You can actually do even more. There's an Additional Further Maths A-level which is essentially university level maths. They didn't offer it at my school though.


Also your terminology is quite different to mine. I've technically already finished college in the UK. Also I have no idea what college credit is.

Interesting commercial. I hope that it's multi-part and more is shown later in the game. If I were to speculate, I would say that ONI or whatever that voice is is trying to cover up Chief going AWOL and disappearing by saying that he died. Not to mention the alternate reality stuff they hinted at with the Chief/Locke trailers from all those months ago.

I have also heard the same–most people I have talked to say that you start learning once you graduate. Honestly, that's pretty discouraging. I'm just sick of feeling like I'm spinning my wheels and getting nowhere.

iOS dev is what I want to work in after graduation, so that's what most of my side projects are using. But UE4 is free and fun to play around with, along with Unity. Webdev is always fun to mess around in, (although I wouldn't want to do it in my career). Do you have a GitHub account and such? That's a great way to show off things you've made or messed around with.

This is the tough stage. All I can say is to pick something that sounds even remotely interesting to yourself, even if you are worried if it'll be worth it. Also, make a GitHub account. They rock.

I have a CS degree, and I can tell you, if you're not interested in programming it's not a degree hugely worth getting. My best recommendation I could give is to make sure you do a co-op or internship. This will not only be super educational, but also will test whether you have any interest in working in the field (or the type of culture associated with the field). I used to be really into the idea of doing game dev, but the more research you do on it the less thrilling it looks like as a day job. Also, don't underestimate how impressive personal projects can look on a resume. Being able to build something from scratch shows you can self-research, and it also gives you something to talk about in interviews that you are passionate about.

Don't be fooled though by it being the "game dev" industry, if you're programming it is extremely important that you know your CS very well (optimizations, performance comparisons, common algorithms, 3d math), since a huge amount of the jobs are low-level stuff like how to efficiently render a scene and so on. (Though there are dedicated jobs usually referred to as "Gameplay programming," where you need to account for how tight the character controls and whatnot).

I appreciate this post. Thanks for taking the time to write it up. I know that I enjoy programming and learning it, but I just don't know what direction to go. I have had bad experiences with a previous employer that has soured my experience with the industry. I think I might slow down my degree and work on personal projects to find a passion. It's so hard to make time for all of this stuff. I'm constantly asking myself If I should just stop playing games so I don't get distracted.

Really glad they got rid of the post-death music in multiplayer. Just kinda tacky feeling, imo. Not as bad as Crysis 2 multiplayer though, you die and it's just a loud ass "beeeeeeeeeep!" almost like you're being conditioned to hate dying just from the sound alone. It took me 5 years to do my degree, and I switched programs twice and did an eight month coop, so don't sweat getting it done quickly. You'll also get a chance to build lots of stuff in classes (especially upper level ones).

Flinch just wasn't fun to deal with. Descope could be a challenge and if you were smart and used cover you could really use it to your advantage. It's too bad because Halo 4 doubles is actually really good, but descope brings it down.

I did some drafting in high school and really enjoyed it! I wish I had CAD to tinker around with. Also spent a semester with 3dsMax which was fun, but i'm not artsy enough to consider doing that type of stuff as a profession.
