Mourners gathered on the track that rings the Alto High School Yellowjackets' football field in Texas on Saturday. They held hands and prayed for junior Cam'ron Matthews, who died after a game under the Friday night lights the day before, marking the sixth U.S. high school football death this season.
It was not clear from local media reports what exactly happened, but CNN affiliate KLTV in Tyler, about an hour's drive from Alto, reported that the 6-foot junior told his teammates during a huddle that he felt dizzy shortly before halftime.
He then collapsed, and a helicopter transported him to a Tyler hospital, the station reported. The game against Carlisle High School of Price, Texas, was postponed.

Kenney Bui, 17, a wide receiver and defensive back for Evergreen High School near Seattle, died October 5 after suffering a traumatic brain injury during a game the previous Friday.
In a video on CNN affiliate KIRO, Bui is seen earlier in the game making a hard tackle on a running play and getting back up. He was later taken away in an ambulance after taking a hit to the head near the end of the game.
Bui died from blunt force injuries to the head, according to the King County medical examiner's office.
His father, Ngon, a janitor in Seattle's public schools, told KIRO he learned of his son's death via text message: "Your son is dead."

As a guy who played Football in HS, I would never let my kids play football. Better they try out for baseball, or soccer, or just start lifting weights.
Its a real brutal sport. I worked for my college's football program and every game some guy had a broken leg or a concussion and they did it for the "love" of the sport

American Football in its current state is a minefield for athletes. As health risks become more common knowledge I wonder what happens to its talent pool.

Accept the consequences and continue on.
By diehard Go To PostThe same thing that happens to other dangerous activities?Actually doubt it. Even cheer leading took a hit when the dangers of some of the throws became more apparent.
Accept the consequences and continue on.
The very nature of the sport belies the human body. Football will not exist as is twenty years from now.
It's basically the problem boxing ran into, magnified to a larger scale.

One of the reasons boxing is still rolling at a decent rate is international interest too, NFL doesn't have that to fall back on.

Football will still exist, but the players will increasingly come from poorer, less-educated backgrounds. Some parts of the country will decrease their participation a lot more than others.
It's seriously jarring if you watch a football game through the lens of potentially dangerous plays. They happen all the time. It's simply a violent sport.
By KingGondo Go To PostBoxing still exists, it's just a marginal sport.I actually disagree with this primarily because Football is so expensive for a lot of schools.

I can see a move towards soccer or even mma.

Don't worry, rumor has it the USA is getting a rugby world cup in 8 years (one after japan in 2019).
Y'all can just thank us now.
