By Granadier Go To PostMan, this website is so much better than GAF now with a dark theme. I rescind all of my previous negative statements.+1
Also, all this lore talk and Halo discussions is great.
Long live HaloENT
This place is great. It's so much more chill than GAF.
Also I agree the lore discussion is awesome, I need to read Wesley's post.
By Tawpgun Go To PostThat gif is the perfect summary of breakout. Hope that mode is being overhauled or cut.Really? I thought Breakout was pretty good in the beta. Coming back from a 4v1 was incredibly satisfying.
I think an objective could improve it though. Also I agree that pistol starts with SMGs on map would be better.
By thornXBL Go To PostI still want to try Pistol Only starts on Breakout, with SMG on map instead of BRAgreed. I think that would reduce a lot of the "bum rush the fuck out of their base" tactics that were present during the beta.
Who knows though. Hopefully 343 discuss the mode soon and what it will eventually look like.
By Tawpgun Go To PostThat gif is the perfect summary of breakout. Hope that mode is being overhauled or cut.I'm sure they had an intractable breakout game at Comic-Con because they plan to cut it. :P
I didn't like Breakout either, it doesn't feel like Halo to me, though I'm just going to avoid playing it, unless there's achievements.
What Westley said about the level in Halo 4, where the ghost of the Librarian basically kidnaps Cortana, so that the Chief would come to her. It takes a journey to get to the Librarian. What were Cortana and the Librarian doing all that time, playing tiddly winks?
Once John got to the Librarian we had that whole cut scene about what the Didact had done, and the fact that he would not be able to face the Didact and survive. The Librarian then does something to MC, accelerates his progression or genetics so he won't be affected by the composer. So what did she do to Cortana while she led John to her location?

Did we ever get confirmation of being able to do objectives in Breakout?
I'd love to make Counterstrike Halo. (Then again, we could probably just tune the settings of assault to replicate that).

Fantastic post essay Wesley! ;)
Just finished reading it, I think the Domain theory is the most likely, especially when you consider the sneak peak we've had of H5's campaign.
Also something interesting I found the other day in the H4 campaign is an audio log from Halsey regarding Cortana on the level, Requiem:
Could this "rogue element" be related to the geas idea you were discussing?

Unknown voice: "Catherine Halsey Research excerpt, 11 February 2550."
Halsey: "A interesting factor here isn't that H-1 disabled the viral termination code I had implanted in her matrix. These metrics imply its success wasn't just unlikely, but that even the acceptance of the 7-year life cycle estimates may not apply."
Halsey: "Thus far, I've determined that the unique circumstances of her creation have triggered what I can only refer to as a recessive variant in the A.I. seed."
Halsey: "As her architect, I'm currently at a loss as to the origin of the development of this rogue element. Very curious."

By Lord of Admirals Go To PostDid we ever get confirmation of being able to do objectives in Breakout? If there is some sort of Megalo scripting I hope someone creates a gametype like counter strike that uses the REC system for weapons in a breakout style gametype.

Also, Assault: 2 rounds 15 minutes, plant time 10 sec. One bomb. One life no respawns.

It was worse on Trench. It would just be on the ground on the left side of spawn. At least in Crossfire you had to go up a tower where everyone could see you.

What I liked most about that audio quip was that it called back to Halsey's notebook and ponderings she had made.
I think it's entirely possible that this "rogue element" could be the geas- and while it was dormant to Cortana on a conscious level, I think that it, in a way, it was able to defend itself via use of subconscious manipulation of Cortana's AI structuring. Given all that Cortana has endured, I don't think an actual human would have made it as far. It was because she was an AI that she was able to resist the Gravemind long enough for Chief to come back to her. It was because she was an AI that she was able to restrain the Ur-Didact long enough to allow Chief to subdue him. It was because she was an AI that she was able to copy herself and possibly allow her reunification (think about how BB was in the Kilo-Five trilogy with his separated bits) or restoration.
The geas are powerful, and manifest themselves in different ways, which is dependent on the being that it inhabits. A geas within a human is going to act much differently than a geas within an AI... Something that I don't think even the Librarian could have foreseen... Which might be why she "kidnapped" Cortana during the Reclaimer level of Halo 4. It's possible that she saw within this advanced ancilla that there, after all this time, was the culmination of her literal life's work.
What she may have done in between the time of kidnapping her and returning her to Chief remains unclear...

They do, in that if you start out with less effective ranged weapons you have more incentive to move in, and they don't, in that if one team gets a lock on the rifles your team is just gonna end up getting pinned down.

By Ragnarok Flames Go To PostDon't read any waypoin Thread about AR Starts. Can we beat it into people that AR Starts don't really promote map movement.I'd actually argue the opposite. At least people with AR's are motivated to look for new and better weapons.
Regardless, this is the most accurate AR we've ever had in a Halo game. I trust 343i's judgement on the AR starts. Plus, they did say that the maps would have an abundance of BRs on 15 second respawn times.

By that logic, the game of Halo 4 itself, Escalation and the Halo 4 Essential Guide are all lying and thus 343 Industries supplied false information when they say Cortana is dead. That would seem excessive if they were going to bring her back, moreso when the Didact's fate is never confirmed dead or alive, only just defeated or unknown. Your theoretical sounds more like special pleading to me.
Good stuff lol.

By Lord of Admirals Go To PostI'd actually argue the opposite. At least people with AR's are motivated to look for new and better weapons. And if my team gets all brs and pins your team in the base? Where the map movement then? Its honestly a flawed argument that is always used to defend AR Starts. And there have been hundreds upon hundreds of posts arguing both sides.

And there have been hundreds upon hundreds of posts arguing both sides.New pistol is fairly accurate at range so it shouldn't be too difficult to contest against BR users, the AR is also pretty viable at short to mid range now as well. I also found movement to be massively hindered with BR starts in H5. There was lots of peeking and pinging across map in my experience. I think AR/Pistol starts will work pretty well, assuming we're discussing H5.
Any other Halo and I completely agree.

Breakout looks fine, but if it had a Bomb objective or a Hostage objective it'd be cooler. Eliminating teams or timer-scamming for ties just doesn't seem exciting to me imo.

By Ragnarok Flames Go To PostObjectively spawning with a utility weapon in any halo game is better. Its a weapon that is useful at most ranges and isn't an inaccurate automatic. And now we're talking about what qualifies as a "utility weapon." The H5 pistol does work at close and medium ranges, and is (at minimum) good enough to ping long+ range opponents out of scope, which is really all it needs to be able to do to avoid lockout. H5 AR does work at superclose and close ranges, is decent at medium, and thanks to the ADS spread reduction can ping long range enemies out of scope.
Both of those sound utility-esque to me. Neither can be used to lock down long sightlines at spawn, thus necessitating and enabling a scramble for a BR, DMR, or power weapon.

I thought the AR in H5 was fairly good actually, they finally managed to make an AR which is somewhat satisfying to use.
By Ragnarok Flames Go To PostClose range. Maybe 2-3 meters out of melee rangeWhy so short though? That essentially makes the weapon completely worthless. What's the point of even having it in the sandbox if it's that poor?
On an unrelated note, it appears Madness is lurking in the shadows of HaloENT :P
By Ragnarok Flames Go To PostClose range. Maybe 2-3 meters out of melee rangeSee, that just feels too limited to me. You shouldn't be able to outshoot a BR at medium, but you should at least have a fighting chance if the other guy's aim is off. At 3 meters away, you're talking about not being able to hit somebody from across the tower in Empire.
