It's entirely possible it had something to do with XBL in general rather than MCC. I was getting all sorts of wonkiness that's not usual for the game. Usually just force-quitting MCC and restarting it works fine, but even after hard resets my console was connecting to the (wired) internet and then giving me weird connectivity prompts.
