About to buy my first motorcycle - halp/suggestions/advice/prayers/etc

It's been many years since I rode or shopped for a bike, but I always thought the gs500 was a great beginner's bike. I had an older gs550 that was a very fun ride, cheap, and easy to work on.

Some general pointers,

1. look for something that is used, cheap, and not too beautiful. you'll probably go down a couple times, so don't expect your shiny plastics to stay scuff free for long.
2. gear is just as important as the bike. wear full gear when you can, but that isn't always practical. personally, I wouldn't get on a bike without a helmet, gloves, boots, and a jacket.
3. take a safety course. it's a great investment, a place to meet some friends, and it might get you some discounts on licensing and insurance.

Ride safe.

Yeah, the safety course has actually been the biggest hold up for me. I didn't want to pay 200 out of pocket and then buy gear on top of that right away before. Also, it SHOULD drop my insurance too.

How long did it take you to get comfortable riding?

Do it. Especially in Hawaii. Roads seem built for bikes. Still have to worry about other drivers not being insane though. Just take the safety course and gear up. I was heavily looking into doing this for a long time here, but there's too many trucks on the road for me to feel comfortable. Definitely buy used though for your first bike if you go through with it.

Probably a good idea. When I was looking into it tons of people recommended the Ninja 250r (now the 300)as a good beginner bike. http://www.kawasaki.com/Products/2015-Ninja-300-ABS. The 300 is about 5.3k according to Kawasaki's site which is pretty good for a new bike.

Of course there's always the thought of "is 250/300cc enough power" which I can't answer with complete confidence since I haven't tried it. But based on my experience on the highways of Hawaii (45mph limit right?)....that seems...like it'd be enough in that environment.

Back in the mainland in somewhere like Texas tho...prob not.

I wouldn't even dream of attempting to hit a Texas highway on a bike as a complete beginner man. That shit is scary enough in a truck.

Okay, going back to considering the bike because I may end up back in the US if this job happens. If that's the case, I can ship a bike a hell of a lot easier than I could ship a car. I'll be looking at a Ninja 300 as a beginner bike.
