We'd honestly rather not ban people. :o

Throwing people out for weeks or months at a time with no direct explanation, attempt at understanding, etc doesn't really do anything in the long run. Many times a small dialogue is all that's needed to get everyone groovy again. Some times that doesn't work because people naturally get invested in the arguments. We want people to talk it out. That's the goal. Work things out, understand where the other person comes from or at the very least learn to tolerate it, then grow from there.

Banning people is easy. And we do it lol. It doesn't solve every problem by itself though. Some people ask for bans instead of trying to get on the same page and of course we'll accommodate those requests. The community here is awesome and we'd like to believe that issues can be resolved with communication and chill. If not... Sucks that things didn't work out lol

No, not at all. The community as a whole has been rather fantastic, imo, and the fact that there are a few bad and shortsighted individuals doesn't change the fact. If anything, we want the community to grow and integrate itself as much as possible. I'd also personally would love for some of the good posters like Wooden to make a comeback and be an active voice for the community.

Potentially quite true, but that's a challenge we are willing to accept and it's why our policies and moderation tools will have to expand to deal with different scenarios.

Wilbury asked us to stop using images and gifs of his persona and everyone, including rvy, stopped without a problem.

The mods are pretty cool with in-community call outs and directed conversation so if people are getting too personal, if the community as a whole comments that it's not cool, seems to me that would help. They generally want to be as hands off as possible but if you don't alert them to issues, that's also your fault so...

Same. Xenophobic and bigoted posts are polar opposites of civility and taking a hardline stance against such comments is hardly "progressive"

I think there's not enough room left for nuance here. There are a lot of "opinions" that are nothing more than bullshit rationalizations for bigotry. You'll see this a lot with racism and sexism in particular. Code words, general othering, but no real "hate speech" is actually uttered. It's this form of discrimination that's harder to tackle but really no less toxic to the individuals it's seeking to harm.

I'd like to create this as a safe enough space that you can have "an opinion" that is that way, but through discussion people can point out why it's generally considered a regression on society.

In general, i agree. But not everyone from all over the world comes from the same education / upbringing as we/you/me have.

I've met people here at university that have had otherwise radically unacceptable views, but were normal back home.
