edit: You know what? I mentally wrote "suspensions and worse" when I actually wrote just "suspensions"in the first post, so the misunderstanding falls on me.
Point is same that it's sadly unexceptional.
I have a problem with the whole counter narrative.
If the school thought it was a bomb, then they should have done some kind of evacuation drill. They obviously knew it wasn't a bomb.
So the only reason to arrest the kid is what? Because he was doing a "bomb scare"? Last time I check, bringing a clock to school AND claiming it to be a clock isn't a bomb scare or hoax or whatever.
And the whole conspiracy theory about it been preplanned is too much.

It's really unfortunate that the precedent does exist, but it shouldn't exist. I think that's the whole point. The outrage isn't just that it happened once, the outrage is that it keeps happening as well.

By werks Go To PostI have a problem with the whole counter narrative. You can't yell "bomb" in a public setting as a hoax. That's a federal crime. By all accounts (including the police's!) the only ones that ever used the word "bomb" were the adults, who should've known better.

And I don't think the school over reacted by reporting it. Nor the police for getting involved / confiscating the device. But from there the whole thing gets stupid. Particularly the interrogation stories.

After seeing what the clock looked like I would've called the cops too lmao
was it handled badly? absolutely. after seeing that though... i understand where it all started

Did the cops need to handcuff him though? There's so many paths where shit went "bad" and got REALLY WORSE. Call the cops to verify if it's a bomb, but they went nearly Zero Dark Thirty on the kid. I think if they don't handcuff the kid, even if they call the cops, this is a non-story imo.

I'm not drawing a line, just explaining hiw they could have handled it better. By non-story I literally mean it doesn't make it into the media.

Maybe.
But it wasn't found on a doorstep. It was brought into engineering class. The alarm beeping doesn't spook the teacher if the kid's name is Dylan Roof though.
That is actually a pen case and it has a power cord coming out of it. I mean look at that photo, the police deliberately took a zoomed in photo with no size comparison and smacked a menacing Instagram filter on it. Not to mention where is the explosive? Since nobody called a bomb squad nor evacuate a single room in the school it seems nobody thought it was a bomb.
By J-Twelve Go To PostMaybe.ahh i thought he got held up coming into the school.

They arrested him after he said it was a clock and kept asking "what it really was for" eventhough they already knew it was a clock.
The cops reaction was absolute nonsense -- also read a quote earlier where a cop basically said something along the lines of 'that's what I thought he'd look like' but I don't know if that was actually said or not.
If true, pretty disgusting.

It literally just looks like a PCB with some components on here. Just because it has a few jumper wires doesn't suddenly make the thing a potential bomb.

Best part is the teacher knew how other people would react to it at a glance and initially suggested that he not show it to anyone else, but the beeping alarm was just SO scary he had to say SOMETHING.

By reilo Go To PostThe teacher was also an EE, and well, yeah.Thought it was the English teacher who reported it.
I just finished watching last Friday's Bill Maher where Mark Cuban was a guest. Since this happened in his backyard, Cuban states he spoke with the kid over the phone to get his side of the story and also discussed the incident with staff in the schools district. He claims that Ahmed was being feed answers from his sister when responding to questions giving his account of the events of that day.
Ahmed brought the clock to first period to show it off to his tech teacher. He then continued to take it from class to class the entire school day without engaging or explaining that the contents of the box were in fact a digital clock. This went on until sixth period English where he was questioned by the teacher who then reported Ahmed and his pencil case to the main office after Ahmed remained coy on the contents of the box.
Apparently it wasn't until the cops arrived that he was forthcoming about it being a digital clock. His tech teacher is the only person on the schools staff who is reported to have been told and fully explained what it was he was carrying around all day.
Here's the segment from the show.
If what Cuban is saying is accurate, then I don't blame them (after seeing the photo) for calling the cops. It's at that point where everything went down hill, and unsurprisingly, the police made matters worse--not better.
It's telling that no bomb squad was called in and no one was evacuated from the building. However, I agree with Maher that if Ahmed was in fact staying quiet until the cops arrival, then the events up to that point were justified. The cuffs and the hulling away to jail shit is obviously gross, and for lack of a better word, overkill. But that thing looks like it could be a bomb to my eyes, and it certainly doesn't help matters that this kids name is pretty much the most stereotypical shit in the history of the bomb game.
That's not fair to the kid but when you're dealing with a police force where everyone is looking to be crowned the hero, and the community has already been attacked, overreactions like this are going to happen. That doesn't make it right but it does put things into perspective, at least for me.
Anyway, the 6:00 minute mark of the above clip sums up my feelings on the situation. I don't think we know the whole story and I do believe this is something where people are quick to take sides.

is there a source about "the other side of the story" that isn't mark cuban, zionist bill maher or right wing news sites

I don't know. And I don't know why Cuban would lie about his discussions with Ahmed or the schools staffers. He is a piece of shit, but slandering a hometown kid doesn't seem like his MO.
However, it's also why I agree and think Matthews takes the right approach by saying that we don't know what happened, but we do know that the adults failed and his treatment once the police got involved was fucked up.

cuban publicly admitted last year that he carries bigoted views but tried to handwave them under some "nobody's perfect" bs so yeah, i'll take his opinion on this matter with a grain of salt. and since the point of the story was how he was arrested and interrogated without his parents present this shit about ahmed being an obstinate weirdo prior to his arrest misses the point and is really kind of just stupid.

I was only pointing out that his name did him no favors with the idiots in his community. But you knew that.
The reason I can tolerate Cuban is because he knows that he's what he is. He doesn't beat around the bush regarding it... and yeah, it isn't like him to slander kids for no reason.
that's your prerogative dy but just cause a bigot sez he's a bigot doesn't make him not shit in my eyes and cuban's story is literally "i heard from someone who heard something"
