Police were responding to a call of a "mass shooting" at a church in South Carolina Wednesday evening, according to numerous media reports. The Associated Press indicated that the incident occurred at Emanuel AME (African Methodist Episcopal) Church in Charleston around 9 p.m.
The suspected shooter is still at large, according to the Charleston Police Department's Twitter. Police described the suspect as a white male, approximately 21 years old, with a slender build. They also indicated he is believed to be wearing a gray sweatshirt, blue jeans and Timberland boots
Update:
Story @ TIME.com
Authorities on Thursday said they had arrested the suspect in the Charleston, S.C. shooting inside a historically black church that killed nine people and is being investigated as a hate crime.
Police identified the suspect as Dylann Roof, 21, of Lexington, S.C., and said they had captured him after a massive manhunt from Wednesday night into Thursday morning, the FBI and local authorities confirmed. He was found during a traffic stop in Shelby, N.C., where he was “cooperative” with officers, officials said.
Apparently they just confirmed that there were multiple fatalities
The Post and Courier newspaper is reporting that the pastor of the church, Clementa Pinckney, who is also a state Senator, was inside for a service at the time of the shooting. Mayor Joe Riley has confirmed to the Post and Courier that there are fatalities in a shooting that occurred at the site of a church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. It was unclear if Rev. Pinckney was a victim.
Police shootings and now mass murder hate crimes.
This should do well to break the illusion that we're a post racial society.

Michael, Rena, Nalin and I are praying for the victims and families touched by tonight’s senseless tragedy at Emanuel AME Church.
While we do not yet know all of the details, we do know that we’ll never understand what motivates anyone to enter one of our places of worship and take the life of another.
Please join us in lifting up the victims and their families with our love and prayers.

Doubt it. Crazy if a state legislator is dead in this too. Literally an assassination that'd force a hell of a lot of people to get out of their chairs.
The governor's statement...pssh.

Man this the type of shit whether right or wrong just puts me in a foul mood towards white people during my day. I'm reading that he actually sat in the church for a hour before shooting people? Rage inducing. RIP to those involved. The fact that this goon hasn't been caught really makes me nervous and anxious too.

According to survivor reports, he sat in on their bible study for a good amount of time before saying "You rape our women and are taking over our country & you have to go." and beginning the attack.

So yeah anyone with eyes can pretty clearly see it was a planned assassination of the Senator by a White Supremacist domestic terrorist group. Even as far removed from the situation as we are.
Anyone saying otherwise sort of transcends past willful ignorance towards actively trying to bury the issue at this point.
The fact that this goon hasn't been caught really makes me nervous and anxious too.
It honestly seems like more effort is being made to contain "black rage" at the situation than to actually find those responsible. Or hell, than to even acknowledge them really.
Like how bad does shit have to get before we even acknowledge that these groups exist in america and that they're really fucking dangerous?

Media sure as fuck didn't hold back when that suicidal German bastard crashed the airplane a few months ago or when the shooting in Sweden happened. They only twist the narrative when it's an American white boy that does this kind of shit.
NYTimes Article from Tuesday "The Growing Right-Wing Terror Threat"
In a survey we conducted with the Police Executive Research Forum last year of 382 law enforcement agencies, 74 percent reported anti-government extremism as one of the top three terrorist threats in their jurisdiction; 39 percent listed extremism connected with Al Qaeda or like-minded terrorist organizations. And only 3 percent identified the threat from Muslim extremists as severe, compared with 7 percent for anti-government and other forms of extremism.
An officer from a large metropolitan area said that “militias, neo-Nazis and sovereign citizens” are the biggest threat we face in regard to extremism. One officer explained that he ranked the right-wing threat higher because “it is an emerging threat that we don’t have as good of a grip on, even with our intelligence unit, as we do with the Al Shabab/Al Qaeda issue, which we have been dealing with for some time.” An officer on the West Coast explained that the “sovereign citizen” anti-government threat has “really taken off,” whereas terrorism by American Muslim is something “we just haven’t experienced yet.”
Despite public anxiety about extremists inspired by Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, the number of violent plots by such individuals has remained very low. Since 9/11, an average of nine American Muslims per year have been involved in an average of six terrorism-related plots against targets in the United States. Most were disrupted, but the 20 plots that were carried out accounted for 50 fatalities over the past 13 and a half years.
In contrast, right-wing extremists averaged 337 attacks per year in the decade after 9/11, causing a total of 254 fatalities, according to a study by Arie Perliger, a professor at the United States Military Academy’s Combating Terrorism Center. The toll has increased since the study was released in 2012.
Public debates on terrorism focus intensely on Muslims. But this focus does not square with the low number of plots in the United States by Muslims, and it does a disservice to a minority group that suffers from increasingly hostile public opinion. As state and local police agencies remind us, right-wing, anti-government extremism is the leading source of ideological violence in America.

I get your sentiment with the media though, it's just unbearable witnessing US media as an outsider...
I mean this isn't a unique event, this is becoming pretty common lately and the media still tries to spin it...
It's just crazy to me the extent to which people can justify the cruelty of others just to protect their world view

I'm already thoroughly annoyed at the balking of calling it a hate crime. So busy trying to deal with external terrorism, we completely forget we've had plenty of domestic terrorism in just our lifetime if you're a millennial. Black churches used to be bombed and burnt consistently in the early to mid 1900s. This is just someone bringing back racial terrorism tactics into the modern age because we haven't fucking dealt with our shit.
I won't be able to focus at all at work today. So tired of being worried about family due to shit like this still going on...

White House:
We have no doubt the coward who committed this heinous act will be brought to justice. But as a nation we must confront the ravages of gun violence and the stain of hatred that continues to be visited on our streets, in our schools, in our houses of worship, and in our communities.
U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch addressed the shooting this morning: "This is a crime that has reached into the heart of that community. The Department of justice has opened a hate crime investigation into this shooting incident."https://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2015/06/18/latest-president-obama-delivers-statement-shooting-south-carolina
The NYT piece this morning highlighted that the church where this happened has an interesting and tragic history in and of itself already. Clearly this guy targeted this specific church because it was a known hub for local leadership. You don't just sit next to a Senator during a group discussion, and talk for an hour, before murdering him and eight others in cold blood. Insanity plea is out the fucking window.
I've been waiting for the white, Christian supremacist world view of Fox News to come out and do something so beyond the pale and disgusting that decent conservatives get outraged.
Today's reporting of this SC incident may be the point.

Black people with berets show up at voting booths? Voter intimidation by a terrorist group.
In the sparse details that have emerged about his life, none would suggest that he was capable of such hatred and violence.
Roof was arrested that day in late April on a charge of trespassing; his car was turned over to his mother. The disposition of that case is also unclear.

Fucking guns. I refuse to believe that Americans are more homicidal that the rest of the world. They just have easier access to a killing "toy".

I know, this is not the case but it's certainly related somehow. Gun culture just makes a toxic environment all around.
