By DarthDementous Go To PostHmm, the Destiny OST isn't doing it for me like Halo's. Maybe it'll pick up because I'm only in the early stages but I dunno, nothing is really jumping out at me which is odd considering Marty composed the soundtrack (or was it parts of it? I'm guessing Michael Salvatori wasn't there either?)
There are some excellent tracks... But most of them are used hyper repetitively or shuttered to late in the vanilla game (the final boss fight in vanilla has a righteously great theme). The DLC packs had some good music (House of Wolves especially), and TTK has some really solid new pieces, but yeah... It doesn't come close to Halo's themes as a whole.
I've played A LOT of destiny and if you put me on the spot to hum some of the themes, I'd only be able to do maybe 4 or 5 tops. The rest of the OST is either too generic or blanketed by gunfire.
Speaking of gunfire... That they did get right. The sounds of all of the different guns and SWORDS and magical abilities are so satisfying. As you continue to play you'll start to be able to pick out this gun from that just from the sound of it. Nothing new for games with lots of toys, of course, but given the sheer amount of loot in this game, they did a good job making many unique and distinct sounds. I just wish the music also followed suit.

By Granadier Go To Postremember this?I remember waking up to 30 pages of HaloGAF shitting salt bricks. What a day it was.
that was the time when HaloGAF lost its fucking mind
By Lord of Admirals Go To PostA recap of the last two pages:While the beaks were changed, the adjustment was very subtle. Their head kept the same structure while changing the beak teeth into weird spiny teeth (which I felt was a downgrade). They brought back a mix of the beak and teeth in Halo 3 and onwards however which was a decent compromise.
Halo 4 Jackals are weird
loleaks
Meanwhile, no one is bothered by the Halo 2 Jackals not having a beak, or the Halo CE jackal having its teeth fused together.
Then we have Halo 4's aborted fetus babies from the Turok sequel that never was. Even the Skirmishers still looked like they were of the same family tree as the Jackals. Yet in Halo 4 the only thing that is recognizable is the shield and humanoid bodies.
This actually is a good example of the difference between how Bungie made changes to their designs vs 343. Bungie made a bunch of subtle changes that didn't really mess with the overall look of the design. The Grunts and Jackals are the best examples for this.

By -Ryn Go To PostThey did not have jetpacks no lol
Skirmishers were especially mobile and would leap waaaaaay high. The Jackals having jetpacks is likely another addition to accommodate the more vertical gameplay. Grunts were given little jump packs in Halo 4 as well.
As far as the Halo 4 Jackals are concerned I really wouldn't mind them much if we had the original Jackals fighting alongside them, but I've kinda given up on that ever happening.
Well, that's been my hope since the Bungie era and on, and we've always been prone to disappointment, isn't it :) Seeing different models of Wraiths being used, or having H3-era BRs and 'Hogs on the Dawn before transitioning to the modern UNSC armory in Halo 4, having multiple versions of Jackals...
*le sigh*
Misfits was GOAT first two seasons, third season was good but not great and then fourth onward was cringe. Defeating one of the big bads by fucking his power out of him 100m up in the air will forever be the most WTF thing I've ever seen on TV haha

Locke's theme is so wonderfully recognizable and it really is a great melody. It'll be nice to hear a more quiet reserved version in 'Jameson Locke' as all other times it has been bombastic (the opening osiris cinematic).

Sure, Bungie made changes over longer periods of time, but the end result was still very different to what we started with. With a few adjustments (namely the eyes), Halo 4's model could easily pass as an HD version of the CE model.

Halo 4 is still recognizable as a Jackal, just as much as Skirmishers, and I actually love that they've chosen to acknowledge how closely related reptiles and birds are. Skirmishers are the avian extreme, while Halo 4's model is the reptilian extreme.

History has already proven that making games for a casual audience is not a sustainable business. They have short attention spans are easily influenced by new and shiny. I get his underlying point, but I don't think relying on the casuals for the definition of whether a game is solid or not is a good MO.
I'm confused by what that writer is saying. Is he saying it's good to make adjustments to a game over time to keep the franchise from being the exact same thing for decades, or is he saying there should be no changes made and that we should go back to HCE and live there eternally?
Honestly, while I can understand that to some gamers the games they play can get too complicated, there's also something to be said for actually adding value to the game's mechanics and not just rehashing the exact same game.
Heck, even in the 90's Mario gained new abilities in SMB3 that he hadn't had before that arguably added an extra layer of complication and skill gap. A game developer should never be satisfied with simply creating more of the exact same product again and again, but they should also respect what made the original great and lovable.

By Ragnarok Flames Go To Posthttp://imgur.com/BoiZdHSIt's honestly a bit more complicated than that. It has to do with a series' game design more than a blanket statement that provides a winning formula for all shooters.

This guy's wife isn't the holy grail of data points that somehow unlocked the solution to making fun shooters. Point being that most people I've played Halo with on my campus find Halo 4 to be one of the best Halos, and find the lack of sprint or existence of descope in the older games to be a "bad choice". I could easily make an enlightened decision based on these people claiming that Halo needs to implement more modern shooter elements.

With a few adjustments (namely the eyes), Halo 4's model could easily pass as an HD version of the CE model.I'm not really sure how you can argue that first point. Just glancing at the picture you can see obvious differences between the CE Jackal and the 4 Jackal. Most notably the jaw and the size of the eyes. The original Jackal had very large eyes and an avian skull with a beak to match whereas the new iteration had much smaller eyes which were pushed forward and a very large jaw that reflect an alligator or angler fish. It also has very noticeable pointed teeth which the original Jackal lacked. The only similarity between the 2 being the spine feather things on the back of the head. If you took the two heads and put them side by side without their bodies you would not be able to say they are of the same family line.

You could say very reasonably that this new Jackal is another sub species as you described which took to the other end of the spectrum with the regular Jackal being the middle ground between the three groups. And that would be totally cool. The problem is that the new design is not treated as another sub species. They are treated as regular ol' Jackals with no reference to their more Avian counter parts. Interestingly, they are in the comics. Problem with that is that most people don't read those. So it really doesn't matter.

The new Jackal is definitely treated as a different subspecies, we just don't see the two alongside each other in the games because of resource constraints. The Halo 4 Jackals are called Ibie'shans. They evolved on a more volcanic continent and retained many features of the Kig-Yar of old.

I'll make a shitty comparison to better illustrate their differences when I get home but I just don't see how you think they are so similar.

As for the lore, saying that they are different in the expanded lore doesn't mean you are treating them as a different species. It's the same problem we had with Halo 4's story telling for the Didact and well... most everything. The game can't rely on the player to know all of this stuff. In Halo 4 their differences aren't acknowledged whatsoever and they are still called Jackals. Something as simple as changing their name to the Volkackals or Jinkals or Mandrakes or even Reptal Probes. ANYTHING. They could've even been a new covenant enemy type to replace the Skirmishers which would've been nice considering all the missing factions.
