So much purple.
Just got round to watching some of the invitational footage. Looks awesome.
I'm loving the weapon variety on show, very refreshing after the BR fest of H2A. The strafe speed looked really good as well.

Am I seriously the only one in this thread excited for Gears Ultimate Edition? I find that hard to believe.
I never played the original and I hear the campaign is pretty good, plus the multiplayer has 19 maps at launch and it all runs at solid 60fps. I love Gears multiplayer so I can't wait to play it. Only 16 days, too!

Where precisions don't have that margin for error. And they (automatics) need to be nerfed.

I think they might need to remove the SMG from Arena since we already spawn with AR's. If they want other automatics being used then go with the Storm Rifle and Suppressor, but not the mini SAW lol. The focus should be on precision weapons because they allow for more interesting shootouts, and power weapon/Power-up control.
I can't decide whether to go digital or physical on Gears. I've got plenty of space (it's a 45 GB game) but I dunno. I don't have a single physical game for my XB1 yet (my only game for it is digital MCC).

The Pistol should be able to outshoot the AR. Even in CE, the AR was useful for stripping shields but not against the precision weapon. No matter the range. (And with Halo 5 I see AR/SMG spray +sprint melee being a casual fan favorite)
Thats how it should be. (I've been playing a lot more CE lately. )

AR has 36 bullets, think it takes 32 to get a kill; can't really spray and pray that.
With that said, I think precision weapons are more interesting to watch in a tournament setting. I think they've said the SMG is a "tier 2" weapon, so its not quite a power weapon, but not quite a standard rifle. It definitely seems very strong, I wouldn't be surprised if it got knocked down a bit before release.

Same logic is applied to the beam weapons in Halo.
The 4 round bump-up in magazine size was actually done to make the AR a more viable weapon.
If tournament holders want to have BR starts, it's as simple as one change in the custom game settings.
I like AR starts in regular matchmaking, it's classic Halo to me. Had AR starts in Halo 1, 3, and Reach, the games I played the most. The BR and DMR are very powerful ranged weapons and I think in normal matchmaking it's totally fine to treat them that way. In competitive settings it's up to whoever is hosting the event to determine the starting weapons. I agree that it is more interesting to watch pros duel with BRs than ARs.

Honestly, and its not an insult; but people arguing for AR starts are a more casual crowd who don't care about precision or consistant defense off spawn, which a BR or Prexlcision weapon offer with less of a margin for error.

Of course tournament organizers can change the settings to their liking, but the OFFICIAL HCS settings will use whatever 343 wants them to use. The LANs that actually matter and the World Champs will be pistol/AR unless 343 change it before that.
The HCS invitational showed that the pistol was plenty viable to have as a precision starting weapon, I'm ok with this. I just want multiple weapons on the map that are worth picking up. It looks like this will be the case in H5, and I like that.
By Ragnarok Flames Go To PostHonestly, and its not an insult; but people arguing for AR starts are a more casual crowd who don't care about precision or consistant defense off spawn, which a BR or Prexlcision weapon offer with less of a margin for error. The thing is, AR/Magnum starts in H5 seem to fulfill the latter category handily; the pistol is proving itself to be a perfectly competent precision weapon, entirely capable of defense off spawn.
I just disagree fundamentally in your assessment of automatic weapon's role in the sandbox. At mid> range, they should be every ounce as capable as precision weapons. Thrusters allow for interesting close-range gunfights regardless of weapon selection, so I don't see any particular need to turn automatics into their traditional crapfest selves.
I was personally a big fan of AR starts in the beta (unlike most of the past games), but I'll probably be spending most of my time in Warzone/campaign so I don't really care much if 343i decides to go with BR starts. Though I would love to have the option for AR starts either way, just in case I'm feeling like some Arena.

They built an entire mode for your play experience and Competitive still suffers from inaccurate starts to entice the Warzone community. And when they leave the arena community has to deal with the issues.

I was just saying that the decision doesn't really effect me too much, so I'm fine if they end up going with BR starts.

I think that's a faulty premise.
Granted, it could end up being the case again, just like it has the last 5 games, but it isn't guaranteed. There is no law of the universe dictating that Halo cannot operate on a competitive level without BR starts.
In the beta, I felt that AR starts really didn't work in matches I played. Playing at semi-pro, the team that dominated the BR's and DMR's on the map had too big of an advantage, which was dissimilar to say power weapon control. The pistol has changed, but during the beta, certainly wasn't a viable option against a skilled player.
Maps like truth and empire have some pretty long sight lines and the BR and DMR were able to dominate pistol users off spawn. It didn't really matter that the AR was good at close to medium range, because you'd hardly ever get there anyway.
If the pistol offers a viable chance for players who just spawned, that great, but if not, I seriously doubt AR/Pistol starts will work out in higher skilled games.

What am I if I will play Halo 5 for a long time, but I don't care whether it's AR starts or BR starts? I enjoy both and both have their merits.
I have no doubt Halo 5 will get a ton of playtime out of me for months on end, regardless of how the game performs in terms of player retention. I will play the campaign (obviously), and plan on enjoying both Arena and Warzone modes. I love regular 4v4 Halo as much as BTB/Warzone-style Halo. I don't fall under a single category. But am I not hardcore because I am not a diehard defender of BR starts? I guess I just don't understand.

Automatic weapons in Halo are boring to use and unsuitable for competitive play IMO. Competitive play should revolve around precision weapons because they require more skill.
I also see no problems with the BR being the only used utility weapon (like it is in H2A). Game is a lot less random if you can predict what weapon your opponent is using but I also see why some see it being boring.

From what I've seen of the recent footage (who knows what's going to change) people were passing up the br/dmr in favor of keeping the pistol in many instances.
I am also extremely excited for Gears UE. Gears of war is my all time favorite third person shooter for MP & the lore is interesting to me. I havent played a gears game since the amazing overrun mode me and my friends played constantly in judgement. Playing as locust and being able to fight human controlled cogs to take their bases halo reach invasion style was AMAZING. i pray that overrun comes back in gears 4 along with horde mode.
Horde is great for pve style tower defense, but overrun let you actually be under the skin of locust infantry & locust bosses. It was something i wanted since the first horde mode came out. Beast mode in Gears 3 wasnt acceptable since it was literally reverse horde, it was timed, and you could only go up against cog A.I.
I hope epic has the time to fit both horde & overrun into gears 4. it would just extend the insane replayability of gears even further along with the multiplayer.
Halo 5, Gow UE & Star Wars Battlefront are going to eat up my free time for a long time. Halo 5 being the most time consuming I predict!

That's true and pretty encouraging, especially after the gamescom tournament. But still, there is the possibility that later on in the game, people will start using different strategies that will once again turn the BR and DMR in the dominant utility weapons.
We can't change anything about it right now, so we'll have to see how it works out.

For now, I don't think they'll listen much at this point. They've tested it and made their decision. It's for us to show 343 after launch whether their decision was the right one or the wrong one.
