By L1NETT Go To PostLook at the things Corbyn has supported since he was a viewdd as an even more dangerous radical; LGBT rights, Iraq, peace negotiations, nuclear disarmament. Was he wrong to go against his party? Party whips and party lines are part of the reason levels of trust are so low.
Also that McDonnell is a chum with the IRA is another press lie gullible people have swallowed. He's said some things that out of context seem alarming but when he puts it in context https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGDla6aSwng (4.00ish mins here) it makes more sense. I can understand if people find it weird and distasteful though
As for Corbyn being a just victim of smearing;
but don't wanna turn this into a politics thread, apologies.
Especially when english football is providing so many giggles worldwide.

By Dissonance Go To PostYou're right. No, see, this sleight of term doesn't eradicate the enormous conjunction of events, actions, and circumstances that gave rise to the present. The "free-market" system didn't just pop into existence yesterday with some wage-labor relations and free trade agreements. The wealth of nations has a nasty past - maybe you don't know about it, so I'll give you a new term to employ: "primitive accumulation." Off to Google (or, better yet, a library). Have fun.
Upon reflection I probably should have used the term "free market economy" instead of capitalism. My mistake
By cremino Go To PostndPerhaps I'm forgetful. Did I mention socialism?
This can be applied for socialism too….Most successfull countries are those with a mixed economy
The next gen election could really be Tories and the traditional news outlets vs Corbyn and the left wing social media.
Could be interesting. Bernie Sanders support in the US is similar.

By LarchmontVanDyke Go To PostWhat books do you recommend about the topic of capitalism, flabber? Any book recommendations generally?Though I'm not flabber, I'm occasionally an economics student so I might have a few suggestions. Ha-Joon Chang's '23 Things They Don't Tell You About Capitalism' is a good debunking of many myths about modern capitalism and his book 'Economics: A User's Guide' is a comprehensive introduction to economics. Both are geared towards the mainstream, easy to read, not wonkish. If you want something radical (well, Marxist) and wonkish, I bought David Harvey's Seventeen Contradictions of Capital. You might have seen this video from him. It's a convincing read I think, but I imagine a lot of people wouldn't like it.

By Punished Go To PostHey, if you can suggest a good book, then I'm all ears. For non-fiction, I recommend Robert A. Caro's biography of Robert Moses called The Power Broker. Going to read his 4 volume LBJ biography soon too. Really good examination of the man almost singularly responsible for the shape and state of New York City, how he wielded and accumulated power, corruption, political dealings, press manipulation etc. Incredibly thorough and detailed book, over 1000 pages but well worth reading if you're interested in the subject.
Nothing To Envy by Barbara Demick is a really good book about North Korea. Tells the history of North Korea through real life stories.

I bought the first TP of Mark Waid's run of Daredevil the other day. I've never read either Waid or Daredevil before, but the show was really enjoyable I thought.
By Hitch Go To PostLazio losing their playoff could save our arse in terms of coefficient, no?As far as I know, you get the same amount of coefficient points for wins in the EL as in the CL. So I don't think it matters, they can still help Italy's coefficient in Europa.
By Punished Go To PostI'll try and check out Nothing to Envy soon. Had a few skims of the Caro LBJ stuff but it's a serious commitment, could e reading those for months at a time haha!Yeah, it was fun. Waid's run is a lot lighter in tone than Daredevil has been for the past few decades. More of a return to swashbuckling Stan Lee era. For the more modern, "gritty" Daredevil, maybe closer to the style of the show, Frank Miller and Brian Bendis (followed by Brubaker) runs are worth checking out.

Manhattan Projects and Chew are the two best non-superhero comics going right now.
Oh, thought you got less points for EL than CL
So did West Ham get us any, or do results only count when the qualifying rounds have finished and the proper competition begun?
So if I understand correctly, City fucked the entire country yesterday with their complete inability to perform in Europe when they're actually expected to do something

By LarchmontVanDyke Go To PostWhat books do you recommend about the topic of capitalism, flabber? Any book recommendations generally? It honestly depends on how intensively you want to delve into the subject. If you have all the time to read, and you're seriously interested, I'd say work your way through all three volumes of Das Kapital, all three volumes of Braudel's Civilization and Capitalism, and all four volumes of Wallerstein's The Modern World-System. Other apt books to add would be Polanyi's The Great Transformation, Williams's Capitalism and Slavery, Thornton's Africa and Africans in the Making of the Atlantic World, Wolf's Europe and the People without History, Abu-Lughod's Before European Hegemony, Crosby's Ecological Imperialism, and so many other worthwhile books, but all of this will already take maybe a few days to read.
If you're looking more for introductory texts, I've heard good things about, but haven't read, the books mentioned by Punished. The other books I've read by Harvey and Chang have been good, so I'd trust them.

Finished watching our match.
Loftus-Cheek was pretty good in the midfield with Cesc. And he was actually pretty decent moving forward with the ball when asked.
Tel Aviv were poor, but so was Costa practically the entire time he was on. His goal was lovely, and I'm happy for him and hope he'll keep it up. But the rest of his game was off and he was terrible time and time again.
Baba and Hazard looked great together down the left.
I hope this is the start of Baba at LB and Azpili on the right. Ivanovic's future should be backing up as a CB until his contract runs out. That's it. Zouma and Cahill did well enough and I'm sure Terry will be back on Saturday, but Ivanovic's reign as a starter needs to end and end now.
