say what you want about neogaf, but if someone made a post like that I'd assume an IP trace and a call to the authorities would be made so fast your head would spin

By KingGondo Go To PostWhat's worse is the encouragement and idolization of scum like Elliott Rodger or whatever his name was.I genuinely think people who egg on these shooters online should face the same consequences as any other person would if they did it by phone or in person. If that 4chan stuff is true just ugh.
They were just talking about his 4chan thread(?) on CNN.
I wonder if those people responding and encouraging him to do it will get in trouble.

You egg on a murderer through any other form of communication you get in trouble. It's high time the authorities take threats/harassment/inciting violence on the internet seriously.
Yea and fuck the idea that we can't talk about changing laws while mourning. I don't think anyone here is that dumb but I see that same post every time one of these events happens. This wound is never going to heal unless dramatic measures are taken.

But i know a lot of "online encouragement" is people assuming the poster won't go through with it, because of how many internet tough guys who "want to fight behind the gym" every day. It's hard to take a lot of it very seriously.

you'd assume incorrectly... they'd just be banned
Such a shame. But unfortunately all too routine And damn right it is appropriate to politicize this! The political process is how you change structural issues and this is most certainly a structural issue.
Anybody opposed to the idea of talking about the issue of gun violence during a tragedy like this is simply anti-Obama.
shit, as fucked up my country can be i at least can send my kid to school knowing she won't come back full of bullet holes
fix your gun laws, americanos

Depressing... don't know what else to say other than that. Kind of hate that Obama had to turn this into a grandstand for politics, but he isn't wrong.

I dunno how 4chan works but is it possible to arrest the posters who encouraged him???????
utterly horrifying

By db Go To PostI'm not really sure how one addresses gun violence without you know using a tragedy to make their point?
Well, he literally addresses that in the press conference. He literally says he already knows what the talking points amongst certain people will be, and that Obama shouldn't politicize it
"Politicize" is such a bullshit word to me. It's like if people keep electrocuting themselves on exposed wire and an individual is like "hey why don't we cover that up" and a group of people jump down their throat.
Haha, he made that point too. Like how if coal mines kept collapsing, we'd look at fixing the root cause. Or if roads/bridges were causing deaths, we'd fix it as well, but for "some reason" guns are untouchable.

Even worse, to some it isn't even a problem at all. It's the price of "freedom."
Condolences. I don't even know what more can be said. Obama is right.
I don't think i'll ever truly understand it because gun control is just thought of so differently here.

By J-Twelve Go To PostWe'll get guns under control right after we alleviate White Americans' fears of brown people. Please don't start a shit fight / crusade over one issue with another.
Very sad. I'll wait for info on how it was done and his various disturbed reasonings. Wehuntedthemammoth isn't exactly reliable, and taking 4chan seriously isn't a good idea either.
I've heard reports that he traveled from the midwest. A system that checks IDs against a database of gun owners at state borders would be a good idea if such a thing does not exist. If its true he traveled from the midwest to the northwest (but why?) then it would be hard for the local police to be notified and aware.

everything about this is disgusting, from it having become "routine" to the 4chan idiots piling up thinking it was just an attention whore (which he was, but that's another thing)
This is a shame, but will be forgotten nationally by Monday.
Why do we continue to act like we care when this happens? We've proven already that we don't and this is just the latest tragedy to reaffirm that.
No one in DC on either side of the aisle is going to risk sticking their neck out in the name of real change because they know it's a losing platform.
And it's probably a life losing platform too because someone would just shoot the person who proposes any such meaningful legislation.

Gun laws are stricter in black and brown population centers for a reason. The race issue is already intertwined.
By giririsss Go To PostPlease don't start a shit fight / crusade over one issue with another.Guns and racism in this country are forever entwined when the biggest strides for gun control came when white people saw the Black Panthers parading around with shotties.
American schools have strict gun control. They are gun free zones. Any whisper of a gun being around can get a campus shut down. It doesn't matter how white or black the area is. Black Panthers got shit to do with this school shooting.
Gun free zone
Lol. But yeah, you can't really honestly talk about gun control without mentioning the racial stuff that it's tied to.

Any examples of this? Equating WHTM with 4chan is a new one for me.
It's a idealogical blog with a particular bent and seeks out to reinforce that bent. It's going to hunt down what it seeks to show. That's not reliable.
NYT posted the same 4chan excerpt, but again, this may be sadly common for 4chan and may or may not be the shooter. Chan is a dishonest, insincere fustercluck. However, I have less concern that NYT is trying to push a view than a blogging site that proudly states so.
They are questionable info sources for different reasons.

"politicize"
I'm sorry if this comes across as insulting but that is such a stupid word to use. The political and the public's well being cannot be divorced. Public safety issues are inherently political issues. Politicizing is precisely what we need to be doing right now.

Gondo- Do you seriously not understand that a heavy political and personal bias and bent, and stories shaped to reinforce that bent make a website unreliable?

It should be pointed out that politicizing has a lot to do with pushing causes, or earning brownie points or trying to score political points. The backlash against politicizing is due to how people talk about the issue, but never accomplish or fix anything, or even get into a real discussion upon it. It's just talk that goes nowhere, sometimes only serving the individuals interests.
Getting actual action done is different than politicizing.

Even if the US tries to pass any extreme gun control law it'll get shut down quickly by politicians that want the NRA, gun-nut votes. That's politics for you.

When you link a blog called wehuntedthemammoth, that states it tracks and mocks the new misogyny, then the onus is on you to prove I should take it seriously. Heavily bent Idealogical and borderline doctrinaire personal blogs are not to be taken as reliable by default. If I am giving a PSA on this then good.
