It's not just the one week. Lots of players have had a condensed pre season due to Copa America, Gold Cup, U21 Euros, or EURO qualifiers at the end of the season. It's not good for the league. It's been a while since I've seen Arsenal and Chelsea fuck up such easy first matches.

I just looked up how many Premier League players were at the Copa. 20 were there. Of that, 4 didn't play (Ospina, Cuadrado, Rojo, E Valencia), 6 played 20 minutes (Paredes, Falcao, Alexis, Lamela, Carlos Sanchez, Firmino), and 4 haven't played yet (Fernandinho, Demichelis, Aguero, Zabaleta)
Romero, Coutinho, Willian, Mariappa and Morgan all played, and all played relatively well (or scored fucking thundercunt goals innit). Coates played shit, but that's because he is shit.
They're professional footballers; a week's difference for the vast majority of them will not make that much of a difference. The new managers and coaching and transfers and general rustiness at the start of the season is what affects it more. There's a myriad of reasons as to why, and it's the same every season.
