I don't think you need loresplanations et al for this. It's four spartans turning up, totally unexpected, in a battle, at super high speed. They are a human avalanche, smashing into the side of what appears to be a Covie vs ? frontline. Everything melts before them. I sincerely doubt you'll face many situations in campaign where the enemy are at such a disadvantage.
Plus it's fucking epic. Fuck the snobbery about it (as if Halo is some pure, austere non-action title), it's uber.

By digmouse Go To PostTo be honest Halo's actual gameplay is/was always vastly different from the lore and pretty much does not represent it at all. Difficulty wise normal feels more like what it would be in "real life".Even then, the damage tables are WOEFULLY off.
By derpface123 Go To PostAnyone want me to make some more high quality .gifs like the Vale one I posted earlier? Just tell me which scenes to make and I'll do them.Any time buck ground pounds.

But seriously, wanting a refund is pretty reasonable, isn't it? Or even a free copy of H5 since that's what I'd do with the money.

"ABANDON THREAD"
I don't really get why this issue of "The Spartans are *too* badass" is an issue now, after we had stuff like Halo Legends' "The Package"/"The Babysitter"* and Halo Wars cinematics which had the Spartans just laying waste to everything and everyone. Not to mention all those examples are where we saw far more of the acrobatic elements of the Spartans as well.
*I guess the argument against mentioning these is because every story in that collection had to also kill its Spartans in some sort of bizarre OCD ritual, but they still all showed a level of combat prowess above and beyond anything we saw in the games or cutscenes.

All of these clips have me wondering how slick and fast Kelly will move during cut scenes in the game. I am very excited to see that.
A gif of Locke swooping in and ripping an Elite out of a Ghost would be good, too. You can really get a feel for everyone based on how they fight: Locke's mostly coordinating offensives and firing from range or the shadows, only to swoop in lightning-fast and completely dismantle enemy attack patterns. Vale is daring and precarious, practically skirting ice formations as they come in and deliberately jumps a Phantom just to murder the occupants so hard the ones that survived would kill themselves in shame. Tanaka comes across as big and boisterous but is actually calculating her moves so that they hit as hard as they possibly can (she's an engineer, after all), specifically altering her trajectory to slam through a Banshee, ground-pounds first in order to overturn a Wraith, and when push comes to shove she forcefully choreographs enemy troops into patterns that make them more convenient kills, as seen by her hanging on to a Grunt only to pivot and headshot it after she clears her path.
And, well, Buck is shitting himself because he's performing a high-altitude jump in nothing but a beefed up ODST suit and works his way through the fight extremely cautiously, only shotgunning enemies out of absolute necessity and ground-pounding to clear up space to eliminate any chance of failure.

I tried to resist watching the cinematic but I caved...
I NEED THIS IN MAH VAINS!!! Dat soundtrack! Dat hell jump! So BUCK!!!
There is always going to be a segregation of gameplay and story to a degree. Especially in past Halo games I remember thinking to myself that it would be nice if I could actually fight like the super soldier I was supposed to be. But it was as if I was just a regular dude with an overshield who could jog a bit faster and shoot a bit more precisely than other people. When I read the books that just further cemented my dissatisfaction with the actual gameplay.
The gameplay we've seen of Halo 5 and this fuckin amazing cinematic in particular are far more indicative of a Spartan to me. Granted yes, I still can't pull the amazing fisticuff stunts that Vale was doing to the poor bastards in that Phantom and on higher difficulties I'm going to need to be more cautious. But holy shit I'm so incredibly stoked to be fighting a bunch of Covenant baddies again.

By derpface123 Go To PostI wouldn't call it pandering since I think most Halo fans can appreciate some regular Hollywood action, but it's definitely not directed towards those looking for something dripping with references to the expanded universe that was explored in the Halo books they've read multiple times.Ironically it's the closest we've been to the Spartans in the expanded universe.

If they intentionally did this throughout the game, then that's fantastic, and gives further individuality for each character.

It also piques my interest for how each of Blue Team operates in-game. :)

Excellent analysis, except I think they said in a ViDoc that Buck's suit isn't just a beefed-up ODST, it is a real Spartan suit just like the other members of Osiris have. I believe they worded it as "he's tacked on parts of his ODST gear to his Spartan armor".
And as for that .gif...
Wait a sec, is this an in-engine cutscene? I know it's not real-time, but did we get confirmation about whether or not it was actually pre-baked?
let me dream guise
I just noticed that after Locke rips the Elite out of the Ghost he even pauses for a minute to make sure it's dead. This cutscene is a gift that keeps on giving.

I'm working on a quick video project that will be an unlisted YT link that only you and GAF will be told. Will be finished soon.
The second they hit the slope and use its angle to dampen their downward force and to propel them forward as the epic music begins I just grin like an idiot. The ground pounds are fucking awesome

In-game assets with post processing.
Double post.
This whole video is ripe for gifs . I think I've watched it 20 times by now and there's so much to see in the foreground and background. Entirely different pacing than halo 4's opener but by no means a lesser brother. This is a glorious curbstomp right into the campaign proper and into a Galaxy on the verge of galactic chaos.
Same here haha. Grinning ear to ear. This is H A L O B O Y Z

I like this better than the halo 4 opening for the sheer fact that halo 4 cutscene set a dining table for a game or story that never showed up following it. Here, we have a badass cutscene that then throws us right into the action.
Also, to the question of disconnect between cutscenes and reality—the example I always bring up as my personal threshold is Uncharted, where I was always knocked out of how flippant cutscene Nathan Drake was, and how he'd give up as soon as someone pointed a pistol at his friends, but in-game he was absorbing whole clips of enemy fire and personally killed hundreds of goons. He's probably got a higher kill count than the villain in the game.
Whereas in Halo you are a dude specifically built and bred to kill hundreds of goons, and the difference between an enemy going down in a few bullets versus emptying a clip is something I can move beyond because the scenario itself isn't ridiculous, and we're quibbling about degrees.

The Halo 4 intro feels more like an intro to 343's Halo series than an intro to Halo 4 itself.
That said this is one of my favourite shots in a Halo cutscene.

This is too good. It works so well.
By derpface123 Go To Post343 just shot themselves in the foot here.I like that when she kicks the Elite, you see it's shields flash in that spot.
In other news:
By Wahrer Go To Posthahaha, I just noticed that Tanaka deliberately adjusts her trajectory to smash into stuff. She does it with the Banshee in-air and with the rock. Buck's trying to fly through cautiously, and she seriously overtakes him just to body-check the Banshee. That's awesome.I feel like Buck does that because he may still feel as vulnerable as an ODST, whereas the others have accepted their new strength as Spartans.

I love that Locke just palms his BR in that scene where he grabs the elite off the ghost. He could've just put it on his back real quick, but no, Locke is a badass.

Frankie this spelling error better be fixed in the final game. Can't have a typo 10 seconds into the campaign you all worked so hard on, now can we?
I'm buying the game regardless but it would be nice to have it fixed
By Ragnarok Flames Go To PostIt's essentially pandering to an audience that wouldn't play otherwise. Like ADS and sprint.I have always wanted these high action scenes in a Halo game. Bungie never gave them to me. Master Chief awkwardly running from that exploding Forerunner structure in Halo 2 as he jumps into the lake was not exciting and did a poor job animating how Spartans really are. Even the action scenes in Reach weren't too stellar, like Emile dying.

New 11-minute Halo 5 multiplayer gameplay on Empire: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGL9N8GwyzA
Sadly 30fps. You'd think IGN would try to record in 60 but I guess not.
EDIT: Holy hell, I wouldn't recommend watching it if I were you... not only is it 30fps, but the guy spends a lot of time killing idle players, and whatever equipment they used totally fucked up the game's audio... it's absolutely killing my ears listening to it with headphones.
Nothing really new to see here, only watch if you're desperate.

Another terrible player with no situational awareness. How does the press get in games with players AFK?
Goddamnit, people are saying how shitty Halo 5's sound effects are because IGN's video has shitty audio. Not to mention the 30fps. Poorly recorded videos like this on big channels like IGN could have a negative impact on the game's success if there are too many of them...
