I know it's a discussion we've had a lot and this is actually fairly old but there's a really solid post on Beyond about AR/Pistol starts using data from the Gamescom invitational tourney: http://teambeyond.net/forum/topic/10077-halo-5-guardians-esportsarena-weapon-starts-poll/?p=541413
Basic thing to take from it, the pistol is really good and the AR didn't get anywhere near as many kills. Obviously this is pro gameplay so it's not quite representative of your average Halo match however it's still very interesting.

We have 3 different weapon origins each with their own strengths and shortcomings, hopefully the maps will have better weapon mixes than what we saw in the beta (mostly UNSC weapons with some covenant hear and there, but I'm going chalk that up to "it's a beta duh they're not going to have the weapons ready")
What armor would you guys be happy to see return from Halo 4 (that haven't already been confirmed)? I liked Ranger personally.

Prefect, Venator, and Wetwork.
By jem Go To PostIce started it.
:P
Yea but still. If Ice wants to have a raging hate boner for Slaent then let him. We do no good if we go over there and bicker and argue with folks there.

I made them back in the Halo 4 pre-release fallout sorry I dont remember, where you on GAF back then?
mk-v being confirmed not in the game, dark fucking times man.,
By Wesleyshark Go To PostPrefect, Venator, and Wetwork.
I actually really like Wetwork, the helmet looks pretty sharp. Venator was quite popular back in 4 so I would be surprised if it didn't come back in 5. Prefect really stands out compared to the rest of the armor sets in the same way Athlon does.
By nillapuddin Go To Postyeah, and WE beat south carolina…Okay. Yall beat SC.
Do yall think we'll get some of the Halo Online Armors in Halo 5?
Like Flenser or Gunslinger.
And speaking of Halo Online, is there aa working crack for it yet?

By jem Go To PostI completely agree with 3 being a bad Doom, it wasn't Doom at all.So basically the Halo 4 of Doom series.
That said I thought it was an excellent game in its own right. Bloody scary at points.
Is it true that there are weapons with different properties in warzone? Like silenced DMR's & AR's with more range / higher melee damage via bayonet o.O?

By Ragnarok Flames Go To PostI want hayabusa god damn it.
They made the model for Halo 4 Hayabusa. I hope they bring it into Halo 5 either in the base game or post-launch as a new addition to the REQ system. (I think they might have to rename it from Hayabusa for legal reasons).
why not just add a second barrel that shoots out more bayonets
Also, Bungie covered this in their CE commentary. Marty sort of shifts the discussion in that direction (e.g. radio communications not improving 500 years in the future) and Joseph Staten's answer is "That's because weapons 500 years in the future are going to be totally boring. As Rob McLees likes to say, 'a weapon 500 years in the future is a glass of water. And, you drink it, and all your enemies die.' And I think we probably got to that point, like 300 years in the future, and then we decided to go back to fun guns."

By jem Go To PostReally?Everyone knows that centuries will be a lost concept by the time of the great rippening in which a most gnarly tear was made in the fabric of the universe, causing what some believe to be an answer to the call of the cosmic burrito to explode forth. With it, a renaissance of dank ass licks and psycedelic turf surfing will break out on to the scene.
Why so?
And then we'll hit the 27th century.

Carnitas is pretty close to cosmic.

EDIT: Reading that Beyond thread somebody linked (the one about H5 starting weapons), one thing that keeps cropping up is the question of why, if the Pistol is, in the hands of a skilled player, superior to the AR at every range (in a vacuum), why include the AR? And the answer (also from that thread) makes a lot of sense to me: easing unskilled players into skilled gameplay. When they start out at Iron tier, they'll mostly use the AR. And as they improve, they can slooooowly transition to the pistol, until they eventually move over to it (almost) entirely. Very elegant, if that's really what 343 is going for.
By jem Go To PostCompletely unrelated to Halo, but did you guys like Doom 3?Doom 3 was an awesome game. It was different from your average FPS, the graphics were absolutely groundbreaking at the time, and it really set the bar for atmospheric sci-fi games.
I thought it was great game even though it was extremely different to classic Doom. I think of it had a different name it would have been received a lot better.

A well balanced game needs to be easy to pick up and play but hard to master. From the looks of it, H5's AR/pistol set up suits that very well.
By jem Go To PostThat's how I've always thought of it. The AR massively helps to make the game more accessible. Which is a good thing.This. Accessible and skilled aren't antonyms. You've got to be able to make your new players feel at least a modicum of success, or else they'll just straight up and leave. The trick is to do that without dropping the skill level of top-tier play, which I think H5's Pistol + AR starts does nicely.

It doesn't hurt that the AR is actually a fairly good weapon now as well.

There's nothing wrong with including an automatic if the precision gun is more powerful. Just look at Shadowrun. CE's AR also had its uses in close range even at pro level.
By Ragnarok Flames Go To PostI just hate the randomness of automatics. Especially the minisaw and the Noobrifle.Minisaw and noobrifle... SMG and AR?
This is gonna sound weird, but I think the AR could use a little more randomness. Up the spread dramatically after the first few shots, force burst firing. Have those first few (2-3) be pinpoint accurate. Up the range as well.

No. It's a short range weapon. Don't give any sort of accuracy bonus. And randomness is bad for any game, competitive or not.
So this is a bad idea.
