By Esch Go To PostI respectfully disagree, or maybe i should clarify….. Their posession game wasn't intense enough. They weren't offering proper combinations of runs and passes (outside of Costa obviously). They were so concerned with maintaining hyper organized and proper spaced build up structures in their own play that they just weren't doing enough to stretch us and make us make our own mistakes. Now of course we deserve proper credit for that, as our midfield stayed extremely compact even when they tempted us closer to the middle of the pitch, and we defended very well as a unit. They wanted to monopolize possession at all costs, to minimalize mistakes / stop us from creating any opportunities i would suppose. Don't think you can really blame Pep for that either, as pretty much all his players are better than ours on the ball. And he was justified in it during the more open moments of the match where you saw Cazorla / Coq struggling massively with Thiago/Vidal/Alonso. Thats why Ozil ultimately had to be dropped back to help.
The only ones consistently breaking into our box were really Lewandowski and Costa. Their possession was very tight and thorough, but nobody was acting as a needle player from their more central attacking midfield to break any of our defenders, offer link-up options for Lewa or maybe force a pen or FK. Thats why we saw lots of them probing around our box, relying on either Muller or Costa to cross it in. The former is best when he can make disguised runs behind defenders. The latter tried, but disciplined performances from Mertesacker (and ultimately bellerin) held him off.

Arsene did the only think he basically could do to prepare for a team with formations and personnel choices that fluid, he defended deep and didn't bother to set up any presses (aside from Walcott and Boateng). Now, could we have potentially disrupted their play and set up more successful attacks? Absolutely. Cazorla could have done much much better to intercept some of the passes Alonso was spraying toward Vidal. Thiago was excellent, and caused massive problems on the right for Coquelin and Monreal. People noted Sanchez relative absence from the match, but we needed him deeper to help deal with some of these issues. If we can, we should aim to break Xabi in this next game. He's the key. They need to move the ball and make runs faster if they want to blow us out like everyone believes they should.
