United, next to Barcelona were probably one of the best and most dominant teams in Europe during that time and their players weren't getting picked as much as they should, and the ones that were, were always blamed when England inevitably failed. Spain started the entire Barcelona midfield and look what they accomplished. Team cohesion is really important.
England were chronically mismanaged. Southgate is a lot better than that, thankfully.
Thought Carrick went into his shell whenever he played for England, and Scholes was long retired from international football at that stage. Don't remember if there was ever a prospect of him coming back.
Think that was the period when Hargreaves was in England's first XI as well, but he soon started getting the injuries that would keep him out for months at a time.
CM was definitely a neglected bombsite though between 2002 and 2014. Mental how many managers kept on shoving Gerrard and Lampard into it with no regard for how it would actually work.
