watching the sky news stream, sounds like authorities may be storming the theatre. at least I hope that's what those bangs were.
Gaby hope you and your loved ones are all safe.
Let's keep discussion here about what is happening and not speculation...

How far is Paris-Sud University from this? I Googled it and I'm seeing 17 miles. Is that correct?
A very close cousin of mine lives near the uni, but works and hangs out near central Paris.

Yeah, it's fairly far. 30 min train ride.

Dude, I'll be going out tomorrow, so will every Parisian... Your fear is our loss. You lose when you're afraid.
So now a refugee camp is supposedly on fire. Oh man. Run from ISIS, get blamed for ISIS. Hope that's a coincidence.

Eagles of Death Metal on facebook:
We are still currently trying to determine the safety and whereabouts of all our band and crew. Our thoughts are with all of the people involved in this tragic situation.
A colleague of mine is on lockdown. Apparently he was close to one of the blast sites. How frightening.
Any group claiming responsibility?
And i agree with giri on this one.
Please keep politics out of this.

sky news quoting a policeman as saying the theatre scene is carnage - attackers began throwing explosives as building stormed

jesus this is horrible. I know its not important now but I would like to know if this always planned for today or was it a reprisal for the battle in syria and death of jihadi john?

I doubt something like this could be organized in such little time. probably wasn't for Jihadi John. Something like this probably was planned well in advance.

We don't know. We don't know if it's Daesh or Al Qaeda. We don't know.
Not even worth speculating tbh.
My thoughts are with the people devastated by this event and the Parisian people. I'm constantly paranoid about how relatively easy it is for any one person to just go on a rampage and this is sounding like a coordinated bunch of attacks with multiple gunmen and bombers. Damn.

definitely think it was carefully planned, there was a rock concert and a football match going on today
By Xpike Go To Postdefinitely think it was carefully planned, there was a rock concert and a football match going on todayit's paris there's a rock concert everyday and football matches pretty often too.
not saying it wasn't carefully planned because it probably was.
Richard Engel on NBC mentioned that this seems more Al Qaeda in design than ISIL because it was so coordinated and strategically planned.
ISIL, up to this point, have not shown to have the capabilities to organize at this level yet, but there's always a first time.
I think it'll be a few days before we have something definitive.

ISIS has to go for obvious reasons, but why do people assume that this type of thing ends with ISIS?
These things happened before ISIS and will happen once ISIS is gone. Problem is obviously far larger than these individual groups.

By Enron Go To PostISIS has claimed responsibility; Syrian passport(s) found on attackers per CNN.
They might very well be Syrian, but worth keeping in mind is how easy it is to get a Syrian passport

Many reports by people who escaped that the assailants spoke perfect French. It is well known we've had hundreds of kids go to Syria and come back. I'm sorry if this gets political (how could it not?), but this is both a foreign and a local threat. Its causes are also in the colonial history of France, and the imperial history of the world as a whole.

It's not for me to address all of your reply as this issue is quite serious. I just hope this doesn't turn into persecution of one particular people or a war on religion and that people come together and heal. This is a tragedy that requires everyone's attention. Is it true that everything is closed in France today?

There is violent racism in France today. And it's getting worse.
No, not everything is closed. Some things are. Movie theaters are AFAIK.
This could've been worse...

of the attackers outside France’s national soccer stadium had a ticket to the game and attempted to enter the 80,000-person venue, according to a Stade de France security guard who was on duty and French police.http://www.wsj.com/articles/attacker-tried-to-enter-paris-stadium-but-was-turned-away-1447520571
The guard—who asked to be identified only by his first name, Zouheir—said the attacker was discovered wearing an explosives vest when he was frisked at the entrance to the stadium about 15 minutes into the game. France was playing an exhibition against Germany inside.

Athens (AFP) - A Syrian passport found by police at the scene of the mass shooting in a Paris concert hall belonged to an asylum seeker who registered on a Greek island in October, a Greek minister said Saturday.
"We confirm that the Syrian passport holder came through the Greek island of Leros on October 3 where he was registered under EU rules," said a statement issued by Nikos Toskas, the minister for citizen protection.
