I know they don't have to accept lower wages etc but the pressure from the club is there, especially when you're told you'll be blackballed in to the reserves if you don't agree to move.

It is though, De Gea was just the exception that proved the rule. Usually you get a player much cheaper if he has 1 year left than 3 years. And I don't believe that players have no say over where they go, there have been several who have handed in transfer requests in PL or like in Milan who have just not wanted to move on and the club did nothing. However they do have a lot of people influencing them, from agents to clubs to fans.
But I'm not saying the transfer system is perfect, I'm just saying it doesn't need an overhaul.

So say transfer fees are abolished. How is it going to stop the richest clubs from just paying monster wages for the best players? I don't understand the focus on transfer fees in that regard. Yes it does stop many players from being able to move clubs when they want to, but how will dissolving the transfer fee help balance the quality of players available to teams?

Mm. Too much focus on transfer fees when wages spent is most indicative of a squad's strength. Not much difference in the fees for Rodwell and Schweinsteiger, say. Wages will - presumably - be rather different.
