I think UT is happy to be the big fish in a small pond for now. At least money-wise.

By Monroeski Go To PostIf you think the LHN will ultimately kill the Big XII entirely then they would have to go somewhere.Yeah, I guess that's the scenario. The only way I can see it changing is if the per-team payouts from the SEC network start to outstrip what UT gets from LHN.
What a terrible deal that was for ESPN. I'm sure they wish they could tear it up. Should've made Donald Trump their AD after DeLoss.
Details are hazy but it appears Nigel Bethel is not on the team for the Spring and it's likely he'll be transferring after the semester. He's been good for us on the field but has been nothing but trouble thus far off of it. Not too many tears being shed in the Tech fanbase at this news.
Somebody earlier on connected the dots between him not being on the team and two other players suddenly having "hand injuries," and now the leading rumors are that he had been taking issue with the new S&C staff, started a confrontation with them of some sort, and that somehow turned physical with the other players.

Damn. Isn't he the same one who punched that girl at a pickup basketball game?
In recruiting news, we added the top receiver in Texas. Very nice get along with his twin brother, who is a QB but could convert to WR as well.

By KingGondo Go To PostDamn. Isn't he the same one who punched that girl at a pickup basketball game?Yep, she was actually a member of the Tech women's basketball team. She was pretty much being overly physical the entire time, though, to the point that the grand jury not only didn't indict him, they wrote a letter to the school saying that he should be reinstated.
The problem is that, agree with what happened back then or not, he got a second chance after punching a woman but has continued to be a more or less constant character issue on and off the field for the year and a half since that incident. Not usually any huge public deals, just a lot of questionable social media posts, gets frustrated easily and causes personal fouls, etc.
Baylor DE Shawn Oakman, a top NFL prospect, is apparently being investigated for rape.
This has become a disturbing trend at that school.

Apparently the Baylor twitter account posted this tweet in the last few days that they later took down -
The linked article still exists, though.
The Council approved a proposal applicable to the Football Bowl Subdivision that would require those schools to conduct camps and clinics at their school’s facilities or at facilities regularly used for practice or competition. Additionally, FBS coaches and noncoaching staff members with responsibilities specific to football may be employed only at their school’s camps or clinics. This rule change is effective immediately.
Bullshit rule obviously intended to protect the turf of SEC schools.
There is no good reason that a school shouldn't be able to put on a camp wherever it wants.

Fucking Harbaugh pushes it to the limit and ruins it for everyone. Dumbass.
But let's be real, the NCAA ruined it. God I hope I live to see the day when the big schools give the NCAA the bird and split off on their own.

By KingGondo Go To PostBetween the Warriors, Silicon Valley and Stanford football, the level of smugness in the Bay Area has reached critical mass.Looks like their 2016 recruiting class has only 3 guys from California on it, which is 2nd place behind Texas with 6. Only other states with multiple signees are Utah, Hawaii, and Maryland with 2 each. 16 total states represented. 2015 was 13 different states and just 7 signees out of California.
I hadn't realized their recruiting was so widespread.

Somebody posted that on a Tech board and the general response was "sounds like somebody asked an Aggie to write an article pretending he's a Red Raider." He's way off on the tortilla "obsession." We throw them at football games and maybe put them on a t-shirt or coffee mug as a joke occasionally but that's really about it.
He's a lot more down on the city itself than most Tech fans are IMO. I would guess he's a pretty recent grad (if he's not still in school) because it seems like it's "cool" to make fun of Lubbock while you're there, but then a few years later when you're in Dallas or Houston commuting an hour each way and spending a fortune on a house you start to look back a lot more fondly. Even the oft-quoted song lyric "happiness is Lubbock, Texas in my rearview mirror" is from a song that is actually about how the guy thought leaving was great but later realized how nice living there was.
The "once you drop 70 on us" thing is a bit overboard as well.
The distance issue is real, though. Satellite camps being banned is going to hurt us pretty badly IMO.
::edit::
Skimming his twitter, looks like he's still a student. Nailed it.
::edit 2::
Apparently he had "Roll Tide" on his Twitter profile, and his facebook photo had a big Roll Tide on it, both up until the article was published and people started asking why this article that craps all over Tech was written by a "fan" that likes Alabama more than his own school. He's alsobeen fired from the site elected to step down from the site as a writer.

That's some good Pristine-ing.

I guess you're gonna get different points of view depending on who you ask. If you asked me to write an article about OSU fans, it would piss a lot of people off. I still root for the school and I enjoy visiting Stillwater a few times a year, but I see its faults as well.
My biggest complaint is our tribal, insular right-wing-leaning fanbase. Even the most "civilized" OSU board, Orange Power, has a political forum that wouldn't look terribly out of place on Free Republic or Stormfront. We're not that different from Tech honestly, except for the fact that we're closer to civilization and we have Boone. A large contingent of the fanbase is in favor of hiring beloved alums like Gottlieb, we're the little brother in our own state, etc.
It's the kind of place where you can get a great education but you have to be willing to put forth the effort to find the right profs and experiences. I think that this causes us to yearn for the "glory days" instead of asking what is possible to achieve at our school.

Hmm...
So our coaching staff had a consultant on staff last year that worked with Jake Browning a bunch. That consultant was Bush Hamdan, who is now our WR coach after Brent Pease's contract expired and was not renewed at the end of last season.
Enter this season, where all of our assistants got extensions...except OC Johnathan Smith. That, plus word on the street saying that Jeff Tedford may be coming on as a consultant. The same Jeff Tedford who coached with Chris Petersen at Oregon and with LB coach Bob Gregory at Cal.
Edit: Also, fuck Baylor.

Food for thought - Oakman was suspended for a game early this past season. Knowing the kinds of things they have been sweeping under the rug, what could he have done to get that suspension?
Yeah, it's the most basic requirement of a coach or administrator to ensure that their students aren't being raped or raping other people.
Starr and Briles should both go. But as long as Briles continues to rack up 10-win seasons nobody there will care and the mob mentality will prevail.

Btw, what are your thoughts on the rumors of Big 12 expansion? Sounds like it could happen.
Cincy is probably the best option, but every other choice is a huge compromise. Memphis is probably my pick to get back to 12. Good basketball and potential in football.
I think BYU is probably the best choice for both a competitive program and expanded media footprint. And my unpopular pick for the 12th would be UCF, they're a huge school that has pretty big long term potential if they make the right hires in football. They'd be worth it just for the potential recruiting territory alone, plus the media market is bigger than the other options.
Cincy would be a good regional partner for WVU, and they open up some Ohio territory so I think they'd be a good option as well.
Just don't get Houston pls

100% agree about Houston.
Then again, considering that the conference has fucked up at about every juncture possible since realignment began it wouldn't surprise me.

Our recruiting class is really coming together. Currently ranked #14 nationally, and just picked up a commitment from a stud Canadian RB who had a Bama offer among others.
Just need to have a good year on the field to keep the momentum going and the future looks bright.

Apparently the Big 12 has been in contact with officials from UCF, Colorado State, Memphis and Houston regarding expansion.
Memphis and Cincy have been my favorite options. No thanks to Houston. They would really hurt the mid-tier schools' recruiting.

I'm all for adding BYU. Considering our options I'm not against going to 14 teams: Cincy, Memphis, UCF and BYU would be my pick.
I have a sick feeling that Houston will get a bid though.
I have a sick feeling that Houston will get a bid though.
I just don't see any way Houston gets the bid, I think a meeting with them was probably just due diligence. You need approval from 10 of the 12 teams to join and I just can't really imagine any of the 6 Texas and Oklahoma schools voting for them, much less 4 of the 6 plus all of KU, KSU, ISU, and WVU.
The conference isn't as desperate now as it was when TCU managed to get in.

Cincy and Memphis would be a nice start. If we could poach Pitt that would be ideal but I'd assume the ACC's grant of rights would prevent that.
If only we could go back a few years and add WVU, Louisville, Cincy, and Pitt.
I'm refusing to rule Houston out because the Big 12 has fucked up at nearly every juncture during realignment.
