Halo
Did you reach max level in Destiny Year One? Have you been playing Destiny since the beginning? Is your name Wesleyshark? If any of the previous are true, CONGRATULATIONS! You are now entitled to be black. Thanks for playing!
But to get back on topic...
I woke up pretty early today and decided to play some Hearthstone, enough to get Rank 20 so I get the free card back:
Got to about Rank 19 from bonus stars, took a look at the clock, and bam, it's the afternoon.
Happy that these days aren't taking forever, I'm aching to play Gears Ultimate.
Halo.
Moving crucial story elements to a medium that must be accessed outside of the game is a failure in story telling. I'm so tired of this 'do stuff in game to unlock content that must be viewed on the web' mentality. Every game with deep lore should copy Mass Effects codex. It's an incredible system built into the game for those who wish to seek deeper story elements.

Please log in to halowaypoint.com with your Microsoft account to see a screencap and enable viewing of the terminal video on the Halo channel app. To view the video after unlocking, quit the game to the main menu, go to extras, and launch the app through the game.
It's so simple and rewarding!
Desinty had unskippable cutscenes, and people bitched about that endlessly- the Taken King will allow you to skip them now haha.
People are going to complain either way. It's the norm.

Maybe because the game is designed around replaying content, making multiple characters, and, oh, what's my last point...
Destiny's cutscenes suck!
"You been dead for long time. I'm Peter Dinklage. You probably have a lot of questions. Don't worry, I won't answer any of them. Follow me!"
"I don't even have time to explain why I don't have time to explain."
That second quote is so sad because you can imagine the guy at Bungie making the cutscene going, "God damnit, Destiny is out in September and we have like 4 cutscenes... I guess this line is a crafty way of not having to create any more story threads that won't be resolved by the end."
I'm excited for TTK but Halo's cutscenes are miles better than Destiny's in every way except for camera work, where they are pretty much equal.
By Wahrer Go To Post*plays the game the way 90% of players play it*I'm not mocking you; the info is mostly there. Very little info is unexplained in the game. Them being why the Covenant back and why the Chief's armor looks different. And I'm even ignoring the terminals.
*hasn't read the books*
*hasn't built a time machine to read Silentium prior to Halo 4's release*
*is confused about the story*
*wonders why we're fighting Covenant, all the Spartans look different, etc.*

I mean, I'm a fervent lore whore and I was still lost at roughly the start of Reclaimer. I mean yeah, I gleaned the basics from the Librarian moment, but even then majority of it (like Chief becoming a Jedi) was totally out of left field. By the time I "squared off" against the Didact (or tried to, anyway) in the final cutscene I had totally lost track of the plot. Come the Didact monologue I was just like "WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON ANYMORE"
Explained is different from explained well. Good exposition is tricky, and there's a ton and a half of stuff to get across. As much as I enjoyed Halo 4's story, I gotta admit they didn't do a very good job of laying things out. Got by on having read the Forerunner stuff, plus spending waaaaay too much time on TVTropes let me patch the rest together.

Eh...
By Poodlestrike Go To PostUnderstand? Yes. Appreciate? This is a pretty fair point.
Eh…
For example it's pretty easy to have a basic understanding of the Didact. He's this big bad forerunner dude who's pissed off at humans, that's obvious.
What isn't easy is understanding and appreciating why he's actually a fairly interesting antagonist. Without reading the forerunner trilogy he's a pretty one dimensional character (although still fairly badass) who seems to hate humans for almost no reason. Reading the books makes him far more interesting.
By Poodlestrike Go To PostUnderstand? Yes. Appreciate?Appreciate is so much more subjective than understand.

Exactly.

The Taken King will bring some new PVP gametypes. They look fun as heck.
The "neurtal bomb" that is referenced is called Rift. You have to grab the object and "dunk" it in the enemy team's base.

By Lord of Admirals Go To PostAppreciate is so much more subjective than understand.Yeah, but there's still a certain informational standard that you can tell is being missed; it's one thing to be able to tell that the Didact is a big forerunner baddie, but it's another to understand and appreciate his motivations and backstory, even if you don't enjoy the end result. They pretty clearly missed the mark there.

I thought the termimals did a great job setting things up.
Sweet, I was shocked when Destiny launched without objective modes. I might start playing PvP with Rift.
By FollowTheWind Go To PostIs Destiny PvP even competitive? Like balanced game modes and such? No, it's not intended to be though.
By FollowTheWind Go To PostIs Destiny PvP even competitive? Like balanced game modes and such?
It's not competitive in the sense that CS or Halo is, no. It's not balanced in a traditional sense haha. It's a damn riot to play though.

Apparently I'm at -30 points on Reddit for my comment on blowing grenades/Rockets up mid-air being poor game design for Halo. What are your thoughts, are you glad they removed it from Halo 5 or do you enjoy having your grenades explode as soon as you release it?
Been playing SWAT with CrimsonX. Getting instant matches with no lag. Feels super smooth.. which is great to come back to. I haven't played in weeks.

It doesn't happen to me often enough to care, and I've played a lot of Halo. Maybe I'm just lucky.
To be clear you're talking about rocket launcher rockets blowing up grenades in mid air, right? Or what? I'm not sure I understand. My grenades don't just explode immediately for no reason, something has to happen for it to occur.
I suppose it's good that they removed it because for competitive play it would suck for matches to be lost due to it happening, but if it stayed in the game I probably wouldn't have cared or even noticed it much.

I'm glad that it's been removed.

So you could throw a grenade as someone is shooting at you, and their bullets might randomly hit that 'nade and your own grenade kills you, giving them the kill for it. Mind you, if you're around teammates, it hurts them too.

Same thing with Rockets, how a grenade explosion can blow a Rocket off course and Rockets exploding by gunfire.

I liked the feature personally, but they definitely should have toned it down a bit. Maybe made the hitbox super small or something.

I like how grenades can knock rockets off course, THAT was genuinely funny and it was truly a rare occurrence. Plus it's not like the rocket launcher has any meaningful counterplay to it anyway, just point it at the ground near someone and it's almost a guaranteed kill.
My friend bought the halo megablock set or whatever, are req cards just gonna come with everything (inb4 req code with mt.dew and Doritos)

A power weapon that you have to earn and gives the user.. power lol
2. Gravity Hammer can/should deflect Rockets
3. Thrusters
It's not supposed to be easy to escape a Rocket, nor should it be difficult to use one effectively. So maybe I'm missing your point about "meaningful counterplay" because a grenade or gunfire randomly exploding a Rocket is not meaningful counterplay; it's just random.
The only randomness I like in Halo multiplayer is a piece of a Banshee flying across the map to splatter me etc., not my bullets and Rockets not going where I shoot them, which is evidently what Halo 3 is all about.
It's like funknown has tourette's syndrome but with bashing Halo 3 instead of random noises.
just can't help himself
just can't help himself
Halo 3 deserves the poo I fling at it. When you shoot a Rocket in any game other than Halo 3, it goes where it's supposed to unless someone uses a Gravity Hammer or Armor Lock.

Halo 3 was about a lot of things, and none of those things were FUN.
All power weapons in Halo have their weaknesses. Rocket Launcher can't be used at pointblank range without causing suicide, the Energy Sword's range is limited, the Sniper Rifle is less effective at close range... and also rockets can be deflected by a well-timed Hammer swing or, in cases of random luck or extremely skillful prediction, a grenade explosion.
I don't mind it. It's hardly game-breaking.

By Wesleyshark Go To PostF'real though- Halo 4 feels so damn good in 60fps.
I can't enjoy Halo 4, feels like it's an incomplete Halo 5. Some of Halo 5's gameplay differences are there but I always try to clamber and when it doesn't happen, it feels bad.

What are your thoughts, are you glad they removed it from Halo 5 or do you enjoy having your grenades explode as soon as you release it?I'm indifferent on the matter. While I am dissapointed it's removed, shooting the grenades out of the air was impossible to do intentionally (unless set up in custom games), and was more an element of luck. AKA randomness.
By removing that ability, they've removed further randomness, making the game more competitive.

Oh, nice catch, there! I love that dang gun haha. So satisfying.
But this all reminds me of how the Flood won't be in Halo 5 :(

Now the threat is literally the Forerunners clawing their way back to life to defend their legacy. Plus, the longer we go on, the more ominous the Gravemind's final line from Halo 3 becomes.
"Like water I ebb and flow. Defeat is simply an addition of time to a sentence I never deserved. But you imposed."

Well said.
I think the Gravemind/Timeless One had some of the best lines in all of Halo Lore.
"We are the Flood. There is no difference. Until all space and time are rolled up and life is crushed in the folds … no end to war, grief, or pain. In a hundred and one thousand centuries … unity again, and wisdom. Until then -sweetness."
"There is only one truth. That which is done will be done again. For we cannot cease from creating, but the end of all our creation will be to look into a reflection and see ourselves for the first time. The pain we have brought on ourselves. The pain you caused us. For we are the same. All remember the defiance and destruction."
"Listen to the silence. Ten million years of deep silence. And now, whimpers and cries; not of birth. That is what we bring: a great crushing weight to press down youth and hope."

What are your thoughts, are you glad they removed it from Halo 5 or do you enjoy having your grenades explode as soon as you release it?It's good that they removed it, IMO. It's one of those things that works super well on paper ("If you're good enough, you can knock your opponent's greandes/rockets out of the air!"), but in practice it's just a mess. Nobody's actually good enough to consistently do it deliberately, so the outcome is largely random.
