I go to Starbucks when I have no other choice. The only place that's worse than Starbucks is McCafe.

right! like drinking fresh campfire
Two reasons I've read about before. To meet bulk demands to all stores in a timely manner, they have a flash roasting method that's quicker than regular roasting but leaves a burnt taste (because it has been burnt). Other reason is that they want customers to veer towards more expensive flavored coffees. Even their cheaper, plain drinks make bank when customers ask for a shot of flavor to improve/mask the taste; the profit margins on those cheaply made syrups are apparently huge. Although they could, Starbucks has no financial interest in making a perfect $1-2 cup of coffee for you to become a fan of and not order anything else.

I started buying my whole beans online and grinding them at my house. I can't stand starbucks coffee. The office I work at has an espresso machine and I usually get an americano from it. It is a half blessing though as the front desk orders the coffee through our staples service and Starbucks is all that's offered.
My friend just got back from hawaii and brought me some Kona Coffee and it's delicious.

I brew my own coffee, can't stand starbucks. I got a problem with someone brewing coffee for me who's not of legal drinking age. Lil guy or gal hasn't lived long enough to know what a good cup of coffee taste like

I never understood how people got espresso at Starbucks either. It's the most watered down stuff I've ever had.

they have some of the worst espresso I have ever experienced. I don't mind it so much in the (very rare) instances I get a latte or what have you, but their espresso isn't even acceptable in an emergency.

#1 is true but also misses the most crucial truth of why it's done that way.
I actually know an executive at Universal Studios who speaks to Howard Schultz frequently. And the reason why their coffee tastes so burnt is for the sake of consistency. The only way they can maintain taste consistency from store to store is employ a process that burns the beans (as you said), thus deteriorates their quality. On the other hand, it maintains consistency.

wow so Starbucks wants to taste horrible?
By blackace Go To Postwow so Starbucks wants to taste horrible?
Yes. It's a huge priority for them to make sure that one Starbucks is not 'better' than the other, especially given their extremely close proximities in major cities.
