He was one of a string of players who get acquired very young to the academy because they show promise at their level, and that always brings attention. But actual hype coming out of the academy is rare.
I would say one young player who was hyped like you are probably imagining was Angel Gomes. He was magical at the academy level, but there were serious questions about his size, and those questions were right.
Another probably was the rapist, but we don't talk about him anymore.
Mainoo so far living up to it imo.
I think the main thing about Hannibal was that they paid 10m for him when he was 16 and at a time when that was pretty darn rare (I guess it still is for a kid that young tbh). So there were massive expectations at least internally and then a little externally for people who followed the market.
Funny thing is that while Angel Gomes is by no means a world beater, these days he's a very canny deep pivot midfielder playing at Lille (and not the AM people exepcted him to be). One for you to consider there Carsley.
