By Kidjr Go To PostRandom fact I had a textcee battle with j Cole when he used to post back in early 00s.
And I think due to lack of quality lyricists available people get hung up on kendricks ability. Dude is nice but really isn't anything special from a purely lyrical stand point, he's a very well rounded emcee tho.
Also I have to agree wth 3sided on the Beyoncé album now have time to digest it. It's incredible.
Yup on all accounts. People act like Kendrick is qwel or gift of gab or Aesop Rock or Eminem or something. Kendrick is amazing, but he's a clear notch or two below the all time great lyricists.
J Cole's style is simpler, but he doesn't drop whack lyrics. There's nothing corny about his shit. It's like top level jay z or top level pac shit. Basically taking simplified rhyme schemes and getting the most out of them. Well, almost the most. Common will forever be the God MC of simplified rhyme schemes - he's completely unfuckwitable by everyone combined.
By Trey Go To PostKendrick a tier below Aesop Rock in lyricism.
J Cole doesn't have corny lines.
I need an adult.
Everyone has occasional corny lines. J Cole doesn't drop corny shit on the regular, it's at least 95% dope. Which is much much harder to do when you don't have rhyme schemes to fall back to.
And Kendrick is a tier below Aesop Rock. Aesop's shit is iconic even if his style is harder to get to.
Edit - you do know that Aesop Rock and A$AP Rocky are different people right?
It's funny to me you say that. I was just looking at this a few minutes before this current exchange.
He has more than a few corny lines. And I like J. Cole.

He's got like 5 full albums of material. Much of that is just bad wordplay on the word shit, some of it ain't that bad. "You the shit only cuz I digested you ..." In particular isn't corny because it works for two reasons and not just one, like most puns.
Someone should legit tell him to stop writing the word shit or fart in his rhymes and there you go.
I mean, Kendrick is the best lyricist of any of the new crop of Mc's to blow up in years. But like, is he even better than Black Thought? Who was considered to be the weakest lyricist out of that early 2000's Rawkus Revolution? I don't think so personally.
Views is actually growing on me a bit, it's just about met my "7.5/10 Not great but pretty good" expectations.
That's impossible because TML is a terrible album.
By 3SidedPolygons Go To PostThank me later is easily his best overall album since he got famous. Like, easily. It's not close.

It's Drake. His ceiling is "mediocre album" to begin with. Thank me Later is short and doesn't have much unnecessary garbage, which for him, is an achievement. But I'll hold the minority view on this, I get that.
Like, I don't think I've heard anyone say thank me later is good and it's universally looked on as his worst project.
Totally contrarian.

On meta critic take care and IYRTITL has a 78 and thank me later has a 75. TML has 23 positive reviews and 3 mixed reviews with no negatives.
It's hardly universally acknowledged as trash, relative to the drake scale of 70-80.
Eh whatever, I'm not falling on my sword for drake of all people.

I definitely don't remember people calling TML trash when it came out. lol. I think the argument at the time was that So Far Gone was more cohesive than it was. It got a ton of praise.
Now, when compared to all of his other works...sure. It's definitely not his best outing and at the bottom of the list.

Only Drake albums I've listened to a lot are Take Care and If You're Reading This It's Too Late, and I like both a lot.
Haven't heard great things about his other stuff.

Damn I never thought about it but It's is really good argument about whether Kendrick is better than Blackthought or is it just Kendrick has just had better production and support.
I want them to do a track together

Aasking whether Kendrick is better than The Roots - no. But it's obvious he has the machine behind him in a way that they never did.
So Views kinda sucks huh? https://twitter.com/chrispalmernba/status/726803450856534016

Lyrically Kendrick isnt special but #BARZ are dead so he doesnt need to be special. Black Thought would wash him on a track together. But Kendrick better at making a total package (song/album) than Thought.

Okay faggot
Don't be so sensitive
If you want to get fucked in the ass

Just a little joke to show how homophobic you are"

Eh you can do that with anyone who has this much music published. Jay z and Pac have their fair share of whack stuff too, it's not the norm.
By 3SidedPolygons Go To PostEh you can do that with anyone who has this much music published. Jay z and Pac have their fair share of whack stuff too, it's not the norm.Anyone who thought dropping those lyrics was a good idea at any point has already lost my ears.
Just no.

This shit is more in line with his everyday skill level.
I meant as a general rule. Not in terms of, there's nothing whack ever. I even compared him to HOV and Pac, those guys have plenty of whack lyrics too.
Hip Hop has a long long long track record of anti-gay rhymes. You're literally going to have to stop listening to anyone almost ever if that's your guideline. It's shitty, but it's a horrible part of the history of the culture.

Lol ok. Let me clarify. He drops some whack lyrics, like pretty much all mc's. As a general rule, he doesn't drop whack lyrics, his shit is on par with Pac and Hov's stuff.
Better?

Besides being awful lyrically and thematically, it came out in 2013.

"There will soon come a day when people in general, and rap artists specifically, are going to have to answer for their past usage of the word ‘faggot,’ much like the Grandfathers who are ashamed that they used the word ‘nigger’ as kids. At a time when public acceptance of gay rights is soaring (rightfully), hip-hop culture and general are still battling with homophobia (not excluding myself). Rather than run from it I chose to attack it playfully. Those lyrics are meant to make everyone uncomfortable for the sake of this very conversation.”

I mean, I already explained my position more clearly before you even posted here so...
Legit if you guys are listening to Drake and A$AP Fergy and NOT listening to J. Cole, you're missing out. For real.
Nope. J Cole has yet to make an album that doesn't make me fall asleep. He's in the same category as logic to me.
I have absolutely no interest in J. Cole. Surely something by him would have made its way to my ears if he was *that* essential.
95%... look, I like J. Cole, but it's closer to 75% okay lyrics, 20% fire, 5% suspect.
Hell, just check this post out to see how sus J. Cole can be sometimes: http://www.kanyetothe.com/forum/index.php?topic=1899361.0

"She put up with this shit like she work at the zoo, true"
Cole is dope, but he's more like The Notorious B.I.G. As in, he's dope lyrically, but has a tendency to say some whack, suspect rhymes.

That's already been discussed. Also, you know he's dropped like 5 albums right? You're talking about 20 bars in 5 albums. Even if 100 bars are trash in 5 albums - that comes out to about 2 songs worth, you're still talking about 95% dope.
And comparing him to BIG is no different than comparing him to Pac and Hov. In fact, if anything, it's even a step above Pac and Hov. So how are you disagreeing with me here.

The entire A$AP crew is trash and can't hold a candle to Cole.

I hope he doesn't. Wouldn't make sense to, especially since the hints of infidelity can be found in damn near all of her albums. It's only this explicit in Lemonade. All for hearing his side of the story, but that narrative is not what makes Lemonade such a good album, to begin with. It's only a part of it.
Edit: On second thought. Life Is Good is fire, so I hope he is working on his version of it. lmao.
