I love the new Covenant design. The organic, insect style is very cool. The Banshee especially looks amazing.

The Covenant has always had an insect-inspired design. I'm not sure why all of the sudden it's a problem?
By Wesleyshark Go To PostI always refer to them as that haha. Covenant faction. Covenant Remnant. Whatever. :pGlad this was explicitly explained in the game!
The original Jackals are still there.
The Jackals in Halo 4 and 5 are a subspecies of Kigyar called the Ibie'shan.
The Jackals from Halo 1-3 are a subspecies called the Ruutian.
The Jackals in Halo Reach are a 3rd subspecies known as the T'Vaoan.

This shit looks like flood or even precursor more than covenant.
Covenant used to be about super rounded, bulbous shapes. Now everything looks like a beetle
I think my main criticism of the art design 343 uses is everything tends to be overdesigned. At least that's the way it looks coming off of Halo 3's visuals
By Tawpgun Go To PostGlad this was explicitly explained in the game! The Wraiths, Ghosts and Phantoms all look like beetles... They have since Halo CE. Even the Banshee follows suit... And then there's the Scarab. Massively insectile.

The Harvester is a sort of giant Scarab, as it's powered/fueled by a colony of Legkolo worms known as the Sbaolekgolo. Makes sense given that both the Scarab and Hunter are very insectoid. The Harvester is just a giant scale variant.
By Wesleyshark Go To PostI always refer to them as that haha. Covenant faction. Covenant Remnant. Whatever. :pActually, the T'vaoan are the only subspecies. The Rhuutian and Ibie'shan are just plain old Kig-Yar.

Either way... There's lots of variety and I'm not sure why that needs to be explained in-game. Was Bungie hung out to dry for introducing the T'vaoan without explanation in-game? I wasn't a GAFfer back then lol.

Though, in the case of the Skirmisher, it wasn't too much of a problem because the standard Jackal we're all used to is still in the game.

Both machines are Legkolo-infused- easy to make parallels as far as design and function and iteration are concerned.

Big difference is that Scarab has a giant frickin' laser on its head. The Harvester has a big ol' hatch.

has there been much real speculation on the direction halo 5's story will take? possibly the lore thread at gaf?
i admit i'd gotten lazy in following the lore post halo 3. i only followed the surface events of 4. but yesterday i had my 2 year old take a 3 hour nap on me so i sat and watched all the ce:a, h2:a, and h4 terminals (many for the first time!) as well as rewatching all of the cutscenes from spartan ops (wow, those were so well done by the way. they even fit together pretty darn well as a short film. more of this please 343).
i'm definitely no lore expert, and some of what i saw still escaped me, but i cant help think about seeds planted for halo 5. certainly with halsey present, the janus key will play a role. will we be rescuing halsey from jul in game? how will halsey respond, was her quest for revenge just taking advantage of jul to arrange a later escape? cortana is definitely around in some form, since i dont think a vision alone could impart new info to masterchief. how else will she be a part of halo 5? what exactly are the role of the guardians? chief apparently got access to and was already aboard the guardian in the e3 demo, while the warden wouldnt allow locke to follow. does this mean, to some extent, some of the forerunner/prometheans may be assisting chief?
the above are mostly rhetorical, but if you'd like to respond to them you can. otherwise, what are your thoughts on where halo 5 is going?

The only thing that I didn't like about the art design change was Master Chief's armor. I actually quite like the look, but to change the main character's look without explanation was a misstep. What they should have done was have him start out in the regular Mark VI and then get the new variant when he reaches the Infinity.
I think the Covie re-designs are good, they really don't need explanations either. The old wraith looked like a rock, its design was being held back in Halo 1's low polygon days. Everything looks more alien now, which suits the Covenant art style.

Fahz your reply to my post was spot on.
RIP in peace Iwata. Ya brought a hell of a lot of joy to people everywhere.
If you want to make the argument that technical limitations were what held back designs, look at the original concept art as that is the closest you'll get to the actual vision of what something was supposed to be. If you do that, I'm sure you will notice that the Grunts of 343 still do not fit the original vision of the Grunt. The most obvious examole being that Grunts didn't have #butts cheeks. The proportions of the head and neck are also noticeably different as the original Grunts neck did not look like an old man with a case of toad throat. You could also note one of the biggest deviations; IT'S GOT FRICKIN' FLESHY SKIN INSTEAD OF AN EXOSKELETON. Every Grunt has had an exoskeleton. You can see it in not only the texture of the skin, but the segmented appendages and limbs. 343's Grunts had lizard skin and some warts on their arms. Even the new iteration for Halo 5 has lizard skin on its head, neck, arms, and I believe its torso as well. Bungie's adjustments to the Grunts design were very minor and in fact were more in line with what the Grunt was supposed to look like. Bungie was refining the design with each iteration. However, there is only so far you cam go before ya camt really refine it any further. We pretty much hit that with Halo 3.
If 343 wants to expand the universe with new species and sub species, that's radical. Just make sure that you acknowledge that in the actual game by having these new ones fight alongside the old ones. Similar to the Skirmishers. That's how ya god damn do it.
If you like the new designs that is fine dude. Good on ya for enjoying it. However do NOT act as if people being upset by the changes is somehow shocking or unreasonable. It comes off as not only condescending, but dickish to act like people are weird for wanting an internal consistency in the universe. Or just simply wanting the original designs to be respected.

I've never really tried to ninja people in Halo before (I'm not talking about Ryn's generic gamertag here), though I think it's a useful skill to have, so I've been hoping to get better at it before Halo 5 comes out. While I'd like to do it I also know that you shouldn't do it for the hell of it, I don't like putting myself in that situation unless it's the best option.
Anyway I got a good opportunity yesterday and went for it.

I'm not saying any of that at all. What I'm referring to is how obnoxious people are being over it to the point where they are accusing the developer of purposely changing things just to piss off fans or "changing for the sake of change" or having no right to express their own artistic view on the Haloverse without getting a twenty point bulletin about their justification for doing so.
The grunts look like hyper detailed halo CE grunts, save for their gas mask modules being routed through their nostrils instead of over their entire face. The Covenant vehicles are merely an iteration and an evolution of what has always been a weird mix of insecticile and alien architecture. Instead of bulbous, plain blobs that shoot plasma, they are becoming intricately detailed bulbous forms with sleek contours all at the same time. The new Wraith is gorgeous... Yet still looks like a Wraith, etc..

Well, I think the new Wraith (at least in that one shot from that ViDoc) looks dumb and I much prefer the way it looked in every other Halo game. New Ghost is cool, but that Wraith barely looks like a Wraith to me, it has no Wraith-like base structure or back "wings" like it used to and I don't like the change. Sounds like you'd love Spartan Ops, then.
One thing I think about regarding 343i's art direction of Halo, is that it's being spearheaded by Sparth now, who's regarded as one of the better concept artists. You can even see in The Sprint just how involved he is in Halo 5's art direction. He pre-approves everything. Many, many people really like his concept art though, but dislike it when it's actually executed accurately in-game.
I'm absolutely blown away about how good 343i's artists are at recreating Sparth's concept art in-game. That's not a talent you find easily.

The problem is when subjective preferences get couched as absolute truths, and are defended as such, with much questioning of motives and very real disdain. That sort of shit is just toxic.
