The city has announced a new $250,000 fund to enable churches and community groups – with the help of police – to organize their own gun buyback events. It’s part of a renewed effort to get guns off the streets. Those who turn in a gun would receive a $100 gift card.

Hours after Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced a $250,000 gun buyback program on Monday, a downstate gun-rights advocate promised to come to Chicago to exploit it.
“We will be delighted to transact business once more with do-gooders in Chicago,” John Boch, executive director of Champaign-based Guns Save Life, said Monday.
Guns Save Life used Chicago’s 2012 gun buyback to embarrass city officials. That year, members said they turned in about 60 guns — some of them rusty and inoperable.
They received $100 MasterCard gift cards for each gun, which they used to buy ammunition for a National Rifle Association youth camp in Bloomington and bolt-action rifles to give away to campers.
Suburban Chicago gun dealers also took advantage of the no-questions-asked policy of the 2012 buyback to unload inventory worth less than $100 in exchange for the $100 cards, sources said.
At the time, city officials angrily accused Guns Save Life of abusing a program intended to take guns off the streets of Chicago and reduce violence. But Boch says the group was simply demonstrating the ineffectiveness of the program.
“Tell the mayor we need substance over symbolism,” he said Monday.
Boch is vowing to return to Chicago with another 50 or 60 guns to turn in.
“We will put that money to good use for public awareness efforts on our part,” he said. “We don’t need gun control, we need crime control.”
Gun rights activists aren't capable of convincing me they're not evil.
"We're going to prove this worth while venture can be exploited by being massive dickheads about it!"
This isn't a win, GRA's. it's another black mark.

I mean, they're not even wrong for doing it.
The poorly thought out buyback options that have been used in the past are always shit. Opposition throwing it back in their faces so soon and so directly this time around should drive the point home. There's better ways to spend that kind of money. OR, if you're determined to spend that kind of money - at least take the shit seriously.
No one is giving away a glock for 100 bucks anyways...

Yes. Yes they are. And you're buying into bullshit propaganda if you believe otherwise.
No one is giving up a rocket launcher for $100 either. But if they get a few thousand operational guns off the streets, then it was entirely worth it.
There's a difference about exploiting a government loophole to make a point. And being an absolute facetious dick about it.
Yes, the plans are flawed. Particularly without legislative reform to back them up. Sure as hell doesn't mean it's not worth doing, and if you're now just trying to purely profit from it then you're moving into "terrible human being" territory.

Yeah... The whole program is questionable and extremely poor in planning. And that this is the second(?) time they are doing this, after being exploited the first time, makes me question their intelligence.
Not defending Guns Save Life (which is a terrible title btw), here, but they aren't doing anything illegal. They are literally following the instructions of the program, which is haphazardly setup at best.
And, let's just be realistic... The types of individuals who they want guns removed from or have less access to are not the types of individuals who are going to turn in a weapon for a $100 debit card.
^yeah, there have been a bunch of places that have tried the gun buyback stuff and it never ends well
can you not do this? i'm buying into bullshit propaganda, rocket launcher hyperbole, random number out of nowhere. dude, stahp.
Its not "terrible human being" for pointing out how ridiculous a waste of money this pipe dream of an idea is. You want to combat the issue in Chicago, do it seriously. How much do you think a 1911 in decent condition sells for? Even on craigslist? If anything, this is a perfect example how some people believe that simply throwing money at a problem (and not enough at that) without anything close to a plan is supposed to fix massive, complex issues.
giribreh. They're literally giving away money to take in weapons that aren't even operational. This is a symbolic tapdance that solves no problems.

No questions asked campaigns with absolutely no vetting is never a good idea, especially when it's dealing with illegally gained weapons or other types of contraband.
Someone who legit purchased a handgun (most likely for their own protection whilst living in Chiraq) aren't going to turn it in for significantly less than what they paid for it, and folks who illegally obtained weapons may turn in a few, whilst they are sitting on several others that they will not turn in, and now they are $100-$x00 richer.
