By fadetoblack Go To PostI don't have any confidence in Arsenal's midfield to protect their defense and thus win games by tight margins that might otherwise become a draw. You'd challenge with Benzema, maybe, for part of the year, but you'll fall behind Chelsea and Man United. 3rd place, I'd guess.
The problem isn't the cover. Coquelin is really good at providing that actually. The problem is that we don't have a really complete player at 6 who can provide cover consistently AND playmake/facilitate our transitions from defense to offense in buildup play. If we pair Coq with Wilshere or Ramsey, it diminishes both of their individual strengths. anyway, Man United are going to take a while to integrate all their new players, and I see LVG playing around with their lineups and positions again way too much. Still not contenders IMO.
Also your analysis of our defense ignores a few things. Due to injuries, the WC, and internal squad position battles our defense changed a lot over the course of a season. Chambers was our right back for ages and it fucked the whole thing. Chesney had a middling season and was displaced. Debuchy was injured and we had to play Bellerin, who luckily ended up being very good. Arteta was injured and we had to play fucking Flamini. It wasn't till later that we got Le Coq. Our defense actually improved quite a bit to where it is now. And we have Cech as well, whose distribution is already making an impact.
Also, our tactics shifted quite a bit over the season as well. Wenger was having serious issues with finding the optimum shape for our midfield and we've pretty much settled on a 4231 now.

I would be utterly shocked if we finish lower than 2nd. Sterling is a huge addition. I don't know if we've addressed our issues for the Champions League, but for the Premier League, adding Sterling and Delph plus the additions of Lopes and Denayer are enough to retain 2nd (at worst). Add in de Bruyne, and our attack comfortably rivals any team in Europe. Would have preferred we brought in a RB or LB (or both) this summer in exchange for Kolarov or Sagna but it seems unlikely.

I don't give a shit about Benzema, he is no Lewandowski anyway, but speaking about transfers that won't happen even if you use 2 tinfoil hats at once, is boring.
Even the usual Arsenal talk about DMs, which is nothing else than a repetition of the other 365 days a year, is alot more enjoyable.

City is hard to say. Their season hinges on whether yaya has decided to give a crap again and how long they can keep their glass cannons together. I still think they should have signed jimmy on for another year and I don't really have much confidence in their back line. Sterling's a good pick up obviously.
City have, and continue to be, one Aguero injury away from losing to whomever they're facing. He is the only player in their team that is a legitimate difference maker when it comes to collecting points.
Silva and Yaya are wonderful players who will score 10+ goals a year. But they'll also dip and disappear from time to time and those are the games that made the difference last year.

Never said other teams won't challenge Chelsea. Think the top 4 will be much more compact this year.
Everyone can think what they want. Feel confident that adding Cech and Benz would have Arsenal competing with Chelsea. Sure United and City will be close as well.

Don't think you're quite on the money there Weddy. United have definitely improved the squad in some areas, but their two biggest weakness, centre half and centre forward have, so far, seen zero reinforcements. Maybe an improved midfield cover will stop us from conceding some silly goals, but we still don't have a game changing striker. United don't have a match winning striker anymore. A major problem was not being able to convert possession into goals. We haven't brought in anyone to rectify that.

I don't know if it was all the international duty or not getting a birthday cake but it's hard to have faith in him as a difference maker this yearHe's looked very good in the preseason.. very interested if you will. We'll see how it carries throughout the season. He can't be relied upon to defend, but he's as good a passer and shooter as exists in the world, so I'm glad he'll still be at City. In an ideal scenario though, he's played in a 3 man midfield with Delph and Fernandinho supporting him. There's no way we can rely on him for a tough game in 2 man midfield at this point.
Think he'll score about 15 this year. Aguero 25, Yaya 15, Sterling 12, Silva 12. Bony is a wildcard as it's just going to depend on how often we're using two strikers. I think he gets at a minimum 10 either way.

I just think a box to box who doesn't like to run or defend anymore is going to cost you games. Delph works pretty hard, but I don't find him very creative (or good honestly).
Either way, I hope you guys give Dzeko another go and Pelle stops using him as a super sub or sticking him in on the wing. He can do better than that.

He can do better than that.Would be absolutely shocked if Dzeko is still at City this season. Legitimately shocked. I've never seen a player look less interested in the preseason.. couldn't have given two shits. He's done nothing that could be considered preparation for the season so I'm very concerned. We need to sort him out asap -- if Roma won't pony up, then they need to give Edin a swift kick up the ass and tell him to wake up and put in some effort. City have a final friendly with Stuttgart on Saturday and if he starts, then I think we might keep him.
We need another CB and RB. Mangala might come good but I don't have a tonne of faith in that. Demichelis is good cover but he's not a league winning CB. We need a world class RB To further strengthen the backline and provide an extra dimension to our attack. He'll have to cover a lot of ground.
If we buy KDB we'll definitely be playing 4231. I don't have a load of belief in any 2 of Yaya, Fernando, Fernandinho and Delph to deliver a league title (or do much in europe) in a 2 man midfield. So we need a CM/DM. A very good one. Especially with our relatively dodgy backline.
We'll have a very envious attack but things are too dodgy in the engine room and at the back to believe we'll run away with it or even put up a sustained challenge. A distant third could be our lot for this year if these things aren't sorted.
A proper great CM is a necessity followed by a CB. An RB would be great too.
But first we have to buy KDB to stop teams being able to shut us down by taking Silva out of the game.

The sad thing for me about Benz to arsenal is that arsenal fans should be against him because even in 2009 before madrid registered interest, Benz was 99% going to manchester united. He already rejected Wenger and Arsenal on the basis that he didnt believe arsenal were good enough for him due to lacking prestige and that SAF > Wenger. Even back then Wenger had no chance to sign benz to begin with. Benz was going to choose manutd had florentino not personally intervened and took benz to madrid himself. But enough of history lesson.
6 years later and wenger is still trying. Dunno if i should admire the persistence or pity the old fool.
Also I'm working on the assumption Dzeko will be gone too. That leaves us Aguero and Bony as the main strikers. Normally I'd say we needed another but we have some young guys and Sterling can play up front if really needed and with KDB in we could play without a striker if it comes to it.
I'm very pessimistic altogether.

I do think we'll rely on Iheanacho as third choice (or fourth, behind Sterling) and he's never shown anything to suggest he isn't ready for it. In my ideal world, we'd sign Youri Tielemans for our CM need and work him in over the next few years.
I'm very pessimistic altogether.
I'd be shocked if we buy another CB since Denayer agreed to a five year deal. His agent had said beforehand that playing time was going to play a big role. I think he's 4th choice but could be a starter by the end of the season.

It just feels to me like they've written off the league this year. Denayer is good but he'd really have to strike up a great partnership with Kompany. We really need our CBs to be solid this year. This would stop Kompany making rash challenges because he doesn't trust the guy beside him.
And like I said, we have an issue in midfield.
Pogba pls :'(
