Is Viva on vacation or something?
The local cinema has a Darth Vader, a Leia and a Stormtrooper walking around the crowd. This is fucking amazing, no other franchise has this kind of power.
By Zabojnik Go To PostI should probably explain myself. TFA spoilers ahead.
I loved the beginning. I really did. The whole first third (two fifths?) of the film, actually, up until they meet Han Solo. Both Finn's and Rey's characters were set up brilliantly and they certainly cast the right people for the role. Oscar Isaac gonna Oscar Isaac, goes without saying, although I found his character to be bit thin. I guess he'll play a bigger role in the sequels. Also absolutely loved the initial locations and some of the desert shots were just gorgeous. So far so good.
Then … uhhh. Should I've read some of the extended universe novels before going in? I mean, they exlained what happened between E6 and E7 … kinda? Didn't care at all for how the First Order was introduced. Or even that it exists in the form it does. In fact, the whole derivative action-packed slide down the you've-seen-this-before slope that followed kinda took me out of the experience and the movie didn't manage to pull me back in, which really left me disappointed. Was it fun? Sure, I guess. It would've been much more fun if they had taken it in another direction. And I'm not even someone who's seen E1-6 at least a dozen times. Homages are one thing, parroting whole sequences and scenes and plotlines and evil antagonists … sorry, no. Just no.
Also, why the rush? Why start the new trilogy with such a bang. Why set up a state of the universe that feels very much like the old one, just with new faces and new names. Further more, some of the 'reveals' really bothered me. Will they explore what happened between Luke and Kylo "Ben" Ren in E8? Tell us lowly non-SW buffs what the Knights of Ren were all about? I guess. But why make sense of it in the first film of the trilogy. As far as I'm concerned, that's where JJ should've played it safe.
The more it went on, the more it felt like TFA should've been the middle part of a trilogy, which was really weird.
On the whole I'd say I enjoyed it, certainly more than Return of the Jedi, which I saw a couple of days back in preparation. So … yey?
Dunno, JJ Abrams is basically a not-bad Michael Bay.whynotboth.gif
I posted a bunch of stuff that's all been swallowed up in the two GAF megathreads on the film, but I largely agree. The pacing was my biggest issue with the film—there's basically no context for anything that's happening in the film, other than "see... just like a New Hope!" (which, even before all the nostalgia-pandering bullshit, makes no sense, since it takes place, what, thirty years after ANH). And that's on top of the fact that it basically undos the happy ending of Return of the Jedi without any particular reason or justification.
ROTJ is a flawed mess of a film, but I still think the emotional catharsis of the climax of that film is about as good as it gets in the Star Wars series. So if you're gonna immediately undo that... it'd be nice to at least understand why that happened. Otherwise, it just feels like one of those TV shows that lasted two or three too many seasons because of money and they had to keep making characters that should be happy by now unhappy because reasons. It would've made way more sense to have this film be a lot more patient and foreboding, but then JJ would've had to actually use his brain for original thought instead of just making a shot-for-shot remake of the first film.
Also... the settings and set-pieces.... whisper it... kind of underwhelming. Not-Tattooine, Not-Yavin, Not-the-Death-Star... zzzzz whatever. the best image and set-piece was the crashed Star Destroyer, it was all downhill from there. you'd think JJ would've pulled out all the stops here if only because TOYS TOYS TOYS. None of the set-pieces in this film came close to the OT space sequences, for example, and that's JJ's own damn fault for not even bothering to try.

By sam777 Go To PostHow about unofficial, I am grasping at straws now.I'd say we can be pretty confident that there has been some sort of contact with Mendes and Mourinho. Probably just a sounding out though. By what was said here and the fact we have two matches in very close proximity I reckon we won't see Van Gaal gone just yet.
Pls tho. Don't wait ages before appointing a new manager. I don't want to Giggs to be an interim boss as the longer he's in charge the greater chance there is for him to be made permanent.
Just watched Beckham on Graham Norton talking about Ferguson and the power he still has over his players. Very, very telling stuff and explains so much of what the rest of us loser clubs (including current United) are missing.

come think of it, we've only really disagreed over one thing ever
Morata
but that was quickly cancelled out by Iturbe. So the long lost twins theory still holds

Dont worry L1NETT I wont say anything.
it was shot in 70mm actually! It made no difference to me, kinda pointless too for a claustrophobic setting, no? Or maybe not, I wouldnt know.
it looked rather wide on my TV. I'll check it out again with my friends to see it in all its supposed glory next year.
I dunno, if it was another director behind the lens then I would be excited about this prospect, but not Tarantino. I like him, but he's an OK director, he's not gonna blow my mind with his lens

brah.
robbie robertson is sublime.
IB and Django were delicious.
Skrtel is pretty brass but we're fucked without him. Need Lovren back asap, and Subotic in as soon as the window opens. No pissing about over the fee and wages.
If there's a single game between the window opening and his arrival, we've fucked it.
We should recall Ilori, even if we have no intention of playing him

I've always considered Tarantino a stronger writer of characters and dialog than a traditional director. He does like those multi room overhead indoor shots though.
By Scum Go To PostOh, rvy. Viva is out on the piss up and probably shagging his way through Tokyo whilst I'm stuck in dreary London, pissing it down in late December.People in Japan wish they were in London
Ok maybe not
But appreciate what you have, Scum
Mourihnio wouldn't be the positive and confidence invoking change we need. Van Gaal was a breath of fresh air after Moyes, I would say positive in most directions coming after his worldcup outing.
Overall, Mourhinio has had even more of stinker season than Louis, with a more proven team. I have no confidence that performances would improve, nor results.
Would prefer we stick by Louis and the philospeh during 'squeaky bum time'. Go all out on a worldclass striker in window and see it through til the end of the season.

tarantino is an underrated director (or, at least people take for granted how good he is) because of how good/distinct of a writer he is. maybe not the best visual eye, but has a great feel for pacing and always gets great performances out of his actors

Agreed.
the more I think about IB the more I like it. But mostly because of Mélanie Laurent's arc, which was the most untarintino arc of them all.
N7 and I were talking about Can once and we agreed that he's the flipside/drawback of the Bayern technical all-roundedness ideal.
He's like Alaba, but instead of being brilliant at everything he's average at everything
What is Emre Can good at
What is his position
What does he want to be in life

Django is about 30 minutes too long. Fun ride with some great performances but he (Tarantino) didn't need to make an appearance. It killed the momentum up to that point.
