Pretty sure a lot of basketball players were two sport players.. like Nate Robinson... And being able to take a hit doesn't make you a great athlete..
lol. this conversation pops up every time during the World Cup. We'd be a good team if our best athletes are playing.
We still wouldn't compete with the best in the world without completely overhauling how we train our young players at the grass roots level.

The weirest thing about the world cup so far has been Alexi Lalas's continued bitterness about the US actually trying to play modern soccer.

Did you see his nose? Lebron would have been on the sidelines crying about his nose and cramps after 60 mins.

That would suck because soccer sucks.

they would be way too tall for Soccer.
the tallest team at the World Cup is 6 feet on average (Germany). Only 1 guy out of the 736 players is over 6.6
You know who they said was "too tall for soccer"?Imagine what Americans could do if we actually gave a damn and all our best athletes weren't playing basketball!

Hakeem played soccer when he was a kid.
So did Nash.

I would love to watch YNB booting shots on goal from midfield all game.

Nash is 6 ft 3 in (and Canadian)
No doubt the USA would have an amazing squad if they took it more seriously but i highly doubt many (if any) of the current top NBA players could make that team.

I'm talking about tall basketball players who used to play soccer and used Nash and Hakeem as examples. Hakeem wouldn't become an American either if he sticked with soccer.
And If there's one thing that basketball don't lack, it's undersized guards who are extremely athletic.
The point is that if soccer was more popular and profitable in the US then a lot of elite athletes would pick soccer as their primary sport to develop. Whether they can become world class soccer players is irrelevant, what's important is that it would take talents away from basketball, which is something I hope would never happen.
Belgium giving Algeria the pipe. Fucking scrub team Algeria is. Just a bunch of actors on the pitch.
This Kevin De Bruyne guy for Belgium is legit. Haven't watched Chelsea play in a while. When did they pick him up?

chelsea ditched that dude in January. he plays in Germany now.
they still have Hazard though. he's the star.

The best player in the world is a midget who just happens to have stubby legs that lets him control the ball better than anyone else.
The speed helps too, but let's not pretend Messi is some freak of nature athlete.

thank god for hgh or he'd be even shorter.

fair enough.

I'm a midget with stubby legs :(
Basketball players would make fantastic goalies.
At some point the height is going to affect how quickly you can cover ground shots.
Courtois at 6'6" is probably the tallest you can go.
I'm a midget with stubby legs :(
Congrats! You're a third of the way to Lionel Messi.
I'm not sure if all those saves that Mexican dude made were awesome, or if it was just Brazil kicking him in the face with the ball a bunch of times.

Don't forget us when you're on an ad with Jabari Parker.
If soccer were popular in the states, NBA players outside of short guards would only be able to play as goalie.
The NFL on the other hand has plenty of world class athletes that could play soccer if they were groomed and trained for it young enough.

Baseball. Arjen Robben would've made a killer short stop. If he could hit.
gotDAYUM @ that Australian equalizer a minute after the Netherlands put themselves on the board.
What a beautiful strike.

Wow two yellows in two games for Cahill. He's missing the match against Spain. Probably doesn't matter though.

And? If the kinds of ridiculous freak athletes who are currently making bajillions of dollars playing defensive end in the NFL were suddenly all shifted to soccer you don't think the rest of the world would have trouble? Guy's who are 6'5", 235 and have inhuman explosiveness, imagine if we had several of them on the field with a lifetime of soccer training instead of football training. Or other freaks of nature like Kaepernick, Rob Gronkowski etc.
And even if we throw out all the ridiculous "big" guys, imagine players with the kind of field vision and creativity of Russell Wilson, or Johnny Manziel playing soccer. If either of those dudes were European they'd probably be big time soccer stars, instead they are "under sized" quarterbacks.
"Explosiveness" means nothing if you don't have the agility and dexterity to handle the ball and work your way around the pitch.Imagine what Americans could do if we actually gave a damn and all our best athletes weren't playing basketball!

About the only positions with guys who are taller than 6'1" or 6'2" are center-backs and the occasional forward, although their effectiveness is often limited to headers.
this cat on Chile really got a Jordan tattooNothing classier than a neck tattoo of a corporate logo.
edit: and he just scored.
VAMOS CHILE!
I'm never going to hear the end of this. I bet my cousins are just waiting for this game to be over so they can text me.

Well the ridiculously big guys typically don't do very well in soccer because it's really really hard to lug 235 pounds around the pitch for 90 minutes.
And sure, Wilson or Manziel would be great soccer players capable of playing in Europe based on their athleticism alone. But American sports have always rewarded guys who were bigger, stronger, faster from youth level and up. Transcendant players like Xavi or Iniesta would've never made it if they played in the States because they would've been disregarded as "too small", "too slow" and never gotten a chance. We need to rethink how we approach soccer before we make blanket statments like, "Lebron would've DOMINATED soccer"
