. Nothing wrong with it obviously, it's interesting to know when a film has made a ridiculous amount of money, but I don't understand the fascination.
can we not compare fucking games to movies pls
I don't care how much a movie is making past a certain point, but it does matter if it flops or not. It affects the director and actors involved, unless they're Johhny -box office poison- Depp. It's hard to ignore the box office numbers when you check imdb on daily basis like me :p
it's why and how Denis Villeneuve is now handling a big movie like Blade Runner

its completely stupid since Avatar has one of the highest box office numbers but you'd be fucked if you had to quote a single line from it. Box office numbers mean nothing now that cinema is a worldwide thing with an ever growing audience instead of the US and Europe-only thing it was before.
By Yurt Go To Postcan we not compare fucking games to movies plsYeah, that's pretty much all I care about.

I think it happens any time a record is going to get broken.
Also, it's a measure of success closer in line with what the average audience enjoys, rather than what is a 'good' movie as voted for by awards.
Games flopping closes down studios too: Pandemic, Free Radical, Maxis, etc.
And games making money means you have 5 Souls sequels too. It's pretty much the same.

South Park too, I think.
By Yurt Go To Postcan we not compare fucking games to movies plsI think it matters a hell of a lot if games flop or not as well.

With publisher-owned developers, they often get to make another game after a failure, but the ramifications of failure can be huge as well. Firstly on the financial hit, then devs getting downsized or shut down, after too many of them, publishers going bust ala THQ, and franchises dying with them.
Plus you've got publishers putting studios at risk with absolutely boneheaded decisions like making Tomb Raider exclusive to Xbox One.
Yeah, that Alpha Protocol/New Vegas/Dungeon Siege period was a bit rough for them. I'm glad we got PoE
I love that Rockstar exist in their massive bubble.
Do what they want, when they want, don't have to explain their decisions to the public, don't work by the same event calendar that everyone else (aside from Nintendo I guess) does.
What a success story they have been over the last 15 years or so. Even the games that haven't sold well have a lot of fans (Manhunt, Bully, Max Payne 3)
Manhunt 2 maybe the only big budget, critical and commercial flop. Even LA Noire has a group of lunatics who think it was good. They found space in their development and funds budget for a table tennis game ffs, just as a little side-project for their engine.

I'm not saying games flopping doesn't matter, I'm not pulling a managers don't matter nonsensical point here. Of course it does, sales matter even on a falafel stand
just saying that I can live without a new game voiced by Nolan North or a new JSR.
but can you imagine a world without Pulp Fiction
which I'm sure inspired the Coen bros to create Fargo
which then led to the creation of Fargo (TV) and the casting of Mary Jane and my unrequited love with Fintan?
I don't even want to imagine
No, the Souls series has transcended the medium ok

Are there any directors/producers who have had an absolute flop, then worked their way back up through indie films and smaller films, then had another chance with a blockbuster?
By Hitch Go To PostI love that Rockstar exist in their massive bubble.

Fair, but I reckon when they make shite decisions like not releasing Red Dead Redemption on PC someone should explain that.

But blockbusters is a bit of a wide spectrum when shit like Conan or those new Hercules movies get like 90 million dollar budgets. Usually you get your Brett Ratners and Mark Webbs directors for hire to do those. They keep failing and they keep getting jobs.

1st one is still great tho, a stealth game where the plot is that a crazy warden uses his death row inmates to star in snuff films. Brilliant stuff.
Never played 2 because of the bugs and censorship.
AC might have a gubbins script but at least with Kurzel n Arkapaw shooting the thing (did Macebth/Top of the Lake/True Detective S1) gonna at least look fucking sweet and be well put together
Also Kurzel gets some right good casts together, AC no different.
I have a wee bit of faith. Hope they are using the license as loosely as possible, dunno how much input Ubi will have. If there is any hint of Abstergo good fucking grief.

If Rockstar didn't exist in their own bubble, maybe they would cut down a little on the bloat in GTA campaigns, make them you know, actually good the whole way through.
I do like them, and it's cool they don't really play by the other companies rules. But their games are often lots of wasted potential.

Ludicrously atmospheric. Especially because you don't get away with fucking up without being sent back to a save point that could have been 20 minutes ago

I don't think they had huge budgets either, but I have a hard time imagining Manhunt 2 not being a big flop financially for them.
Second had some alright ideas but was in the end, just not that good. I played the old uncensored ps2 version, that leaked from Sony, and it was just poorer all around. Quite enjoyed the first one though, at least until the point where you got guns.
