Coontown was fast approaching the usercount of Stormfront. Reddit finally banned it.
Coontown was fast approaching the usercount of Stormfront. Reddit finally banned it.
Today we are releasing an update to our Content Policy. Our goal was to consolidate the various rules and policies that have accumulated over the years into a single set of guidelines we can point to.
Thank you to all of you who provided feedback throughout this process. Your thoughts and opinions were invaluable. This is not the last time our policies will change, of course. They will continue to evolve along with Reddit itself.
Our policies are not changing dramatically from what we have had in the past. One new concept is Quarantining a community, which entails applying a set of restrictions to a community so its content will only be viewable to those who explicitly opt in. We will Quarantine communities whose content would be considered extremely offensive to the average redditor.
Today, in addition to applying Quarantines, we are banning a handful of communities that exist solely to annoy other redditors, prevent us from improving Reddit, and generally make Reddit worse for everyone else. Our most important policy over the last ten years has been to allow just about anything so long as it does not prevent others from enjoying Reddit for what it is: the best place online to have truly authentic conversations.
I believe these policies strike the right balance.
Quarantining communities isn't new? They released this a couple weeks ago I thought. It seems like the only thing new is a purging that has nothing to do with any set rule.
Reddit is weird.
EDIT ... never mind it's gone...
EDIT: lol ... those comments. Reddit is too afraid to set real guidelines and are walking a tight rope between limiting content and not. No consistency.

I don't even use reddit beyond /r/thick, /r/curvy, /r/booty and /r/bigasses. I mostly find the site to be an unreadable mess. So I don't really have much skin the in the game. I just find the odd maneuvers they're pulling, interesting to watch.
One post immediately bitching about r/shitredditsays and /r/AgainstMensRights not getting banned. As if those are bigoted subs. This whole thing is a giant cluster fuck and it's wild to watch go down while they try to monetize.

Reddit wants it both ways. They want to be some kind of reputable business while serving some of the worst kinds of patrons.
SRS exists solely to annoy and bug other reddit forums and users. If reddit's reasoning is solid, they'd be looking into banning that subreddit as well.
However, their reasoning is likely goobegobble PR to explain a move made to appease people. However, it may just make those coontown users spill over into other reddits and cause more work for unpaid mods.

SRS just makes fun of other subreddits. In no way in our current laws of physics, time, and algebra does making fun of other posts on the same website act as the equivalent of a subreddit that claimed black people have no humanity. Good lord.

Look man, we can't just outright ban these hateful and disgusting subreddits, no matter how vile they are. It's a slippery slope that will lead to those subreddits then becoming even more racist and vile and disgusting and mods having to clean up after them. We just gotta accept them for who they are.
Or something.
Or something.
This is reddit's explanation:
That is what SRS does. They have harassed people to extreme degrees. They are basically a forum that stalks other reddit users. The whole point of the forum is the above explanation. I could argue that their view of those they mock relies on dehumanizing the target in the first place.

I do agree that this general purge without addressing the main issue of hate speech is a cyclical problem. The users will just flood other subs and then those will become problems. How many purges will they have to go through? Why not just make a fucking rule like, "we won't tolerate hate speech" and be done with it. Fuck their libertarian ideals and fuck the libertarians who support such nonsense. Private corporations regulating speech is not the same as a State doing it. People can still spout hate speech through other avenues. Their wishy washy rules are transparent IMO.

Leave it to etio to worry about the sub that basically outs pedophiles, rapists, homophobes and racists.

SRS falls under what Reddit admin described. It's not about racism vs general hatred employed by SRS.
The issue, that shouldn't be hard to understand, is that SRS falls directly under the description that Reddit gave. If policies are not equally enforced then it's all a bunch of horseshit.

I honestly don't even know why you'd
a) compare SRS to coontown, fat people hate, transphobic/homophobic or various women hating subs
and
b) expect consistency from reddit
The place only gives a shit about those subs now since they're a complete embarrassment to any bigger investment opportunities.

You're either dense, proud and tripping over yourselves, or trolling.
Reddit set that standard. Not me. That standard applies to SRS. If you want to argue that SRS does not fall under that standard, then you need to argue that. Saying "but they're not racists" is irrelevant. The standard isn't "because they're racist".

While I don't agree that SRS is some terrible sub, he's generally right for reasons I detailed in my previous post. Their guidelines for being banned are vague as shit. And their enforcement will be spotty.
They want them to be vague as shit so they can keep up controversial subs for the popularity and hits then close the fucking things when they become embarrassing or don't keep their shit in the sub itself.
I think it's pretty obvious what's going on. I don't know why anyone is confused. Reddit doesn't give a fuck about decency or free speech, just capitalizing on bullshit.

SRS paints targets on people and their users go to brigade or harass them. That's basically that subreddit's deal. It's not a retweet button. That's a naive point of view.
Perhaps folks are unfamiliar with what SRS does or maybe they don't care because of SRS's targets. Either way, if you understand the nature of hate then you understand SRS is an issue, and that is easily falls under Reddit's description.
If reddit's description is horseshit then it's horseshit. That was what I stated, after all.
The moment you go away from "everything is allowed" to "only certain acceptable behavior is allowed" you will run into issues of defining what is, and isn't, part of your company "culture". And speaking from experience (dealing with it on here, hello), you will never be able to write an ironclad ToS that hits every point and produces a clear black and white picture of what is, and isn't acceptable. That ToS, will also change as different scenarios get thought through and things get reevaluated. Life is not static, and neither are policies.
To bitch and moan and then point out some sort of "unfairness", as in etio's stance that SRS should be banned, too, based on some literal, black and white interpretation of Reddit's policy is complete and utterly naive. It's naive because it misses the spirit and intentions of the policy, and it's naive because it's trying to bring up some sort of righteousness to the debate that doesn't warrant it.
If you're really going to get angry or miffed or even mildly annoyed that reddit is deciding to keep /r/srs around but not /r/coontown, then you are participating in an ignorance of maleficence that benefits only the privileged class.

I thought the numbers in these subs for clicks were actually pretty minor to reddit overall. In addition the quarantining of vile subs means no adds will be placed in those subs. So they're not really a revenue generating venture. I believe it when they say they're trying to stick to their libertarian ideals of free speech no matter what. There's just so many libertarians on that site. So they're trying to walk a thing line without causing a shit storm.

It's no more shaky than reddit itself. Which was my point.

Also, Fenderputty, you're missing etio's argument. He's not saying "reddit isn't going far enough", he's arguing that they are going too far. If his argument was that they need to start shutting down those other subreddits (because they should), then nobody would have any complaints.
But clearly, bitching about SRS reeks of willful ignorance.
But clearly, bitching about SRS reeks of willful ignorance.
I have argued that if they followed their logic then certain other subreddits would be banned. I listed one. Fender listed a bunch. If they don't ban those subreddits then the reason is horseshit and they're just making it up as they go.
That was the only argument stated. You made up the argument that they are going too far. It's because you developed an idea of me, probably a cartoonish idea of me that dehumanizes me, and then made up your answer for my argument instead of just critically reading what I say and responding.
Don't worry. This is common online. It's an actual problem you're just partaking in. If you really cared about how people treat others online then you should become aware of this.

I developed that idea because you clearly have trouble articulating what your idea is unless it's in the most vaguest form.
How hard was it to say, "this policy is probably for the best, but they aren't going enough with it because these other subreddits exist." ?? Instead you went on some rant about why SRS isn't banned and that their overall policy is now horseshit because of that. It isn't, we can all read between the lines what you're actually arguing.
It took Fenderputty two posts to do so, and you're ten posts deep and still haven't articulated that. Whose fault is that? Not mine. I thoroughly read and critically argued why your stance was ignorant, but you're clearly dismissive of it and arguing something else now.

I don't have trouble articulating. I have trouble being heard through your preset bias. Everything I've said is plainly in view. Fender didn't have as much trouble getting that for some reason. You should ask yourself why.
For example, I am still not stating "this policy is probably for the best". I am not making a moral judgement here. I am stating that they will have to end up banning other subreddits to follow along with this reasoning of theirs. I gave SRS as an example since it's on the other side of the political spectrum. Being on the other side of spectrum makes it more of a test of their stated policy. If they don't do that policiy, then it's a bunch of "gooblegabble" or "horseshit" or less easily misconstrued: a bunch of meaningless talk.
Nor am I ranting. There is nothing ranty about what I said. It's all calm and reasoned.
PS: FWIW The admin said their first approach to dealing with subs like SRS is through technology that blocks them from brigading. Doesn't really deal with the stalking aspect, but they said they'd rather deal with them through tech rather than outright banning.
I cannot find a response on the other racist subreddits so far.
