especially in this dead period waiting for the Finals
THIS is the way it's supposed to be! Duncan and LeBron in the finals--vahagn arguing for Kobe supremacy!
All we need is for me to reclaim my captainship, ask everyone to list their top 5 all time NBA players, offer the worst trolling known to man, and talk about Nintendo.
All we need is for me to reclaim my captainship, ask everyone to list their top 5 all time NBA players, offer the worst trolling known to man, and talk about Nintendo.Yea, that's not gonna happen.
Yo damn, I didn't realize LA/Kobe fans felt some type of way about Duncan possibly getting another ring. Theres these RANDOM out of NOWHERE Kobe discussions going on on like 3 of the sports boards I visit.

Smarts > thugs, which is why Nash > Kobe.
Did Kobe ever win back to back MVP?
Didn't think so.
And videogames are for nerds.
Either this will be blowouts, or each game being down to the wire IMO
Watching that last years series, its crazy how in G6 and G7 you can just watch the Spurs team deflate as they keep matching Miamis extreme scoring and defense only to have Miami go back up again.
Every fucking time the Spurs responded near immediately, like robots with 3 point plays or the like, and they STILL couldn't win the series. The consistency just wore them down to a nub. That was fairly extreme, I'm not sure both teams play at that heightened level again this year.

Kobe is basically dealing with Duncan/Lebron's ascent up the ladder right now. That's literally the only thing that matters. Like Jordan first with Kobe and now with Lebron.
Add to that the fact like SA was the other dominant team during *our* decade, they're our only real rivals.
This Finals is ALL bad for LA Fans, Last year I was going for Lebron/Heat cuz I wasn't threatened by his 1 chip having ass. This year though? Toss up, whatever, it's a nightmare...
I'm still going to appreciate watching that beautiful basketball though. Watching the Spurs execute their offense is the only thing I enjoyed watching all year.
On the real though? Miami about to get DAT PIPE
Picking a team to root for in the finals based on how it might affect your ability to argue for the all time ranking of player you like is a special kind of crazy.
Kobe fans are a peculiar bunch.

I guess I just really don't see why anyone would bother. Kobes legacy is cemented. He has a 3 peat and another back to back. Even if he never does anything of note again the man is going down as one of the greatest ever.
The lakers as an organizations legacy is also cemented. It was cemented before Kobe even got there... cmon. What in the hell do Lakers fans have to worry about at all? Who cares, you are already on the mountain top and no one can take that away.

Can't be that much more crazy than the other reasons people come up with in match-ups not involving their favored teams.
The whole built vs bought thing was always so dumb. Who gives a fuck how it's done as long as it is done
Take that, take that.
I love it. At the same time, my wife and I were separated during the NBA finals last year. I counted on the Spurs to lift me up out of my despair and Ray Allen killed all hope. My marriage survived but I am Not sure if my sports affinity for basketball can take another loss at the hands of a team that I despise.

Cause some ways of getting it done are expressly prohibited.
Seriously though, Pop is going to need to pull out the holy grail of playbooks to really stop the Heat and win this championship. I want the Spurs to win so badly, but the Heat are that team that thrives off of haters...and Lord knows there's a lot of that out there.

I mean shit, even if your deciding factor when picking a team in the finals is a nebulous concept like 'legacy', these finals matter oh so very little.
Kobe's legacy is pretty much given at this point, he's a first ballot hall of famer and he's not getting GOAT or all time first team, those things are pretty much set in stone no matter what.
So at most we're dealing with moving him up or down one place in same random bleacher report clickbait ranking article (and even there, I think this finals are not going to matter for most people who are busy doing these pointless lists).
This is just so that next time Kobe fans bring him into conversation a month after he went fishing, they'll have another arrow in their quiver of tediousness.

You're literally arguing that 80's Laker fans shouldn't root against the Celtics to win if the Lakers aren't in the Finals. As if Rivalries forged over years don't matter, legacies don't matter etc.
SA is LA's ONLY WC RIVAL in the past 15 years. They're the only ones worth a damn, so rooting against them isn't some weird nebulous thing, it's the same as any other decade long rivalry. Kobe and Duncan are the two players in the conversation for player of their generation. If LA was in the Finals, the majority of Spurs fans would be rooting against them.
This is just what happens when you're dealing with that upper upper echelon. And acting like Laker Fans are the only ones to think this way simply untrue. FFS Lebron has a screensaver of him against Jordan because he realizes that's all he's playing for. Climbing up the ladder, passing Jordan. He doesn't give a shit about John Wall or Melo or any other current NBA Player with the exception of Durant because he knows Durant is coming after his throne like Lebron was coming after Kobe's 5 years ago.
If you're not a fan of Lakers, Celtics, Spurs, or Heat this last 15 years, legacy won't mean much to you. If you are, and your team's out of the playoffs, it's definitely a factor in which teams you root for.
lol
if that were the case, every losing fanbase (the majority of the league), would be rooting for the pacers

most fanbases did. They hated the HEAT. I don't hate the HEAT. I didn't respect them before they won, I respect the hell out of them now. Just like I respect SA.
Most fanbases root against LA or the Heat out of spite. Not over a real true forged rivalry. Some nebulous nonsense about "glitz and glamor" or some such shit. If anything, my reason for supporting or opposing the Heat or Spurs is better than that nonsense most fanbases spew out.
actually nolol

Montage of the season long narrative about the Pacers and how they would knock the Heat out of the Playoffs

And just to assuage my thought that perhaps the entire country had pulled the stick out of its ass and gotten over the hate:
Nope, they still mad. Bandwagon haters outnumber the bandwagon fans several times over.

It could be that the Spurs are a great team, have HCA and actually are considered favorites by many due to their depth/best players play at position Heat are weak against.
...
but nah let's chalk it up to bandwagon hate.

I live in Dallas and they're still really hated, I'm basically a closet fan and I usually just say "I just like watching the NBA!" if I'm not feeling like it's a good idea to leak it. Some people take that shit hard mang

Yea, Heat Hate is still pretty damn prevalent. It's not going to just die down if you win a couple chips, LA's been dealing with it forever.
Sidenote, I just got an email confirming I'm coaching junior level basketball. Mainly 13-14 year olds in a summer league tournament at a community center out here. One of my clients runs it and asked me to come in and coach one of the teams so I said yea.
Should be pretty fun.

If you are going for 3 straight titles and only 57% of people are rooting against you, you arent that hated.

Novel concept that- the idea that fans in the city of the opposing team might not be that fond of the Heat.
